    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: MikeSchAAA Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.vermont.counties.rutland/4802.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Joyce, Thanks for your kind words. The amazing part is that there are records like this for every town in VT and Rutland Co (except as I understand Poultney which had a fire). And the funny part is I didn't even know they existed till I stumbled across them. Can you imagine a project to digitize all the grand lists and town reports in all the towns in the county? Be daunting but a remarkable contribution to the stock of primary data available on the Web. Maybe somebody will get a grant or something and do it. The other funny part is that in Washington Co right across the border none of this stuff is public -- security and identity-theft concerns, as I was told. Seems silly for the 19th century but there you have it. Vermont seems like a paragon of open government compared to NY. And Patty was right that the town clerk and staff were great. Enough rambling, mainly I wanted to say thanks for your words and hope you find what you're looking for. Peace, Mike Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Mike: Oh you don't know how hard I have tried to get records out of Castleton, but when you no longer live in Vermont it is near to impossible without being there to do your own research. I have written to the Historical Society and they have told me that the records aren't available until after 1850ish because there had been a flood. I do what I can every couple of years when I go back, but from visit to visit the information trail gets cold. Maybe some day after I retire I can go back, throw away the world, except me and my curiosity and sit and go thru the dusty records. Out of curiosity did you find the records in Castleton, or were they in Middlesex. I also am guessing from I have found on line, there are many Castleton records in Fair Haven, and I would bet some could be found in White Hall. I also need to commend the girls who put a tremendous amount of info on the Vermont site, they do a great job. Without them the Vermont records would be much harder to find on line. Gosh Mike, you could be another Abby Hemmingway and digitize the records for the entire state (ha ha) Anyhow, you have a great site, I wish my family name began with a "D" Thanks again for putting the records on line.
