He had to brothers who lived around Mechanicville NY, and some unmarried sisters and the parents who stayed in Castleton. There were 2 images of those .... one had it flipped up to see if there was any writing under the paper and the others did not. 3. Oh, no! sorry if I led you to believe that. What I meant was that in my continuing search to help you find Stephen, I found another line claiming relation to Rev. Thomas. 3. Carol, May I post this to the HOOKER list. Many there believe there is no record of Samuel's second family of children. This is wonderful news for many who have been looking. But now I know I was correct. But whoever put that S.P. Hooker as my Stephen G.Hooker's father in the LDS record was definitely wrong. I have NO books on any Hooker info at all. The only book I own is the Huntington Lathrop family lineage book as my husband is a Lathrop. He is directly descended from Rev. John Lothrop/Lathrop of Barnstable, MA. Interesting sidebar. Rev. Thos Hooker came to America on the Griffin. One year later, Rev. John Lathrop came to America...on the Griffin. I thought Stephen Gardner Hooker was the son of Samuel Porous Hooker. But several different people who have him in their lineage have told me basically 2 different things. That he didn't have a son named Stephen and/or he had other children that no one knows the names of. I had found the name S.P. and Olivia in the LDS records which had been entered by unknown people. As we all know, the info that we often find is not always correct or the right info. After being told that Samuel Porous Hooker couldn't or very probably was not his father, I kept looking. I then found and also had brought to my attention, the Stephen Shattuck Hooker whose mother was Eliza, a widow; older brother Silas and younger sister, Martha, who married a Baird. Martha Hooker Baird is very well documented on many family trees. I went through all census records and found Stephen S. Hooker, still unmarried in his 60's, living with his sister, Martha Baird and her children. No Mr. Baird though. So by process of elimination, Stephen S. Hooker is not Stephen G. Hooker's father. Very, very probably Samuel Porous is not Stephen G. Hooker's father either. Although there is a chance that my Stephen G. Hooker might be one of the unnamed children; but the times that they "might" have been born don't fit quite right. In the meantime, I found through online searching the obituaries for Stephen G. Hooker and his wife, Helen Nash Norton Hooker in the Chicago Daily Tribune. Both stated burial in Graceland Cemetery in Chicago, IL along with some of their children and grandchildren So I contacted the cemetery and sure enough, found Stephen G and his family buried there. I was able to get a copy of the burial card and other info including a letter written by Stephen G. Hooker's grandson, Jerome Beardsley Hooker, stating all of Stephen G. and Helen's children...ones dead and still alive at that time which was 1934. Their son, Edward C. Hooker, Jerome's father, had just died and was buried in Graceland. **The letter stated that George Graves Hooker, son of Stephen and Helen, had a son named Preston Nash Hooker, who disappeared a little less than 20 years before 1934 and had never been heard from again. This will tie in below in the descendancy listing.** So I started searching online on Ancestry. com and all the other genealogy sites including Rootsweb. Searched though online databases for IL state and much more. I was finally able to find out that we still had family alive that were descended directly from Stephen G Hooker, the same as I. I was able to find and talk to on the phone, a Robert Jerome Hooker, who was the son of Jerome Beardsley Hooker who died in 1966 and was also buried at Graceland in the family plot. We had a very long conversation in which he told me that Stephen G Hooker was born in Brandon, VT He gave me other info that he was aware of but said he couldn't remember who Stephen's parents were. But he said he had been told that we were descended from Rev. Thos Hooker. I also spoke with his 2 daughters, who are both right around my age (55). They were thrilled to hear from me and are going through all their old trunks where they know there are original letters, photos, etc. But most is very probably from the Beardsley family but hopefully some Hooker things will be there. Robert is now 78 years old, very healthy and very mentally fit. But he said that he and his wife and children moved to Southern CA back in the 1950's and didn't keep in touch with most of the other branches (cousins) that were Hookers. His great Aunts, Helen Hooker Moyer and Mercy Hooker, spinster, both lived into the 70's and were daughters of Edward C. Hooker and sisters of Jerome Beardsley Hooker. So, I know that Stephen G. Hooker was born in Brandon, VT in May of 1824. I kept searching and found a Stephen Hooker, age between 40 and 50, living in Brandon, VT in the 1830 Census. He had 2 sons and 4 daughters listed along with a wife but no names. One of the sons was in the age above 5 but less than 10 age range. Stephen Gardner Hooker would have been 6 years old in 1830. So the info Jean M.sent to the Forum/list is very interesting to me: Old Town or Congregational cemetery in Brandon Hooker,Dan---[broken][DAR:Daniel]died 10-1-1818] Wm G. died 10-1-1818 in 3rd year.[Sons of Stephen Abigail] Hooker,Daniel, died 2-13-1817 age 67 and I am wondering if these children that died the same day, were MY Stephen G. Hooker's older brothers and that the Stephen and Abigail Hooker listed as the deceased children's parents could be the same Stephen Hooker and wife in the 1830 census record. Also, could Daniel Hooker, listed deceased at age 67, be MY Stephen G. Hooker's grandfather. So, I am now looking and trying to find info about the Stephen and Abigail Hooker listed. Also Daniel Hooker. Here is the descendancy listing for Stephen Gardner and Helen, in case anyone is interested. My lines are in RED or * in front of number if color doesnt work here. *1.Stephen G. Lathrop nee Farrell/Hooker ----- Original Message ----- From: Carol McK To: [email protected] Sent: Thursday, July 12, 2007 3:06 PM Subject: Re: [VTRUT] trying to find father of STEPHEN GARDNER HOOKER As was looking for Stephen Gardner Hooker, born in Brandon, I found the following in my Hooker notes -a query from you: "Stephen Gardner Hooker b. 1824 in Poultney. He married Helen Nash Norton and they moved to IL where Stephen became a grain merchant. I believe that Stephen was the son of S.P. Hooker of Poultney. I am not sure what the S stands for but it could be Samuel. Stephen's mothers first name could have been Olivia." At the time, I sent you the lineage on [Samuel Porus Hooker was one of the ten children of Samuel and Elizabeth Martin Hooker. He had a sister named Olive.] You have found evidence since that he was not the son of SP Hooker in Poultney, but born in Brandon. Do you still think the mother's name was Olivia? What I've found here shows a mother's name of Eliza. But whether this is the correct Stephen or not, I do think it is the correct family. They did seem to have a habit of using surnames as middle names, presumably relatives. [There was an Olivia Hooker the right age living in Saratoga in 1850 with a Chester Hooker] I found a Stephen Hooker living in Goshen, Addison county in 1850, so started there. [At least I'm guessing it was him, right name and birth year and Goshen is a neighbor to Brandon.] Eliza Hooker Goshen, Addison, VT abt 1777 New Hampshire Silas Hooker Goshen, Addison, VT abt 1807 Vermont Stephen S Hooker Goshen, Addison, VT abt 1823 Vermont Martha Hooker Goshen, Addison, VT abt 1823 Vermont Source Citation: Year: 1850; Census Place: Goshen, Addison, Vermont; Roll: M432_920; Page: 31; Image: 62. I kept finding references to Daniel Hooker, and everything seems to work out except for one glaring item: the birth year and middle name of the Stephen shown below is not the same. I would pursue this angle though, because though census does not tell relationships, it appears that Stephen, Silas and Martha could be siblings. As you will see from the excerpt from the book, he was still single and living in Goshen in 1855, which is consistent with your knowledge of him marrying and moving in 1850s. I could not find definitive proof of any more of Daniel/Mary Gates issue. It is possible that a sibling to Silas also married an Eliza/Elizabeth and had a son named Stephen, only this one born in 1824 with middle name of Gardner. 294. When you have a chance, would you send me the following records? dsc03453 John Merton of Pittsford dsc03190 John Towers of Hydeville My email address is [email protected] I have a high speed connection and a ~1,000 MB mailbox limit. I suspect (hope, really) that John Merton is John Murthough/Murthur. John Murthough and sons lived in Pittsford and Hubbardton and family lore says the Murthoughs/Murthurs were originally from Mayo. Plus John Merton's birth year in your index is about what I had calculated for my John Murthough. Thanks again! LeRoy Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Should be born around 1770-80 for Stephen Hooker and 1750 birth for elder Daniel. Sorry. I emailed the list as I was not aware that posts to the email list did NOT go to this Forum Board. I received an email from Jean that stated the following: Old Town or Congregational cemetery in Brandon Hooker,Dan---[broken] [DAR:Daniel]died 10-1-1818 ] Wm G. died 10-1-1818 in 3rd year. [Sons of Stephen Abigail Hooker,Daniel, died 2-13-1817 age 67 I have a copy of the 1830 census for Brandson and it shows a Stephen Hooker having 7 children and one being a boy that is listed as being in the same age range my Stephen G. Hooker would be in that year...around age 6. I am hoping this Stephen could be my Stephen's father. And perhaps Daniel age 67 at death is my Stephen grandfather. Does anyone have any info at all of this older Stephen Hooker (b.around 1870-80) married to Abigail and/or Daniel Hooker b. 1850 and d. 1867. Thanks for any help and again thank you to Jean B. for this information. 1. [VTRUT] The Saga of finding Stephen Gardner Hookers parents-
    2. Carol McK
    3. Do you know, with one little sentence, you may be back to Poultney/Hampton again??? 'But he said he had been told that we were descended from Rev. Thos Hooker.' Though I'm still convinced that the MA Daniel Hooker figures into this 'saga'. What follows is a letter sent to the daughter of the SE Hooker that Jean just mentioned in her Poultney cemetery ref. it is only part of a letter and I cannot find the original I transcribed it from. But, just as the Samuel Porus I wrote you about before, this family can trace back to the Rev Thomas, or so they say. It almost sounds like this Rev. Thomas Hooker was a name that people liked to use as an ancestor. Here in this discussion we've found 3 separate families who all say they descended from him. Generally, I've found that letters such as this are quite reliable. Jan 29, 1905 Dear Elfleda, In yours of 22nd you say you want to know who you are. You are the daughter of Solomon Egbert Hooker, the son of Daniel, the son of Thomas, the son of James, the son of Hezekiah, the son of John, the son of the Rev, Thomas Hooker who was born in Mayerfield, Leicestershire, England July 7th AD 1586 and came to New England in 1632. Went to Hartford, Conn. & served as Pastor of Christ Church in July 1635 & died July 7th 1647. he left one son [a clergyman (Named) John in England. His son Samuel Hooker settled in the Ministry at Farmington, Conn. His children's names were Thomas, born June 10 1695. Samuel born May 29, 1661, William born May 14, 1663, John born February 20, 1664, James born October 27, 1665, Roger born Sept. 4, 1668, Nathaniel born Dec. 28, 1671, Mary born July 3rd, 1673, Hezekiah born Nov. 7, 1675, Daniel born March 25, 1678, Sarah born May 5th 1681. The names of the children of John Hooker, the third son of Samuel are Hezekiah Oct. 14, 1688, John born Dec. 17, 1690, Abigail born May 25, 1691 [John and Abigail died in infancy], and they named their next child John. John 2nd born March 6, 1694, Abigail 2nd born Jan. 14, 1697, Mary born June 11, 1700, Sarah born Sept. 11, 1702 [Mary and Sarah were the two wives of Jonathan - Sarah data questionable cannot read], Joseph born Feb. 15, 1704, Ruth born April 16, 1708, Roger born Sept. 17, 1710. The names of the Children of Hezekiah, son of John are Hezekiah born Oct. 30, 1717, James born Jan 13, 1719, Josiah born April 2, 1722, Abigail born Sept. 25, 1724, Mary born Jan. 8, 1726, William born June 20, 1729, Jesse born April 27, 1732, Eunice born Oct 30, 1734, Ashael born Dec. 29, 1736, Sarah born May 30, 1739. Daniel Hooker, son of Thomas and born Sunday Aug. 2, 1795. married Orpha Giddings, Tuesday Feb. 28, AD 1828. [That's all there was.] Also, I did notice the Chester/Helen- mentioned it was in the census for Saratoga. So you've ruled out the Stephen Shattuck Hooker. I thought there must have been a connection because the Stephen living with Eliza in 1850 was the age you mentioned. And the two others living with them coincided with the family members in that book. It's still possible that it was your Stephen, just living with a relative, not his mother.
