Source, The Poultney Journal--Fri. Apr. 25, 1919 EAST POULTNEY, VT. Kenneth and Neil McCormick of Granville, N.Y., visited their grandfather, O. A. Dewey, this week. E. W. Merriman and daughter Bertha and son Raymond are visiting in New York this week. Levi Munson of the 26th division, who has just returned from France, visited his parents a few days this week, before returning to camp Devens, Seward Munson died at the home of his brother, Charles Munson, last Friday, after a long illness. he is survived by one sister, Mrs. Ida Kilborn and two brothers, Hiley Munson of Mechanicsville, N.Y. and Charles of this place. His funeral was held from the house last Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. Thomas Davison officiating. Burial was in the cemetery in this town. Geo. Landry visited relatives in Middletown Springs last week. Mrs. Henry Wyatt of Troy, N.Y., visited her father, Harvey Haynes, on Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Carmody of Schenectady, N.Y., are visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. Carmody. The sad news was received here Monday, April 7, of the death of Mrs. Raymond Metcalf aged 24, which occurred at her home in Cleveland, O., Sunday, after a several weeks' illness of influenza and complications. Mrs. Metcalf was formerly Miss Esther Fenton daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Fenton of East Poultney. She is survived by her husband and one daughter, her parents, four sisters, and four brothers. Mrs. Metcalf graduated at T.C.A. in the Art Course, in the class of 1915, and was married March 17, 1917, to Mr. Raymond Metcalf of Detroit, Mich. The funeral was held from the home of her parents Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. Thomas Davison who officiated at her marriage, officiating. The many beautiful flowers and large number of friends attending the funeral attest the love and esteem in which Mrs. Metcalf was held by her former schoolmates and friends. The bearers were three brothers, Marvin Fenton, Wayne Fenton , Paul Fenton, Maurice Roberts, Paul Carlton and Horatio Marshall. Burial was in Hillside cemetery, Poultney. Transcribed by, Joan H. Source, The Poultney Journal--Fri. Apr. 5, 1907. FAIR HAVEN, VT. The members of St. Louis' church opened their four days' fair Wednesday evening at Powell's hall. Cards are out announcing the marriage of Miss Ella Shepard, daughter of L. K. Shepard, to Ernest W. Spencer, son of C. W. Spencer, which will take place the 17th. The funeral of Albert F. Palmer was held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. A. E. Foote officiating. The bearers were Sol Maynard Jr., Andy Hopper, Plinney Whitcomb, Harold Whitcomb, Fred Draper and Jesse Dunn. The mill men's union of which he was a member attended in a body. A. M. Hathaway died at his home on Prospect street Monday at midnight of a complication of diseases. He was 62 years old and is survived by a widow and two daughters, Mrs. Helen Belden and Mrs.Fred Bartholomew. The funeral was held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the house. Benjamin Williams has secure a position in the machine shop of the Delaware and Hudson railroad at Whitehall. Thomas Hayes is in New York city. Henry Gates of this place, who has been clerk at the Kingsborough hotel for two years, is spending a few days with his parents, before beginning his new duties as clerk at the Bardwell house, Rutland. Williams was in Shrewsbury Saturday to visit her brother, who was ill. Mrs. George Pierce of Rutland spent Sunday at the home of Rev.D. Perry. Luther Weeks is ill with the grip. The East Poultney Parent-Teacher Association will hold its regular meeting this Friday evening in Schoolhouse hall, at which time there will be matters of special interest presented. Rollin Wescott, who has been at the Cambridge hospital for treatment, has returned to his home here. Mrs. Maude Buxton of Newton, Mass., was a week-end guest of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gates. Miss Marion G. Bliss who has been spending the winter with her sister, Mrs. Francis Symonds in Columbus,Ohio, has returned to her home here. Mrs. Elmer Carr and children of Thomaston, Conn., are visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rollin Wescott. Stedman Aldrich of Dorset was a recent guest of Mr. and Mrs. George Baker. Claude Gates and family of Castleton were Sunday guests of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gates. Miss Flora Carr of Forrestville, Conn., was a week-end guest of Mr. and Mrs. Rollin Wescott. Word has been received that Mrs. William Laughton who underwent two operations at the Mary Fletcher hospital, Burlington, is improving and expects to leave the hospital this week. She will visit at the home of her son, William Laughton in Burlington. Pre-Memorial exercises will be held Friday , the twenty-fifth in the East Poultney school house at 1:30 o'clock. Source, The Poultney Journal--Fri. June 28, 1929. FAIR HAVEN, VT. Miss Agnes Irene Fitzpatrick, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P. Fitzpatrick of this place, and George William Herbert of Troy, N. Y., were united in marriage at St. Mary's church on Wednesday morning by Rev. P. J. Sweeney.They were attended by Miss Frances Wotherspoon of Rutland, a cousin of the bride, and Albert O'Dell of Troy, N.Y. Source, The Poultney Journal--Fri. Feb. 3, 1928. POULTNEY, VT. FORMER POULTNEYITE DIES AT CEDAR RAPIDS. Charles J. Fox, many years ago a resident of this town, and who will be remembered by some of the older settlers, died Friday last at his home in Cedar Rapids, Ia. He had been in ill health for two years. Mr. Fox came to Poultney with his parents when he was about four years of age, and here he received his education and learned the machinist's trade. In the 70's he went west, and in 1872 married Miss Grace Liddle, and soon after settling in Cedar Rapids, where for three years he was a machinist in the B.C.R.&N. railroad shops. In 1881 he became the superintendent of the Cedar Rapids water works, resigning after twenty years and going to Oskaloosa, Ia., where he assumed a like position. About four years ago he retired and returned to Cedar Rapids. He was a member of Crescent Lodge of Masons, Royal Arch Masons, and the First Presbyterian church. Besides his wife he leaves two children, Merritt L.Fox of Cedar Rapids, and Mrs. Martha M. Belting of Iowa City. One sister, Mrs. Heman Mitchell of Dalton, Mass., and three grandchildren also survive. Transcribed by, Joan H. Bixby

Charles Delos Pond, a life long resident of Castleton, died at his home east of Castleton on Tuesday evening, following a long illness. He was born in Castleton July 30, 1870, He is survived by his wife ; two brothers, John P. Pond of Rutland and Fred L. Pond of Brooklyn, N. My grandparents lived in Shelbina, just south of Memphis. I have my mother's life story about growing up there, if you would like it. Source, The Poultney Journal--Fri. June 28, 1929. QUARRYMAN FALLS INTO PIT, DIES IN HOSPITAL. William Sumner, aged 36, died in the Rutland hospital Tuesday night, where he had been taken following a peculiar accident in the Jones quarry a mile north of Castleton. With other workmen, Mr. Sumner was at work on a bench on the side of the quarry when a rubbish box, suspended from the cable, swung near them. In pushing it away his glove caught in the box and he was carried off the bench and into mid-air, where he hung suspended for a few seconds and then dropped fifty feet to the bottom of the pit. Men rushed to his side and found him unconscious, and called Dr. Edward R. Clark of Castleton, who gave him first aid and he was rushed to the hospital. one thigh was fractured, an arm was broken, there were many serious cuts about his head and face, besides terrible body bruises and internal injuries.
