Frank Whitney of West Salisbury, who disappeared Tuesday morning from his home, and for whom a posse had been searching, wandered into the F.B. Howard jewelry store here yesterday morning, evidently suffering from some mental disease. The proprietor, Frank B. Howard, knew him, communicated with his brother, E. J. Whitney of West Salisbury, and the latter came in an automobile yesterday afternoon and took his brother home. The man is said to be only temporarily demented, owing to overwork and family illness. Frank Whitney left home Tuesday morning, drove to Brandon and left his team in a barn there. He is a state road commissioner for his district, and a well-to-do farmer. He did not know how he reached this city, but it was discovered that he came by train. He did not know where he had stopped in Brandon, or what he had done since reaching Rutland. 3. Mike: Oh you don't know how hard I have tried to get records out of Castleton, but when you no longer live in Vermont it is near to impossible without being there to do your own research. I have written to the Historical Society and they have told me that the records aren't available until after 1850ish because there had been a flood. I do what I can every couple of years when I go back, but from visit to visit the information trail gets cold. Maybe some day after I retire I can go back, throw away the world, except me and my curiosity and sit and go thru the dusty records. Out of curiosity did you find the records in Castleton, or were they in Middlesex. I also am guessing from I have found on line, there are many Castleton records in Fair Haven, and I would bet some could be found in White Hall. I also need to commend the girls who put a tremendous amount of info on the Vermont site, they do a great job. Without them the Vermont records would be much harder to find on line. Gosh Mike, you could be another Abby Hemmingway and digitize the records for the entire state (ha ha) Anyhow, you have a great site, I wish my family name began with a "D" Thanks again for putting the records on line. The amazing part is that there are records like this for every town in VT and Rutland Co (except as I understand Poultney which had a fire). And the funny part is I didn't even know they existed till I stumbled across them. Can you imagine a project to digitize all the grand lists and town reports in all the towns in the county? Be daunting but a remarkable contribution to the stock of primary data available on the Web. Maybe somebody will get a grant or something and do it. The other funny part is that in Washington Co right across the border none of this stuff is public -- security and identity-theft concerns, as I was told. Seems silly for the 19th century but there you have it. Vermont seems like a paragon of open government compared to NY. And Patty was right that the town clerk and staff were great. Enough rambling, mainly I wanted to say thanks for your words and hope you find what you're looking for. Peace, Mike Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: cathabes1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.vermont.counties.rutland/4802.1.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Another possibility is that the land wasn't actually being bought and sold. I found several situations among Ira and Rutland deeds in which someone who needed money would deed their property to a neighbor or relative for an amount and then agree that the deed would be void if the money was paid back with interest within a certain amount of time. The land itself never changed hands. For example, on November 19, 1855 Bernard Higgins of Ira deeded four and a half acres of land in Ira to James Mumford of Rutland for $59. He agreed to repay the money with interest in one year or forfeit his property. By mortgaging his property to James Mumford, Bernard Higgins was able to raise ready cash without actually selling his property. James Mumford, meanwhile, was able to make interest on his money by lending it to Higgins, with the knowledge that Higgins property would be his if Higgins defaulted on the mortgage. In another situation, in 1856 Artemus Cooke deeded land to James Mumford for $450. But James, not having the full price, immediately deeded the same land to Bradley Fish for $200. Mumford had to pay Fish $100 plus interest by January 1, 1857 and $100 plus interest by September 29, 1857 or forfeit the property. In a third situation, in April 1871 Patrick and Jane Mcginly of Rutland mortgaged their homestead to Patrick H. Mumford of Rutland for $1200. (Mcginly's first wife, by then deceased, had been a Mumford.) Mcginly gave Mumford 6 promissory notes of $200 each, the first being due with interest on May 1, 1872 and one being due with interest each May thereafter. Donal F. Begley, in "Irish Genealogy, A Record Finder" remarks that this was a usual practice and that "the original mortgage was more usually made between relatives or connections by marriage, the idea being that such family links provided some additional security." I don't know if this applies to the records you refer to, but these were situations of people lending each other money rather than actually buying and selling property, so taxes might not have applied.
