I have my grandfather's First Communion certificate: James Dyer Dawson, 1 June 1873 (My note: DOB 1861, Castleton Township), Church of St. Lucien (or Lucian), Castleton. Priest's name appears to be I.H. Boissonnaule. The certificate is written in French. >From what I can find, St. John Baptiste and St. Louis de France (Castleton and Fairhaven) had been founded by 1873. Was there perhaps still some sort of mission church in Castleton, at that late date? I understand for many years there were circuit riding priests who came to a particular place 3 or 4 times a year. Was this still the case in 1873? I plan on checking with the Burlington Diocesan archives. I've looked on the VT French-Canadian Gen Soc site. Also, two great aunts, who died as infants, have been located, thanks to the work of a research friend in MA. They were born and died in the 1860s, and not the 1850s as is carved on the family monument in the Castleton Cemetery. If anyone knows of some Fairhaven or Castleton area newspapers which might have carried notice of their deaths, I'd be thrilled to hear from you! I'm also hoping word on the mission church might lead me to where I'll find info. on the girls' births. We have searched for these little girls for years, and it's a thrill to found something about them! Sarah Dawson DOD 15 Jan 1865, Castleton, diphtheria, age 1 yr 10 months.
