"Don't spend this," he said, "and you will always have a dollar in your pocket." My grandfather passed the coin in its little leather case on to my mother and she passed it on to me. This sounds to me like it might be a more widespread "tradition" of some kind. Has anyone heard a similar family story? Is it related to the Irish? To a section of the US? To a particular historical period of hard times? Just wondered if anyone was aware of this being "traditional" in some way.
