    1. [VTRUTLAN] William Gleason, Rutland ,Vt.
    2. Source, Rutland Vt.Herald--Mon.Oct.22,1917. RUTLAND, Vt. DESERTER GLEASON COMMITS SUICIDE Rutland ,Vt. Soldier Shoots Himself at Railroad Station in Bellow Falls, Vt. William H. Gleason, son of Mr. and Mrs.Fred A. Gleason of No. 60 North street, Rutland, Vt., a deserter from Camp Bartlett, Westfield, Mass., shot and killed himself instantly at the railroad station in Bellows Falls, Vt., Saturday morning at 5 o'clock. The bullet entered the body in the upper abdomen. The body was brought to this city Saturday night on the evening train and taken to the father's home on North street. Young Gleason was a member of company H,first vermont infantry, and while stationed at Fort Ethan Allen gave the officers there trouble on two occasions because he overstayed his leave of absence. At one time he was traced by the Rutland police to Worcester, Mass., where he was found by government officials. Later, while the troops were stationed at Fort Ethan Allen and just previous to their leaving for another encampment, young Gleason, who was 21 years old, was arrested on Curtis avenue in this city where he was staying with a woman friend. About 10 days ago Gleason was granted another leave of absence from the camp at Westfield and several days ago the police received word here that he had overstayed his leave again and was wanted by the military authorities. Since the receipt of this telegram Gleason kept in hiding. SENT BACK TO CAMP BY FATHER. On Friday the newspapers were informed that Gleason was wanted and as a consequence he was placed on the "sleeper" Saturday morning by his father, who purchased a ticket for him back to Westfield, this bring the second time his parents had tried to have him return to camp. Gleason, left the train at Bellows Falls and after standing about the platform for an hour, walked over to the baggage room door and shot himself. He had been carrying the revolver loaded while in this city, a gun which he purchased in Rutland. Gleason was in Springfield, Vt. at the outbreak of the Mexican trouble and he enlisted in the company of that town at the time. He leaves besides his father and mother, three half brothers, J. P. Gleason of this city, E.H. Gleason of Rocester, N.Y., and F. J. Gleason of South Royalton, Vt. and a sister, Miss Cora A. Gleason of this city.

    3. County Court The County Court adjourned on Wednesday, after a session of about two weeks. The past week has been one of unusual interest; the trial of Ariel Martin of Calais for the murder of Lucius Ainsworth (and Jennison Wheelock) attracting large crowds of spectators in the court room. In this case the defence(sic) put in the plea of insanity; but as our readers can see by the testimony which we publish on our first page, failed to sustain the plea and the jury, very justly we think, brought in a verdict of "guilty". Next came the trial of John Gleason for the manslaughter of John Courtney of Middlesex. In this case it appeared that there was a gathering of Irishmen at the house of John Gleason in Middlesex, where liquor was freely used and a melee ensued in which Gleason stabbed Courtney in the side of the neck, from which wound Courtney died about a week after. The jury returned a verdict of "guilty". On Wednesday morning the prisoners who had been tried and convicted of the crimes of which they were charged were brought into court to receive their sentences. Ariel Martin having been called, the clerk propounded the usual question, "have you anything to say why the sentence of the court should not be pronounced upon you at this time for the murder of Lucius Ainsworth?". The prisoner not seeming to understand the question, it was repeated. He replied: "I did kill him." The court said that under the circumstances he considered it necessary to pronounce the sentence which the law imposes without any extended remarks. " the sentence of the law is now to be pronounced by this court, and that sentence is : "That you, Ariel Martin, be hanged by the neck until you are dead and that you be imprisoned in solitary confinement in the State Prison at Windsor in the county of Windsor until said punishment shall be inflicted. AT such time as shall be directed by the warrant to issue in that behalf by this court in pursuance of the statute made and provided. Patrick Mahon was also sentenced to three years hard labor in the State Prison at Windsor, to commence this day and pay the costs of prosecution and said Mahon to stand committed till this sentence is complied with. Gleason was sentenced to seven years hard labor in the State Prison. 3. St. Raphael's church, Rutland county, Poultney, Vt. founded 1884 There is no record of priests visiting Poultney previous to 1846, when Rev. John B. Daly offered Mass for the newly-arrived railroad laborers and continued services here, at three month intervals, over the ensuing ten years. A small brick church was built in 1864, replaced by the present St. Raphael's, built in 1902. Rev. Jerome Gelot, who became the first resident pastor in 1884, secured the present rectory, one of Poultney's historic houses. St. Ann's mission at Middletown acquired a lot in 1883 and built a church in 1885. In May, 1948, Bishop Ryan blessed St. Frances Cabrini mission church, a Protestant church purchased in 1946 and converted for use by the Catholic congregation of West Pawlet. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/0AC.2ACI/2561 Message Board Post: Letter sent to Mrs. Charles Bassett in 1964 by Julia McCann Castleton VT.: My Grandfather, Simon Goodyear Bassett was born Dec. 25, 1833 in Sharon, VT. He was 9 years old when his father, a Dr., died at the age of 41. He had two sisters and one brother. His mother was left with little support and it was necessary for her boys to live with other persons and working from place to place until they were 15/16, receiving such schooling as could be taken advantage of in the intervals of their labor. When grandfather was 15 years old his mother bought a farm on the East Hubbardton road - known then as North Britain. Her house was typical of the times with a summer kitchen, wood house, carriage house, etc. all attached. She also owned the house located at the point of roads where the sculptor now lives, (I'm sure grandfather would have much to say if he could see the strange(naked)figures on his property). My grandfather's mother married the second time - a man from Massachuetts, Hollis Freeman. He had two sons older than her boys and after a few years grandfather went west and settled in Tuscola. IL. He built the first grocery store and post office, and managed both. It was there he met and married Mary Robertson in 1862. Their daughter Avah was born there. Back East the following year, Mr. Freeman became ill and died in 1863 - again leaving Grandfather's mother a widow. Simon G. and family returned to Castelton in 1863 to manage the farm for his mother. There they had 2 more children, my father Clinton & Uncle Charles. His mother died in 1885 leaving the farm to her son. In 1876 Grandfather built a saw mill at Margaret falls. This was a lucrative business. He also had a Maple Sugar orchard. In August of 1886 he was one of the committe of 7 who selected the site on Bird Mountain to build a Masonic Monument. last page of this letter is missing. Would like to connect with anyone in this line. Nancy

Surnames: Robinson Peinert Pinert Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/0AC.2ACI/89.1 Message Board Post: I am looking for a connection to Zilpha Robinson born in Vermont and married Frederick Peinert (Pinert) in Wood County, Ohio on April 24, 1858. Guessing she was born in the 1830s. I have found other Zilpha Robinsons in Vermont from other periods - perhaps it was a family name and they are related. There are three Robinson children without parents in the 1850 census for Montpelier, Washington County, Vermont. Each is living nearby with different families, perhaps relatives. James Robinson, 18, lives with Martha Fuller; Judith Robinson, 12, lives with Delia and Alfred Wainwright; Zilpha (Silva, Zilva) Robinson, 15, lives with Eliza and A. Waterman. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
