    3. Hey, Patty! With dates like 1888 and 1883, it's easy to see how they could get mistaken for each other. And without a close date, I know how nearly impossible it is to find anything specific in those closely packed columns of the Rutland Herald! Marvellous stuff there though, if you can find it! 3. Actually, I don't think the newspapers are available through LDS, although extracts by Dawn Hance and Joann Nichols are. There are a variety of libraries around the country that carry some or many of the various incarnations of the Rutland Daily and/or Weekly Herald. Some will even lend them on Interlibrary Loan if your city library has an interlibrary loan program. Following is a list of libraries that carry some or many of the Rutland Daily/Weekly Herald years. I've arranged them by state and put years available if they were given, though I'm not entirely sure the years available are complete or accurate. It would be a good idea to check catalogues or call to confirm years available before you visit. 1. Re: Irish Emigrants to Canada and Vermont
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/0AC.2ACI/2617.1 Message Board Post: Patty, Thanks for the post and information on Marjorie Kohli's website as well as the books. The surnames you listed are found in many counties. Hester, Mann, Usher, Lucas and Pickett aren't as numerous as O'Brien, Kennedy, Murphy, Sullivan, Donnelly, Cunningham, Duggan and Flynn which are extremely common surnames. I'll post some information on locations of those surnames on the respective surname message boards later in the week and will let you know when the postings are available. You'd need to know not only which county the emigrant originated in but also the townland or civil parish within that county in order to research in Ireland. There's an explanation of these civil divisions at http://www.ancestry.com/library/view/news/articles/2435.asp You'll also find in US civil and church records many phonetic spellings of the Irish placenames which can be difficult to interpret since the placenames as spelled in Ireland aren't generally pronounced the way they're spelled. Castle Coole may actually be Castlecoote which is a townland in Co. Roscommon. For names of the civil divisions in Roscommon as well as in all other Irish counties, see http://www.seanruad.com and just select whatever county you're interested in. There are generally no surviving census records for the 1800s for Ireland so the main research resource would be church registers in the specific location where the emigrant originated. You'd also need to know the emigrant's parents names in order to trace them thru the church registers. Many families had the same given names which can be extremely confusing. Civil records didn't start until 1864 but wasn't mandatory until 1880. I don't subscribe to lists at all. They generate too much e-mail on too large a variety of topics, there's no consistent thread in the postings and no search feature. If you click on the post header from the message board post in the list you can respond directly to the message board and the consistent topic thread for the particular message. Eilis O'Hara

    3. Hi Patty, I remember your kind efforts. I had been told by a family member that her date of death was 1883, if you recall. Then Florence Reil of Castleton (she and husband John laboriously copied and record cemeteries in Castleton) gave me a date of 1884 for newspaper articles and the journal entry she'd found, etc. I could never find anything on ANY of the dates! You had written me that Jenks had Carrie's death as 1888, so that's what you were going by. Easy to see how 1888 and 1883 can be misread, especially on a gravestone! I was absolutely thrilled today to get this from Cathy, as you can imagine. I know you did everything you could to try to find this for me some time ago, too. I am amazed that Cathy found so many articles in so many different SOURCES! Amazing. Again, thank you both for your good efforts on my behalf. 3. Hi Cathy, Thank you *VERY* much for this. And Bless You for even remembering I was in search of this info. It's been a long, long time - wondering what happened with this family. The mother (Nora Bisbee Goodwin) of the murdered child (Carrie Goodwin) was daughter and of Lydia L. SMITH Bisbee Jones Smith of Weston, Vermont, by her first husband, James Bisbee. Lydia is my 2nd great aunt through my Smith side (Weston VT clan) and later married my great-great grandfather, William Carlton Jones (Castleton Joneses). Those two families (Joneses of Castleton and Smiths of Weston) are very much 'intertwined.' It was a 2nd for both of them. William's first wife, Mary (Polly) Denison, had died young from childbirth complications. William's son, Frederick Carlton Jones of Castleton, married Nellie Jane Smith of Weston VT, niece of this Lydia (still following along???? lol). Lydia's THIRD husband was a John L. Smith of Castleton, whose 1st wife was a Mary (Roak/Roach, Rouke or McCormack!). I still don't know if this John Smith is somehow related to our other Smiths. The murdered child, Carrie, was Lydia's granddaughter. My great-great grandfather William Jones died in 1898 so he was around when all this took place about his step-daughter Nora and little Carrie.. And, while I'm not surprised this story wasn't talked about amongst family members, I am a little surprised that the story didn't at least get passed down through the generations. Thank you for all you sent. I'll try to find out even more about what took place after this tragedy occurred. 3. Wendy, I noticed your post from January asking about the murder of Carrie Goodwin in 1888, which you had read about in Dr. John M. Currier's scrapbook at the historical society. Actually the child's death occurred Sept 22, 1883, not 1888. I don't have access to the Rutland accounts, but the story is mentioned in several papers in other parts of the country, though not the full details or follow up. However, perhaps the more accurate date will help you follow up: New York Times Sept 23, 1883 A Mysterious Tragedy An Unknown Man Shoots a Woman and Kills Her Child Troy, N.Y., Sept 22 - A startling and mysterious tragedy occurred last night about midnight at Heron (sic) Goodwin's pleasure resort near the bridge at Lake Bomoson, Castleton, Vt. While the men of the house were out on the lake fishing, leaving young Mrs. Goodwin and her child alone, an unknown man fired at the woman through the window. The shot missed her, and she ran to where he child was on the bed, when the assassin entered and fired two mor shots, killing the child. Thinking he had killed the mother, the fellow ran off, but Mrs. Goodwin was not injured. The assassin is unknown, and no motive can be ascribed, as Mrs. Goodwin is a young woman universally loved. A strong force is on the murderer's track, and it is thought he will be captured. Oshkosh Northwestern (Oshkosh, Wisc.) Sept 25, 1883 A Baby Shot in Bed A child eleven months old, daughter of Theron Goodwin, Jr., of Castleton, was shot dead in the bed with its mother. The mother claims that an hour before a shot was fired at her through the window, and later someone entered the room and killed the baby. Stephens Point Journal (Steven's Point, Wisc.) Sept 29, 1883 An infant child of Theron Goodwin, Jr., of Castleton, Vermont, was killed in the arms of its mother, by a shot fired through the window. Ohio Democrat (New Philadelphia, Ohio) Oct. 4, 1883 The arrest for murder of Mrs. Goodwin, of Castleton, Vt., who recently reported that her child was killed in her arms by an assassin firing through the window, was reported on the 24th. (Note: I don't know the results of Mrs. Goodwin's arrest, but in 1900 Theron S. Goodwin, age 39, and his wife Nora, age 36, were living in Hubbardton. They had been married 19 years and had 2 sons, born about 1887 and 1892. A third child had died.) --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
