It is my understanding the "Llwyn Coed" is the name of the family farm. As of July 2007 a distant cousin, who still lives at Llwyn coed, Wales, provided my with our family history from 1650. Here is the information that I just learned about: SION OWEN WILLIAM lived at Bwlch Gwynog, which is part of Llwyn Coed. His son IFAN SION married ELINSION, and their daughter MARGARET ACH IFAN (1715-1805) married MICHAEL JONES (1726-1772) and they lived at Llwyn Coed and together had 3 children: OWEN MICHAEL, IFAN MICHAEL & SION MICHAEL. I am a descendant of OWEN MICHAEL(1750-1841) MARGIAD. Their son JOHN OWEN was the next to live at Llwyn Coed. He married Gwen and they had 7 children: Richard Owen, born Abt. 1824 Llanrug Owen Owen, born Bef. 1830 Llanrug Cathere Owen, born Abt. 1830 Llanrug John Owen, born Abt. 1833 Llanrug Michael Owen, born Abt. 1836 Llanrug William Owen, born Abt 1839 Llanrug Mary Owen, born Abt. 1844 Llanrug Their son MICHAEL OWEN (1836-1895) and his wife JANE(nee GRIFFITH) married about 1870 and raised their 9 children at Llwyn Coed. Elizabeth Thomas, 43, born in Vermont to parents from Wales was in Poultney in 1900 as a widow. She had had 7 children, 4 of them still living. The children were John, 18, Roland, 15, Ellen, 9, and William, 5. All born in Vermont. The two oldest boys are quarrymen in the slate quarry. In 1910, she lived in Poultney with the same children - called John, 28, Rowland, 25, Eleanor, 20, and William, 14. She's listed as a farmer on the Fair Haven Rd. The following looks like your Rowland Walters. In 1870 he is listed in Poultney, Vermont, as Walter Rowland, instead of Rowland Walters. He is age 50, born in Wales, working in a slate quarry. He has a wife Ursula, 45, born in Wales. His children, all born in Vermont, are William, 15, Elizabeth, 11, John, 10, and Reese, 9. William works in a slate quarry. In 1880 he is listed in Poultney, Vermont as Rowland Walters, age 62, born in Wales, slatemaker. His wife is Ursula, age 60, born in Wales. His children are William, 26, John, 20, and Rees, 18, all born in Vermont. The older sons are slatemakers, although William is listed as having been unemployed for 5 months in the year. Rees is listed as insane. Daughter Elizabeth, in 1880, is possibly married to Robert Thomas and living in Mineville, Essex County, New York. At least, this Elizabeth Thomas is 23, born in Vermont, to a father born in Wales. Robert Thomas, 37, was born in Vermont, and their 10 month old daughter Eula was born in Vermont. Robert worked in the mines. Hope this provides a lead. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. A. Boissonnault. Here is some information on the churches associated with him: "Historical Rutland" by F. E. Davison says that Father J. A. Boissonnault was one of three priests sent to Rutland to organize Sacred Heart of Mary Parish in 1869. (Other sources call it Immaculate Heart of Mary.) They were supposed to administer a large area of Rutland county from there but that grew too expensive so they split the area up. "A history of the town of Fair Haven, Vermont" by Andrew N Adams, published in 1870 says, "St. Louis Catholic Church - Rev. J. A. Boissonnault is now pastor of the church, supplying also the church at Orwell one Sunday in each month." The 1904 book, "Successful Vermonters" says that as rector of Fair Haven, he was also in charge of Castleton, Orwell, Proctorsville and Shoreham. In 1874, Father J. A. Boissonnault was appointed pastor of Our Lady of Victory Church in St. Johnsbury, He was pastor there for 29 years. His biography from "Successful Vermonters" has been transcribed and posted at the Vermont-L Gateway site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~vermont/24SuccessfulVermontersBoissonnaultRevJA.html Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have my grandfather's First Communion certificate: James Dyer Dawson, 1 June 1873 (My note: DOB 1861, Castleton Township), Church of St. Lucien (or Lucian), Castleton. Priest's name appears to be I.H. Boissonnaule. The certificate is written in French. >From what I can find, St. John Baptiste and St. Louis de France (Castleton and Fairhaven) had been founded by 1873. Was there perhaps still some sort of mission church in Castleton, at that late date? I understand for many years there were circuit riding priests who came to a particular place 3 or 4 times a year. Was this still the case in 1873? I plan on checking with the Burlington Diocesan archives. I've looked on the VT French-Canadian Gen Soc site. Also, two great aunts, who died as infants, have been located, thanks to the work of a research friend in MA. They were born and died in the 1860s, and not the 1850s as is carved on the family monument in the Castleton Cemetery. If anyone knows of some Fairhaven or Castleton area newspapers which might have carried notice of their deaths, I'd be thrilled to hear from you! I'm also hoping word on the mission church might lead me to where I'll find info. on the girls' births. We have searched for these little girls for years, and it's a thrill to found something about them! Sarah Dawson DOD 15 Jan 1865, Castleton, diphtheria, age 1 yr 10 months. Charles O'Reilly, pastor of St. Bridget's at West Rutland, the names of several children were mentioned as follows.] On Tuesday morning the children of the Sunday school, numbering 400, with many of their parents, attended an anniversary mass, celebrated by the pastor. After service in the church, Father O'Reilly was invited by the children to visit them in their rooms which were beautifully decorated with evergreen and flowers. In behalf of the boys of the school, Master James BURKE presented his pastor an elegant gold-headed cane, inscribed with the pastor's name and the dates 1855-1880. Master Dan DAVINE, in behalf of the smaller class of juveniles, presented a beautiful gold pen and holder. On the part of the young misses, Miss Annie CARMODY delivered a beautiful and appropriate address at the conclusion of which she presented the honored guest of the occasion a large gold cross.
