    2. Source, The Poultney Journal--Fri. May 18, 1928. LOCAL BRIEFS : David J. Roberts, jr., caught a 2+1/2 lb. trout Thursday afternoon. The Woman's Foreign Missionary society met Friday with Mrs. H. A. Matot. Constance Lee won in the sixth grade spelling contest at T.C.A. for the year. Miss Betty Jones ranked fourth in the state spelling contest held in Rutland. The Ladies' Aid Society of the Welsh church held a ten-ten party Tuesday afternoon. The Woman's Relief Corps are planning to serve dinner to the firemen, Friday, June 15th. The East Poultney Baptist church will hold a food sale at the Citizens Bank, Saturday afternoon. Misses Helen and Frances Sheloski of Rutland have come to Poultney where they have employment. Mrs. Patrick Hogan has returned from the Rutland hospital where she underwent an operation three weeks ago. The Woodstock High school team defeated the T.C.A. team in the interscholastic debate held Monday night. The Eureka parent Teachers' Association will hold a meeting at the school hall Friday night at 7:30 o'clock. Mr.and Mrs. Henry Harris have purchased the brick house on Grove Street formerly owned by Mr.and Mrs. Ellis Rowland. The Ladies' Aid Society of the M.E. church will serve dinner to the public in the vestry Thursday, May 24th from eleven o'clock on. Misses Sadie Owens, Ethel Edminster, Janet Richardson, Betty Baker and Janet Schwartwood attended the Older Girl's conference in Rutland last week. The spelling contest winners Friday were: Grade 1, Alta Jean Ferguson ; grade 2, Raymond Ruby; grade 3, Elizabeth Spaulding; grade 5A, Arthur Williams. E. R. Donahue, H. D. Fenton, M. Lynch, E. O'Donnel, P. J. Carmody, William Minogue, John McMorrow, O.W.McShane and J. E. Sennet attended the Democratic convention in Burlington this week. Funeral services for Mrs. Frank Gould of Middle Granville, were held Monday from St. Raphael's church. Interment was in St. Raphael's cemetery. Mrs. Gould was formerly Miss Margaret Kickum of Hydeville and was a sister of Mrs. Andrew Elliott of this town. Mrs. G. H. Norton, Mrs. Harry M. Griffin, and Mrs. F. H. Graves attended a bridge luncheon Saturday at the home of Mrs. Levi Ayres in Granville, N.Y. at which Mrs. Gray Haskins of Granville and Mrs. Porter Johnson of West Pawlet were joint hostesses. Miss Ruth Roberts, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. owen Roberts, and John W. Owens, were married at the Trinity church by Rev. A. C. Wilson Wednesday afternoon. They were attended by Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Owens. After a wedding trip they will reside at the bride's home. The Poultney people who were in Granville to attend the funeral of Rev. J. W. Morris Thursday were; Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Morris and family; Mrs. W. G. Morris; Mrs. T. O. Jones, Mrs. Ella Garitty, Mrs. Seth Roberts, Mrs. Jonah Hughes, T. O. Williams, Emerys Ellis and Mrs. D. J. Roberts and children. "Guest Day" was observed at the regular meeting of the Rotary at the Academy parlors on Thursday. The speaker was Oliver D. Ward of Rutland, and his talk was most interesting. George Norton led in the singing, and Miss Cuoco of the Academy sang most pleasingly two numbers, accompanied by Miss deGrys. The elementary division of the piano classes of Mrs. Helen Kilburn and Miss Hazel Bresee gave a recital at the studio on Thursday. The follwing took part ; Lorraine Roberts, Esther Wallace, Gretchen Holmes, Veontha Ward, Alice Ida Noble, Irene Mahar, Anna Vogel, Thelma Palmer, Mary Shank .
