I meant to say "Brandon", not Benson, as Benson has been on the site for some time. Sorry for any confusion. Hi Cathy and All, Im sure you've noticed, in the old Rutland Heralds the constant listings in the 1890s of men from West Rutland and the marble industry, "obtaining positions" all over the northeast and the nation. This was a huge migration. What you had were the children of these very large families growing up and there not being enough work for many of them so off they went elsewhere, usually for good. Even if work was available many were fed up with the low wages and lack of opportunity. I saw where western miners were getting three dollars a day at a time when West Rutland quarrymen were getting around one. Issues of the Rutland Herald around Christmas and New Years are a good place to catch up with these folks as they would come home for holiday visits to the old folks. I assume this out migration of what would have been the next generation of marble workers contributed to the influx of polish immigrants into the area to take their place. Peter Patten

I have a pension application that says Laura Woodard died 1814 in Vermont near Lake Champlain. She would have been born 1780-1790. Do you have information about a Laura Wood(w)ard or a George Wood(w)ard who performed a second marriage for Laura's spouse?
Ann, Sorry I thought I had shared this with you from my last visit about a month ago in Vermont. When I get home this evening I will send the birth information and what I can read from the death certificate. It appears that they only had this one; however, they could have had more and I just have not found them yet. It also appears that at some point he stopped being a painter and worked for the railroad. From the SS information I have he died in NH. I'll send that too. At this point it appears the she is still living and I am trying to find her. Source, Rutland Vt.Weekly Herald--14 Sept. 1805. Shrewsbury, Phinehas Page has farm for sale, 100 acres a little east of Meeting House, good stand for store or tavern on Main Road from Windsor to Woodstock. Has good house, barn horse-shed and saw-mill. Also another 200 acres.
I obtained the death certificate for Richard FOYE; however it is almost impossible to read. I am hoping someone could look-up the death and funeral notice for him in the Rutland paper. It looks like he died either on August 2 or 3 1954 he would have only been a 8 1/2 years old. His mother was Joan Benham Foye and father was Pershing Foye. He was buried in St Joseph's Cemetery in Rutland VT. I am wondering if it was an accident or something along those lines if so there could be an article related to the incident. I truly appreciate any assistance in finding this information. Thanks Judy Judy Doyle Turner jturner8372@charter.net
