Source, Rutland Daily Herald--Fri. May. 22, 1891. RUTLAND, Vt. FIRE ON GROVE STREET. There was a slight fire and considerable excitement in George Wardwell's house on Grove street yesterday morning at 7:30 o'clock, and but for the presence of mind of some of those on the scene the fire department would have been called out. L. V. Green was going down town, when his attention was attracted to Mr. Wardwell's house by a cry of fire. He went into the house, while N.S. Marshall hastened to the nearest box to give the alarm. A curtain caught fire from a gas jet in the room occupied by Miss Eva Hendee. On glancing at the situation Mr. Green saw it was unnecessary to call out the department and a messenger sent after Mr. Marshall arrived just in time. The burning curtain was pulled from its fastenings and the flames extinguished before any damage had been done. In the meantime Mr. Wardwell appeared on the scene with a garden hose.
