Hello, Listers! I am going to attempt this once again. I have received help from many of you over the past few years and I am very grateful to all of you. I am still searching for more HIGGINS information. I am trying to locate the place/date of death for my great-great-grandmother, Susannah Elizabeth FARRELL, who married Jonas HIGGINS. He died 1895 in Rutland Town, and had lived in Ira, as did his brother. Their daughter (my great-grandmother), Bertha HIGGINS, married John GRAY in 1902. I cannot locate Bertha or the rest of her family (mother or sisters, Etta/Ettie Mae, Flora Belle, Jessie) on the 1900 Census. Her brother, Wallie, lives with their aunt, Mrs. Wm. HIGGINS (this was Susannah's sister who married Jonas's brother). Anyway, it seems the females of the family just disappeared. I do not know if Susannah remarried or what. My great-grandmother went by the nickname "Birdie," so it is possible that the other girls had nicknames or were married at this point. I know that in Rutland County there were two or three distinct HIGGINS families. In Addison County, there was only my line of HIGGINS, as far as I know. If anyone has a HIGGINS piece of data, please share it with me. It may connect, somehow! I am also trying to locate my great-great-great-grandmother, Margaret SEARS/HIGGINS/NICHOLS. She remarried in 1878 to Paul NICHOLS, but I cannot locate her on the 1880 Census. There is a Paul NICHOLS in Addison County, but he is listed as a widow. Can anyone add to my confusion and mayhem? :-) I'd love for you to try! Thanks and God Bless! :-)Ronie Kendig Texas ---------------------------------------- My Inbox is protected by SPAMfighter 135 spam mails have been blocked so far. Many people in the vicinity were surprised and saddened to learn of the death Friday afternoon of Mrs. Ida Griswold Bishop the good wife of Geo. H. Bishop. Mrs. Bishop who was a daughter of Thompson Griswold a well known farmer near the lake, was a native of this town and a young woman universally esteemed for fine qualities of mind and heart. She was about 29 years old and until a few days ago when stricken with her final illness had been a remarkably active and healthy person. Her funeral was largely attended Sunday afternoon, the religious services being held at her late home and conducted by her pastor Rev. Anketell, rector of St. James' Episcopal church. The burial was in the family lot in the new cemetery and the following among her friends acted as bearers: William Brown, Eli Drake, James Jones, Daniel Wing. Again, I have only the clipping, not the name of the newspaper. John McCarty __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Win a $20,000 Career Makeover at Yahoo! Many readers of the RECORD will regret to learn of the serious illness of Thompson Griswold, a well-known farmer and most excellent man, who is rapidly nearing the end of an honourable and useful life, the victim of an incurable attack of Bright's disease of the kidneys. Harvey Thompson Griswold died at home Monday of Bright's disease of the kidneys. Mr. Griswold has been in feeble health for a long time and although his death has been expected for some time, it was a shock to his many friends when it came. Mr. Griswold has been a lifelong resident of Castleton and highly esteemed by all who knew him. He was 65 years of age. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock from his late residence and was largely attended. OBITUARY Harvey Thompson Griswold Harvey Thompson Griswold, who died Monday of last week at his farm on the lake road in the town of Castleton, was one of the best farmers in the town and a man universally esteemed for integrity and all the traits of character tending to make the kind and quiet neighbor and useful citizen. Mr. Griswold was born in Castleton July 4, 1833, and ended his days on the same farm which for many years had been the home of his worthy father, the late Harvey Griswold, and with the exception of a few years in which he worked at his trade as a builder with his brother-in-law, Frank Davis, in North Adams, all of his days were passed in his native town. His funeral was held from his late home the Wednesday following his death. Religious services were conducted by Rev A. Taylor, rector of the Episcopal church, Fair Haven. The burial was in the family lot in the Castleton Cemetery. The procession accompanying the remains was one of the largest ever seen in the town. F. E. Mascott had charge and the following were pall bearers: John Stephenson, Horatio Barney, Wm. Brown, L. Culver, Edward Sherman, Horace Moody. Mr. Griswold is survived by his widow, two sons and two daughters. Sadly I have only the clippings, not the name of the newspapers. John McCarty __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? More information would be helpful since early censuses tend to give numbers but not names or give limited information about people and their relationships. Time frames for location also helps with checking other kinds of records. For example, in 1860 there is a Betsey Willard, age 66, born in Vermont, living in Brattleboro, Windham county, Vermont with Theodore and Mary Green. No marital status or relationship to the family listed. The age is about right. Have you ruled her out for some reason? It might be a good idea to indicate a time frame, if you know one, for when the Willards lived in New York and when they lived in Poultney; children; and approx. dates of marriage and/or death if known. Likewise, for Jane Harsha, you won't, of course, find her listed by name in the early 1800 censuses. Possibly her parents would be listed on her marriage or death certificate. Does she have a connection to Vermont? Was she married, and was the marriage in Vermont? Did she die in Vermont? ----- Original Message ----- From: "John McCarty" <bjmacc15@yahoo.com> To: <VTRUTLAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, April 30, 2004 3:51 PM Subject: [VTRUTLAN] LEIGH, WILLARD of Greenwich and HARSHA of Argyle I have had one of those WONDERFUL connections! I was emailed by another list member who also descends from Jane HARSHA and Joseph McDOUGALL! I'm still hoping for just such a miracle for Betsey LEIGH and Symon WILLARD. Their daughter, Rebecca Ann WILLARD, was born 1830/1831 in Greenwich, Washington County, NY - which was where Betsey LEIGH was born in 1795. Other than this I have no data for these two. The Betsey WILLARD of Brattleboro is the only likely candidate, but Rebecca Ann WILLARD died in East Poultney and the family clustered around Washington and Rutland counties. Hi, Miles, I sure can identify. I have numerous puzzling arrangements in my families. Though it doesn't directly relate to your search, you might like to know that odd makeshift arrangements for children do not seem to have been uncommon. I had a great-grandmother in Rutland who had become a widow and gone to work as a live-in servant in a hotel. She apparently couldn't take her five-year-old son into that situation and didn't leave him with any of her relatives as far as I can tell. She later married a widowed cousin of her first husband, so her first son became both the cousin and the half-brother of my grandfather. However, this first son never lived with the family. He showed up in Rutland at age 20, and I have no clue where he was living all his life. However, based on the next story in this e-mail, I think he might have been "adopted" and raised under a different surname before resuming his birth name as an adult. Another relative lost her daughter and "adopted" a child in place of her dead daughter. This child, as an adult, resumed her birth name. When I contacted a surviving relative of the birth family, an elderly younger sister of the "adopted" daughter, the lady became absolutely incensed at the idea that her sister was "adopted". There was never an adoption, she said, and basically hung up on me. I'm really sorry that I upset her. I had no idea anyone might react that way to the word "adoption" but evidently there is some sad story behind it. Good luck in your search. Cathy --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Thanks for the insight. Yes, Carl Axel Zandin is my grandfather and father of Ozwald and Gustaf(my father). Carl Axel was a marble polisher and the leader of the Proctor Band. There is much info in the Proctor Library about him and the Band. He was an accomplished musician who had immigrated from Sweden in 1892. His entry on the ship's manifest lists him as a "Professor of Music" and he was headed to New York City. I am not sure how he got to Proctor, but my guess is the "Recruiters" from The Vermont Marble Co probably were the cause. The rest of the family came to Proctor in 1893 and my father was born in Proctor in 1894. There is a daughter Regina (my aunt Regina) and a mother Ida Bruse Hansdotter Zandin (my grandmother). Ida died in 1907 at The Brattleboro retreat after a long stay. Her death was listed as "exhaustion from chronic mania". Ida's sister and brother in law had moved from Proctor to Washington DC at some time. In the 1900 census of Washington DC, I find an Ida Zandin listed as an inmate at St. Elizabeth's Hospital which is a mental hospital there. The birth date is 1 year different but the immigration date is about 6 years different. If this is my Ida, my guess is that she and Reginia may have gone for a visit and perhaps mental difficulties arose at that time. How she would have been moved to Brattleboro remains to be discovered. There is also a daughter of Karl, named Axelina by his first wife who had died in Sweden. Axelina married Charles Johnson and they and their daughter Anna are listed on line 236 of the 1900 census. Charles was listed as a marble polisher as was Karl. They later had a daughter Margaret who married a Gates who ended up in sales management for The Vermont Marble Co. In 1906, Karl and the 2 boys moved to Turners Falls Mass. Proctor/Rutland newspapers expressed surprise as to his leaving the Proctor Band. My guess is that he wanted to be closer to Ida who was at the Brattleboro Retreat at that time. Karl died of a heart attack on June 10, 1907. He is buried at the Aron Clark Cemetery there. Ida died on Sept 20, 1907 at Brattleboro and is buried at Fairfield which I believe is an un-marked mass grave area on the hill at the Brattleboro retreat. After Karl died, Oz and Gus went to Washington DC to live with their aunt and sister. They can be seen there in the 1910 census. There are so many missing pieces of this story. I welcome any ideas from others as to how and where to fill them in. Obiously the principals in all this have passed on, and the social stigma of mental illness was hidden from all. Only through genealogical research by my brother Robert and I have the pieces started to come together. Hilda/Hattie Willman/Wellman seems to be supporting her small children by taking in lodgers. In later censuses, as her children got older, they supported her and she stopped taking lodgers. A husband is not in evidence although the censuses list her as married. Redfield Proctor Jr. was evidently a college student. Perhaps this was a location convenient to his college or he just wanted to be on his own. He was later vice-president of the Vermont Marble Company. Actually, with the skipped line, it is not even completely clear that he was in this household. If you are looking for guesses about why your father and uncle might have been in a boarding home without their parents, perhaps their parents/parent worked odd hours or were unsettled and relied upon Mrs. Willman to give the children a stable environment for getting to school and getting meals. There was an Axel Zandin living nearby but without his wife. Was this their father? ----- Original Message ----- > I am looking at the 1900 census for Proctor VT. I now see Cathy has responded and she is much better at the census than I am. Re: Redfield Proctor, Jr., I don't think he is in the household. It looks like he was forgotten to be included earlier and they entered him just before the town of Proctor listings. That happened with my great Uncle Patrick Lucas in the Mount Holly census in 1880. _________________________________________________________________ Stop worrying about overloading your inbox - get MSN Hotmail Extra Storage! http://join.msn.com/?pgmarket=en-us&page=hotmail/es2&ST=1/go/onm00200362ave/direct/01/
