Joann: we have been in contact before, not for the Rutland Herald , but for the Vermont Gazetter where you found a reference to a letter that was never picked up for my John Douglas in the P.O.. DAR will not except that reference as proof that he is my Grandfather. Julie in Ca. It seems to me that if we have Douglas's in Vermont that we are probably going into the same line. I have posted my complete linage on this message board. If you would like to go out to Joanvangorder and look at my posts it explains. Thanks everyone and I will keep in touch with new developments. I am looking for an obituary, and the burial place, of Sarah Hicok / Hickok. I believe she d Feb 1846 as there is an entry in the Rutland Congregational Church records with that date. She was Sarah Finney m to Harrison B. (Benedict) Hickok in Pawlet, Rutland Co. in 1843; Hickok was listed as living in Poultney. Only child of Sarah was b 1844 in either Poultney or Fairfield as baptism is listed in Fairfield Congregational Church's records which also state that Harrison and wife subsequently returned to Poultney. Sarah's tombstone is not in any of Margaret Jenks books nor was she found in any listing for Hampton NY where many Hickoks are buried. -- Marjorie "Be glad of life because it gives you the chance to love and to work and to play and to look up at the stars."~ Henry Van Dyke

RE: the snake at the cemetery... I was there a couple weeks ago and did indeed come across a snake...frequently seen them there...but this was not a rattle snake, albiet it long! "He" saw me first and went under a grave stone! I saw him slither away... In the far past...my father has killed a rattle snake there although...we were always quite aware of them especially with the stone wall there... I am from out of town and was disappointed to see some distruction to the section on the far left as well...one stone missing... And as a P.S. to Joan...thank you for the lead to the library re: obits. on microfilm! I found several! Had a great day! The Rutland Daily Globe was published from about 1873 to 1877. It then merged with the Rutland Daily Herald, which had been around since at least 1861. They became the Rutland Daily Herald and Globe from about 1877 to 1882. After that it was simply called the Rutland Daily Herald, or the Rutland Herald, still publishing today. If anyone is planning on visiting the Chippenhook cemetery in Clarendon, Vt. to do family research, please read the following. I received a call from the Clarendon Town Hall this morning warning me that a 5 foot rattlesnake was spotted there over the weekend. Rattlesnakes are kind of rare in this area, please be careful. My husband and I have been doing some volunteer work in this cemetery recently. Joan H. Bixby Genealogy not just a hobby, but a labor of love.
