Surnames: Lane Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/0AC.2ACI/551.919.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Bonnie, Since you know where in Ireland Patrick Lane originated you can check at a LDS Family History Centre for microfilm copies of church registers for Askeaton for family info. If there are no microfilm copies there, you could contact the church directly for a lookup. I would recommend, however, waiting until the end of the current tourist season to do that. Irish churches get many walk-ins now requesting church register searches for ancestors. You might also check his church records in Mt. Holly for addl. info on his birth location. Often US churches required copies of baptismal certs from the Irish church or at least verification of church membership from Ireland. Depending on how well the US church maintained those records, there may be info there. Griffiths Valuation of Ireland included those who owned or rented land, not just land owners. Often people are entered more than once since they needed to rent land in different areas if it was poor quality for farming. Eilis O'Hara

In the 1880 census the head of household is Burr Rockwood. There are 34 Rockwoods in Bennington that year. At this time I don't have a way to access the actual census image. Then In 1920 he is in Bennington again, however there is a Henry M Rockwood in Boston, Mass. that was born in Vermont in 1866. In the 1930 census, The Bennington ,Henry is married to a Margaret and has 3 daughters. Margaret, Helen, Virginia. The other Henry is in Somerville, Mass. married to a Gertrude and has a daughter, Gertrude. Not sure if this helps but thought I would offer it. 1. Thelma Hazelton
    2. Joann H. Nichols
    3. Thelma E. Hazleton was born 17 April 1905 in Fair Haven; father was Carle Henry, bookkeeper, born W. Rutland, age 29; mother Maud Hill, born Putnam NY, age 23. Recorded Fair Haven. Carle H. Hazleton married 8 Nov. 1899 (age 24), clerk to Annie Mae Martel. Father was John H. Hazleton; mother Abbie S. Mortrom. He was born W. Rutland. Married by Rev. G.W. Phillips, Cong. Min., recorded Rutland. It appears that Carle and Annie must have "parted" as Thelma's mother was listed as Maud Hill and it was the first child of the mother. Whoops, found a death for Annie May Hazelton, 31 Jan. 1900, Rutland City, age 23.9.5, married, b. Rutland, father Louis Martel, mother Emogene; cause of death was embolism, uraemia, miscarriage, was a housewife, recorded Rutland. Carle Henry Hazelton died 18 Sept. 1907, age 31.11.24, b. W. Rutland, father John Henry Hazelton, b. VT, mother Abbie S. Mortrom, b. Pittsford, VT, was a marble boxer; cause, run over by train at East Creek Bridge, Rutland Railroad. Recorded Rutland.. I think this is the birth of Carle Henry; listed as male with no name, born 25 Sept. 1875, W. Rutland, father John H. Hazelton, hotel keeper, mother Abbie Mortrom, b. Pittsford, recorded Rutland. There is also recorded a birth for Carl H. Hazelton, born 24 Sept. 1875, W. Rutland, father John Haselton, hotel keeper, b. Townshend, mother Abbie Mortrom, b. Pittsford, recorded Rutland. I only copied vital records for Hazelton (many spellings) through 1908, so don't have more on these folks. However, I have a note beside the birth of the unnamed son, that John's parents were Benjamin F. and Lucinda F. Hazelton. Don't remember how I knew that. Hope this helps someone. Joann Nichols

William LANE was indeed b. in Limerick in 1844, in fact it's Askeaton, Limerick, according to William Lane's father Patrick's tombstone in Pleasantview Cemetery in Ludlow. You helped me solve a big questions regarding William and Bridget LUCAS LANE..William's pension papers said over and over that he only had one child, but in the 1900 census I find a William LANE (child) and what I thought was Livvie LANE (child). Thanks for letting me know these were extended family members! I can remove lots of ???'s from my file on this family! William's Civil War pension file is an incredible wealth of info. It arrived in a box...not the usual envelope. The most interesting tidbit, however, was that Patrick Lane was NOT the biological father of William Lane. Martha DAVENPORT LANE had been married before, to a Michael O'DONNELL, who fathered William. Michael O died sometime before 1848, and when Martha married Patrick (William was "a baby") William took the Lane name. I will email you off-line with some additional info on this clan. I'd sure love to learn of Martha Davenport O'Donnell Lane's ancestors...I know there are/were many Davenports in Mt. Holly...were they related??? Thanks for the info. Bonnie Chicago
