Source, Rutland Daily Herald--Jan. 20, 1928. RUTLAND, VT. GIVE SURPRISE PARTY TO H. F. BIXBY, 91. Civil War Soldier Receives Unexpected Visit From 7 Grand Army Comrades. Hascall F. Bixby, Civil War veteran, was given a surprise party yesterday afternoon at the home of his son, F. E. Bixby, 7 Sheldon Place, by seven Grand Army comrades on the occasion of his 91st birthday. The old soldiers spent the afternoon in playing cards and Mrs. F. E. Sheldon served supper. Mr. Bixby does not show his years. Apparently having the physique of a man scarcely more than 70, he is able to walk about the streets daily, unaided, and takes a keen interest in current events. Born in Shrewsbury, January 19, 1837, Mr. Bixby made that town his home until 1902 when he moved to Rutland. He was employed by the Rutland railroad for 30 years and for a decade was section foreman at Cuttingsville. He enlisted at Burlington September 6, 1861 in the Fifth Vermont cavalry and fought in the Peninsular campaign, and also at Antietam where he was wounded. He was mustered out January 28, 1863. The veterans who gave the surprise party yesterday were Col. D.L.Morgan, Charles Young, commander of Roberts post, G. A. R., Eben Bishop, Charles Bailey, James E. Post, George Brown, Charles H. Granger and James W. Greaves. ps. Hascall Bixby was my husband's great grandfather. Transcribed by, Joan H. Bixby
