This helps me alot. The Family history that I have for my Douglas line is:"A collection of Family Records-Douglas" by Charles Henry James Douglas, Pub. 1879. I have title page and preface concerning how he obtained his source info. I am hoping DAR accepts this, but I am still verifing with other documentation. I had assumed that if I started with myself and worked back to the Patriot, that the Patriot would be sourced. I sourced back and found out DAR has my Patriot, but there are questions. A#033626 and 033635 are my Grandfather's Patriot numbers and DAR has concerns with them in the comment section. I'll keep plugging along and I appreciate everyone's help. Family histories, are acceptable if the book has been printed and you can get a copy of the title page and the publication date page as well. The same holds true for bibles, historical society books or pamphlets, you need that title page and the date published. Keep trying you will find what you need when and where you least expect it. Your time period is right on for me. I'm researching Rutland. VT. for my GGGG-Grandfather John Douglas who lived there from 1798-1812. He had 6 children born there. My GGG-Grandfather Robbins Douglas, is who I am trying to connect to his father John. I am working with a DAR Regent in my area and she will not accept things like: town histories, family book that was written on the Douglas line in 1879, cemetery records unless I have a Historical Society front page and their seal, etc. The microfilmed copies of the newspapers, which relate to my John Douglas; I presume, they would accept. This is a struggle, but I am glad that they are so diligent. That is why I asked the question. Joan Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Understood. Oziel Smith was in Clarendon from 1779 to around 1800 and I have found some mention of property transactions in old country history books online. At least he had the decency to have an unusual first name. His brother Joseph Smith (one of many, no doubt) was a Green Mountain Boy (possibly even before the war, but I have no solid proof of that) and lived in Otter Creek at the time his father's will was proved about 1794. Whether that's where he had always lived is unknown, but I did find mention of SOMEbody named Joseph Smith having an inn at that location. Noah Smith (just a humble young farmer, not the judge and Masonic temple leader) was Oziel's son, arrived in Clarendon with him in 1779. I'm not clear when he left. He was in New York by 1811, probably ten years before that, but again, unknown. His first marriage may have been in Clarendon. It would be fabulous to find out who he married and when and where. Each booklet is indexed. However, with the name Smith, it is not something I would like to go through each issue checking for you. What Smiths are you seeking? So..........are these enticing-sounding extracts indexed in any way? I had ancestors (Smiths) living in Clarendon beginning with the 1770's. I mean, I have a limited genealogy budget and I can't just blindly purchase everything I'm interested in, but if there is a way to help me identify that a resource contains info that cites specific individuals, that might be a path I'd want to walk down. You might check with your library to see if they can borrow microfilm for you from other libraries; there is usually a small fee per roll. However, most of the microfilm that I am aware of don't start until the late 1850s. Dawn Hance and Joann Nichols have printed booklets of Rutland Weekly Herald extracts for the time period from about 1792 to 1835. To purchase, I think you can contact Joann Nichols at jnichols@sover.net Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I had no idea this existed! This is most certaintly an abstract of his will. Wife and children are all there. Seems as if my John was on the outs with his dad, as John's heirs (Asa's Grandkids) received and he is not mentioned at top with his brothers. I want to try to locate the original will as this is a Calendar of Wills, an abstract. Any thoughts on where that might be? That might have John's children listed since they are the heirs. Thanks again Joan Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
