This man was a veteran of the Civil War - a member of the 104th Ohio infantry. (I have written a short history of this regiment) Oscar Sterl was Captain of Co. A and eventually rose through promotion to be Colonel of the regiment. As the mortally rate during the civil war was so high, late in the war he assumed command of the brigade in which the 104th was attached. Almost immediately after the war ended he relocated to Rutland -- the reason why is unknown to me. There in Rutland he was married to Elizabeth Porter, daughter of local physician Cyrus Porter. Oscar lived the life of a farmer at least through 1880 when the federal census was taken. Do you have any records of a James Carter who lived on the Vermont/Quebec border (St. Armand). He was married to Orpha Corey from Stanbridge around 1836. There is an older James Carter in the 1825 census for the St. Armand area listed as between 40-60 yrs old, married, with children. I don't know if they are related or where in the U.S they came from. Surnames: Rogers - Vermont Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/0AC.2ACI/199.2 Message Board Post: I have been searching for my gr-grandfather William Rogers. Do you know of any William Rogers born between 1837 & 1845? His tombstone has his birth as 1838. He joined the civil war in Michigan in 1864, age 24 (b. abt. 1840). The Michigan census lists the following: 1870 MI - age 26, b. Ontario, abt. 1844 1880 MI - age 35, b. Ont. abt. 1845 (father - Ireland, mother - Ireland) 1900 MI - age 56, b. Vermont abt. 1844 (father, Vermont, mother, Vermont) 1910 MI - age 69, b. Vermont abt. 1841 (F. Vermont - M. - Vermont) 1920 MI - age 83, b. Canada abt. 1837 (F. Canada, M. Canada) This is his last census, he died in 1920. Could he possibly be a descendent of any Vermont Rogers? I think his correct yr. of birth was 1838. His wife is believed to have been French Canadian, born in Quebec. Montreal has been mentioned, but unknown. As you can see, the census are only more confusing. Any help?

Surnames: Williams Spofford/Spafford Baldwin Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/0AC.2ACI/2596 Message Board Post: I am trying to find the Richard Williams and Sophia Spofford family. Richard married Sophia Spafford/Spofford d/o John & Mary (Baldwin) 7 Jun 1807 at Salisbury Litchfield Connecticut. Sophia's father John Spofford settled in Rutland Vermont but died in Lewis Co New York. Her mother Mary Baldwin is buried in West Street Cemetery Rutland Vermont. Richard and Sophia supposedly had a son George and daughters Sophia and Julia. Is there a list of burials in this cemetery that I can access? Trudy Hawley sent me a copy of a report from the Vermont Historical Magazine (1867) page 1151 Col Spofford Family.....John Spofford Sen. died Apr 24 1823 aged 71. Mary Spofford Sept 9 1842, aged 92. "In the summer of 1874, we had a pleasant historical visit from Mrs Williams. Sophia, the last but one of the twelve children of old Capt. Spofford of Bennington battle and Revolutionary fame, from whom we took the following notes -"My father was a Captain of a Company in the Bennington Battle at the approach of Burgoyne, he called out his militia and from his own stores provided for his company. My mother drew a pension for years on account of drawing the lines of rations and dealing them out. I was the eleventh of 12 children born by the large spring in Tinmouth, except Horatio, who was born in Dorset just after the Bennington Battle. My parents settled in Tinmouth shortly after they were married. All the citizens fled before the approach of Burgoyne. The whole inhabitants started off at once. They crossed the mountain in the night. Mother rode on horseback, Heman behand her on the pillion. Mother intended to go to the seaside but could not go further than Dorset. ! Abijah Pratt, who married my father's sister Phebe, accompanied the women and children. He was one of father's militia men. After the war my parents returned to their place in Tinmouth. When my father died, 200 different lodges sent their representatives to his funeral. They came from Utica New York and from the lodges all through that section. It was the largest funeral I ever saw. He was a high Mason - had been a Green Mountain Boy officer and lived to be an old man. He was Captain the the Revolutionary War and afterward Colonel in the Militia." But nothing about where Sophia lived! Anyone out there connected to this line of the Williams/Spoffords?

If by chance they are one and the same I would like to see the Obit? I would also be interested in the Obit for Eva J Cheedle if it can be made available. Thank you very much. > > > > http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/amhome.html The URL given above (and I hope it works) has a great deal of information on the Library of Congress collections - including WPA interviews held with Granite workers in Barre, Irish laborers in the state, etc. I hope you can take the time to read them. They are absolutely priceless. Also, the Burlington Free Press had an article on the Granite workers in Barre and the murder of Elia Corti on the front page of section C, the Living section, done by Tim Johnson. I put the exact title of the article in to find it, as I did not find the Free Press site itself very helpful in conducting searches. "Bygone Barre brought to Life" is what you have to put in Google or what have you. and there is a book of interviews done by Mari Tomasi and Roaldus Richmond now being published bythe New England Press, edited by Alfred Rosa and Mark Wanner, "Men Against Granite" - now for sale. The article about the book is right next to the Bygone Barre article. _________________________________________________________________ MSN Toolbar provides one-click access to Hotmail from any Web page FREE download! http://toolbar.msn.click-url.com/go/onm00200413ave/direct/01/
