    3. Hi, Patti, The particular index I use gives the name in 1860 as John "Terlon", rather than "Testin". Your John "Testin" family still seems to be in Wallingford in 1870 but the name in 1870 is spelled John Tierman [1870 Vermont, Rutland county, Wallingford, page 47 (written, left corner) or 789 (stamped, right corner)]. John Tierman, 60, born Ireland, farmer with $1000 real estate and $300 personal estate; Ann, 46, born in Ireland; John, 18, born in Massachusetts, farm laborer; Annie, 16, born in Vermont, housekeeper; Patrick, 15, born in Vermont, attending school; Hattie (female), 10, born in Vermont, attending school; Willie, 3, born in Vermont, at home. In 1880 he appears to be listed as John Tiernan [1880, Vermont, Rutland county, Wallingford, page 446C.] John Tiernan, 67, farmer, born in Ireland; Ann, 58, wife, keeps house, born in Ireland; Matthew, 19, son, laborer, born in Vermont; William, 12, son, at home, born in Vermont, attended school. Female "Hattie", from 1870, has become son "Matthew" in the 1880 census. My guess is that the family member said "Mattie", and the census taker misheard and drew his own conclusions. Members of this family do not seem to be living in Rutland county in 1900. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Patti Schroeder" <pschroeder3@new.rr.com> > I am researching a Testin family that I found in the 1860 census for Wallingford, Rutland, Vermont. > There was a John b 1811 Ireland, Ann b. 1821 Ireland John 8,Hannah 6, James 4, and Patrick 2. 3. Wow That sure says why they did not show up as Testin in the next census . I was going off ancestry and they have it listed as Testin but after I looked at the actual image it does look like Terlon. There is no crossed T. Thanks for showing me that !!! Indexes, whether on paper or on line, are just "addresses" to the records themselves, and should seldom if ever be regarded as evidence in their own right. Darrell Darrell A.
