    2. Source, Rutland (Vt) Daily Herald--Mon.Aug.31, 1908. DEATH OF W. H. DICKENSON. Was a Veteran of the Mexican War, Fighting Under Gen.Taylor and Stonewall Jackson. William H. Jackson, a veteran of the Mexican war, died at his home on South Main street Friday night after a three years' illness with a cancer. Mr. Dickenson was born in Ticonderoga, N.Y., April 11, 1823, but lived in that place only a few years. When a boy of 18 years of age he ran away and enlisted at Danby (Vt) in Company H, 9 th regiment, United States Infantry at the outbreak of the Mexican war,and he was in active service with the regiment under Gen Zachary Taylor during the entire war. Stonewall Jackson was his captain. He was one of the first to scale the walls of the City of Mexico when that city was taken. While in Mexico he was stricken with yellow fever and was left behind when the army came north. He remained there for nine months and during his severe illness his hair turned white. He would relate hair breadth escapes and exciting experiences by the hour and was loud in his praise of his commanders. 1. Polly Maynard Manly 1795 Pittsford Vermont
    2. Still trying to identify my gggrandmother's, Mary Jane Maynard Ware, parents. On the 1880 census for Lorain County Ohio, Mary Jane's mother is listed as Polly Manly. Polly is a widow, born in Vermont about 1795. Polly's father was born in Connecticut and her mother was born in Vermont. I am assuming that Manly was possibly a second marriage. Her first marriage would have been to a Maynard that I have not been able to identify as of yet. I know that the Maynard family was living in Pittsford, Rutland County, Vermont at the time of my gggrandmother's birth in 1820. I thought that I would post the 1880 census information that a fellow researcher sent today. I am hoping that someone on this list can connect with Polly Maynard Manly and help me identify her siblings or "first" husband. Thanks, Jim in Ohio

These folks are my gggrandparents, and they were married in Pittsford, Rutland County, on 23 March, 1862. I have a copy of the Groom's marriage info, and would like to have the names of the bride's parents, which are not listed on the groom's info card. By the way, on this card the bride's name is listed as Adeline Ditley. I am quite certain that her maiden name was Dutilly, but the spelling may vary (Dutilley, Dutille, Dutil, etc.)

    3. Hi, Jean, Just realized that this message is (I think) directed to me! Yes, Dawn and I have extracted articles from the Poultney Journal. It is entitled Historical Sketches Published in the Poultney Journal between 1884 and 1889. Originally we intended to only make a copy of all the articles in the P.J. that were written by Judge Orin L. Ray, but as we went through the microfilms there were other articles that gave information on towns and people who lived in the Rutland County area. Writers whose articles were copied are Orin L. Ray, Barnes Frisbie and Cyril Carpenter. I have copies available at a cost of $35.00 each. There are 182 pages iincluding the index. Anyone interested may contact me at jnichols@sover.net My mailing address 110 Chestnut Street, Brattleboro, VT 05301-6579. Thanks for asking! Joann Nichols

    1. Hayden
    2. For Jim On Hayden I note you have a Mary Jane Hayden. Do you have a Susannah Hayden b 1810 in your line? Her mother's name may have been Silvee or Silence maiden not known. Susannah was my 4gg grandmother, she married Michael Gilson Bundy. Census reports indicate she was born and died in Vermont. However her mother was listed as being born in Massachusetts. I have no further information on my Hayden's. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks, Tammy Wells Grube in Florida but still a Vermonter at heart.

    1. Re: Maynards
    2. Thank you Jean. The information you sent was very helpful: Congregational Church Cemetery,Pittsford,vt Maynard,Harriet, dau.of Ira+Lucy died 12/14/1817 age 2y24 d George F.,son of I.F+M.J.,2/3/1853-1/7/1854 Harriet Maynard being born in about 1815 in Pittsford makes a possible sibling for my Mary Jane Maynard ( b 1820). I appreciate the possiblity of climbing higher on the Maynard/Mainard family tree. From Caverly's History of the town of Pittsford Vermont: Page 445 Ira F. Mayard, son of Ira, married Mary Jane Hayden, October 25, 1850. The 29th day of March following, he purchased of Asa Nourse one acre of land directly east of the said Nourse's house, and, during the ensuring summer, built a house upon it, which he occupied till 1858, when he sold it to Jeffrey Barnes and removed to Prescott, Wisconsin. I am assuming that Ira F. Marynard was first married to Lucy and then a second marriage to Mary Jane Hayden. I am hoping to research his first marriage. Perhaps my Mary Jane was born from this marriage. Thanks again, Jim in Ohio

    2. Joann H. Nichols
    3. Jim, As I read your query, I had a thought that perhaps the name might have been Menard, a French Canadian name. My husband had a 2nd great grandmother whose surname was said to be Manor and it turned out to be Menard back in Canada. These people lived in the Salisbury and Middlebury area of the state. Good luck, Joann Nichols
