Rutland County Herald Wednesday Evening, March 9, 1848 On Saturday the 26th ult., 2 Irish laborers were killed about 2 miles south of this village, on section # 2, Burlington and Rutland Railroad. They were shoveling beneath a bank some 14 or 15 feet high when about a square yard of frozen dirt suddenly caving off, fell upon them, killing them instantly. Their names were Thomas Hopkins and Patrick Morran, the former aged 45 and the latter 25. John Garvy, another laborer standing near had his leg broken, but received no further injury.
