I found the info you refer to on page 41 of the 1900 census of Proctor included in the other townships section on Ancestry records. The previous page, 40, is very dark and difficult to read on the copy I was viewing. It seemed that several houses over was a residence with someone named Moon or Moore as head, with children, servants and nurses in the household, at least five of them. I could not real all of the names for folks living there, nor could I for the next two sets of names, which made it unclear to me if there was one house or residence or two from the one including the nurses. Would someone from the Sandin family be in need of nursing care at that time? Could they be living next door for that reason? Probably Cathy is the most experienced person I know on census reasoning and I am sure she will weigh in. _________________________________________________________________ Stop worrying about overloading your inbox - get MSN Hotmail Extra Storage! http://join.msn.com/?pgmarket=en-us&page=hotmail/es2&ST=1/go/onm00200362ave/direct/01/

This appears to be simply a boarding home. Hilda/Hattie Willman/Wellman seems to be supporting her small children by taking in lodgers. In later censuses, as her children got older, they supported her and she stopped taking lodgers. A husband is not in evidence although the censuses list her as married. Redfield Proctor Jr. was evidently a college student. Perhaps this was a location convenient to his college or he just wanted to be on his own. He was later vice-president of the Vermont Marble Company. Actually, with the skipped line, it is not even completely clear that he was in this household. If you are looking for guesses about why your father and uncle might have been in a boarding home without their parents, perhaps their parents/parent worked odd hours or were unsettled and relied upon Mrs. Willman to give the children a stable environment for getting to school and getting meals. There was an Axel Zandin living nearby but without his wife. Was this their father? ----- Original Message ----- > I am looking at the 1900 census for Proctor VT. However, Fanny's father seems to have been a civil war soldier. If you send to NARA for service and pension records, you might find some interesting information. The Vermont in the Civil War site had this information: Reed, Frederick L., rank 2nd Sergeant, 14th Vermont Infantry, Company D. He was born 1/12/1837; died 12/1/1905, and is buried at Fair View Cemetery, Benson, VT.

Folks: I am looking at the 1900 census for Proctor VT. Listing number 365 includes 17 individuals. They are listed as Head, 2 sons, 2 duaghters, 11 boarders and one "blank" entry. The blank entry is for 21 year old Redford Proctor, Jr. My father(Gustaf Zandin age 5) and Uncle (Ozwald Zandin age 9) are listed as Boarders. As best I can read it, the surname of the "Head" is "Nellman". Ages of the "Boarders" are 35,9,6,5,4,3,9,5,65,60,12. Can anyone help me identify this group of people? Is this perhaps the "Poor Farm" that I have seen referenced on some lists? Any idea as to why Redford,Jr would be listed with this group? If it was the "Poor Farm", would he have been involved with running it? Thanks Miles Sandin 301 Sandstone Circle Bridgewater, VA 22812 (540) 828-6874 msandin@sheltiesys.com

In 1860, Frederick Reed, 23, tinsmith, lived in Benson with parents Jonas, 50, shoemaker, and Armena C. Reed, 59. All born in Vermont. Also living with Alonzo Reed, 28, a shoemaker born in NY and his wife Senelda, 27, born in Vt. Also living with the family was Sarah Dorsey, 25, a milliner born in NY. (Since Frederick later married a wife named Sarah, perhaps it was Sarah Dorsey.) In 1870 Fred L. Reed, 32, was living as a farmer in Benson with his wife Sarah, 32, and son Harry F., 1. All were born in Vermont. In 1880, F. L. Reed, 42, was living in Benson as a tinsmith with wife Sarah, 41, son Harry, 12, daughter Fanny, 9, and daughter Callie, 2. All were born in Vermont. In 1900, Frederick L. Reed, tinsmith, lived in Castleton. He had been born in Vermont June 1837 and was 62, married 36 years to Sarah M., age 61, born in Vermont Feb 1839. They had had 3 children, all still living. Living with them was daughter Fannie, born in Vermont May 1871, age 33. She was a music teacher. Harry F. Reed, possibly Frederick's son, also lived in Castleton. He was 35, born in Vt. Sept 1865, boarding as a farm laborer with a man named Endearing Johnson. Harry had been married for 7 years to Lizzie A. Reed who was a servant in the same house, and they had a son Harry S. age 4. Lizzie was 28, born in NY in Aug 1871. Harry S. was 4, born in NY in March 1896. Callie K. Smith, age 22, wife of Raymond Smith, 22, was also living in Castleton. He was a farmer, born July 1877 in Vermont. She had been born May 1878 in Vermont. They'd been married for three years, no children. In 1910, Ray E., 32, and Carrie (sic) K. Smith, 31, still lived in Castleton. He was a farmer; they'd been married 14 years. Both were born in Vermont. In 1910, I did not run across an appropriate Frederick, Sarah or Harry Reed in Rutland county, or Riggs with wife Fannie in Rutland county. In 1920, Fannie Riggs was a widow living at 46 Kingsley Ave.in Rutland with two children, Rachel, 14 and Robert, 13. She was a 48 year old music teacher, born in Vermont. Her children had been born in Vermont. In 1920, Callie Smith was divorced, age 41, no occupation, living in Castleton. She had no children. Ray was not listed in Rutland county. In 1920, neither Fred, Sarah nor Harry Reed are listed in Rutland county.

I am trying to figure out the parents of Dana H. KILBURN (and his wife Sarah "Sally" POWELL). The 1860 US census for Hampton, Washington County, New York lists: Dana Kilborn age 71 male day laborer b. VT (head of household) Sally Kilborn age 68 female b. VT Alvira Kilborn age 32 female b. NY from the census data he was born 1788/1790 in VT They had the following children: Truman, Lyman, Lovina, William, Rosella, Julia Ann, and Alvira In 1790 the US census lists four Kilburns in VT with only John Kilburn in Rutland County, VT. However, he probably can be eliminated by this item: From http://www.rootsweb.com/~vermont/RutlandShrewsbury.html: ....John KILBURN, a surveyor, migrated to Shrewsbury in 1785, from Walpole N. H. In 1789 he was elected town clerk and remained in the office for forty consecutive years. It is said that during the Revolutionary War, he, with his wife, son and daughter, successfully resisted an attack of nearly four hundred Indians on their New Hampshire home. In 1836 he removed to Canton, St. Lawrence county, N. Y., where he died at an advanced age. So highly was he esteemed in Shrewsbury that at the March meeting held in Shrewsbury 1878, it was voted that a set of marble head stones be erected above his grave in Canton, at the expense of the town of Shrewsbury. The vote was carried out to the letter.... The 1800 US census lists four Kilburns in Rutland County, VT, but we can probably eliminate John of Shrewsbury (see above) and John, Jr., of Shrewsbury. This leaves Abraham (of Poultney) and Roswell (of Castleton). from http://www.rootsweb.com/~vermont/RutlandPoultney.html: Hiram KILBURN was born July 7, 1799, in Poultney, his father, Abraham KILBURN having come here from Litchfield, Conn., some years before. Abraham KILBURN died in 1806. Hiram was killed by the cars October 21, 1867, while on duty as agent at the station at Poultney. He held for years the office of deacon of the Congregational Church, and left descendants who still survive, among them being Mrs. William FARNUM and Albert KILBURN. Does anyone have any clues about this family? John McCarty __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Win a $20,000 Career Makeover at Yahoo!
