    1. [VTRUT] re "Flarity Drowning" on Rutland LIST (Caution Rambling)
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: stonepegger Surnames: Flaherty Andrus Barber Virginia Johnson Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.vermont.counties.rutland/4776/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Patty, Thanks for posting all those great pieces. Perhaps this 1883 Flarity drowning victim is a kinsman of "Dynamite" Dan Flaherty a quarry foreman with Granville NY origins (not far from ST. Catherine) Dan had a quarry in West Castleton that still is called the "Flaherty Qarry". It is located on the former road from Glen Lake to Float Bridge on Lake Bomoseen. This road was still driveablein the early1970s but has since been reduced to a trail. Away up in the woods about half way between Glen and Float Bridge stood the Andrus place, in the 1970s long abandoned but still standing and open to the breezes. It eventually collapsed and the debris was removed an old door served as a bridge on a trail. Some locals still use the clearing as a picnic spot on autumn Sunday mornings. Inex Andrus was musical, a fiddler. He and another Andrus are in a circa 1904 photo of the employees of Downes and Delehanty's Cedar Mt. Quarry. Congo Barber and Willis Virginia also fiddled in West Castleton. They were of African heritage. These gentlemen added a little diversity to what Im sure was a very Irish West Castleton music scene. (an early version of Afro Celt Sound System) :-) This road eventually comes out in the backyard of the Johnson family on the east side of Float Bridge. For years Johnsons had a boarding place for summer tourist and fishermen. The family has a nice article in the Book of Rutland County Biographies. The family still resides there.
