Hi Cathy and All, Im sure you've noticed, in the old Rutland Heralds the constant listings in the 1890s of men from West Rutland and the marble industry, "obtaining positions" all over the northeast and the nation. This was a huge migration. What you had were the children of these very large families growing up and there not being enough work for many of them so off they went elsewhere, usually for good. Even if work was available many were fed up with the low wages and lack of opportunity. I saw where western miners were getting three dollars a day at a time when West Rutland quarrymen were getting around one. Issues of the Rutland Herald around Christmas and New Years are a good place to catch up with these folks as they would come home for holiday visits to the old folks. I assume this out migration of what would have been the next generation of marble workers contributed to the influx of polish immigrants into the area to take their place. Peter Patten
