Source, The Poultney Journal--Fri. Feb. 3, 1928. EDWARD J. BROWN DIES AT 88 IN CHICAGO. Edward J. Brown, for many years a resident of here and in Granville (N.Y.), died at the home of his son,, in Chicago, on January 17. He was born in North Granville eighty-eight years ago, and went west when a young man, where he and Miss Electa Weaver of Batavia, Ill., were married, and to them were born three sons, James G., who died some years ago, Edward, who died in infancy, and William. Deceased was one of the most congenial hotel proprietors this section ever knew, and conducted the Poultney House, Crescent Valley house at Pawlet, Inn at North Granville, and the hotel at Middle Granville at different times. In 1890-1 he managed Hotel Hygeia, also called "Oakdale" at Lake St. Catherine a splendid hostelry on the site which now belongs to A. G. Schmidt of Bronxville, N.Y., and which constitutes a very popular settlement during the summer season, with its Lake View House and several cottages. This hotel was very well patronized, and Landlord Brown's cordiality and attention, coupled with a first-class cuisine, was responsible for it. He was the last of a family of six children, Henry, Wallace, Anson, Edward and Clayton Brown, and Mrs. Luthira Brown Cree, all of whom were born in North Granville (N.Y.). Transcribed by, Joan H.
