County Court The County Court adjourned on Wednesday, after a session of about two weeks. The past week has been one of unusual interest; the trial of Ariel Martin of Calais for the murder of Lucius Ainsworth (and Jennison Wheelock) attracting large crowds of spectators in the court room. In this case the defence(sic) put in the plea of insanity; but as our readers can see by the testimony which we publish on our first page, failed to sustain the plea and the jury, very justly we think, brought in a verdict of "guilty". Next came the trial of John Gleason for the manslaughter of John Courtney of Middlesex. In this case it appeared that there was a gathering of Irishmen at the house of John Gleason in Middlesex, where liquor was freely used and a melee ensued in which Gleason stabbed Courtney in the side of the neck, from which wound Courtney died about a week after. The jury returned a verdict of "guilty". On Wednesday morning the prisoners who had been tried and convicted of the crimes of which they were charged were brought into court to receive their sentences. Ariel Martin having been called, the clerk propounded the usual question, "have you anything to say why the sentence of the court should not be pronounced upon you at this time for the murder of Lucius Ainsworth?". The prisoner not seeming to understand the question, it was repeated. He replied: "I did kill him." The court said that under the circumstances he considered it necessary to pronounce the sentence which the law imposes without any extended remarks. " the sentence of the law is now to be pronounced by this court, and that sentence is : "That you, Ariel Martin, be hanged by the neck until you are dead and that you be imprisoned in solitary confinement in the State Prison at Windsor in the county of Windsor until said punishment shall be inflicted. AT such time as shall be directed by the warrant to issue in that behalf by this court in pursuance of the statute made and provided. Patrick Mahon was also sentenced to three years hard labor in the State Prison at Windsor, to commence this day and pay the costs of prosecution and said Mahon to stand committed till this sentence is complied with. Gleason was sentenced to seven years hard labor in the State Prison. Hi listers I'm looking for the marriage of Lydia Martha Allen (b 1843) and Joseph Kilgore (b 1841) which is said to have taken place in Rutland Co in Dec 12, 1867, possibly in Danby. I'm not sure why they were married in Vermont; both were born in Erie Co, NY. Lydia's parents were both born in VT; her mother Rebecca Fiske in Rutland Co; her father Dr. James Allen in Bennington Co. Both parents died in 1852 and Lydia may have returned to the Danby area to live with family. Joseph Kilgore's family had moved from NY to Illinois in 1856, and after marrying Lydia and Joseph lived in Illinois until about 1871. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Katie
