Source, Rutland Daily Herald--Fri. Sept. 25, 1896. RUTLAND, VT. THE HOSPITAL . A Gift of a Free Bed Received at the Board Meeting Last Night. The directors of the city hospital held a meeting at Nichols street last evening, Henry F. Field in the chair. The board received a communication from Thomas J. Lyon containing a check for $250 for a free bed for 25 weeks in the hospital. This gift, as the communication stated, is in memory of Mr. Lyon's daughter, Miss Hattie Lyon, recently deceased. The board passed appropriate resolutions in recognition of the gift and appropriated money for 10 weeks for a young lady patient who will at once enter the hospital. Several local organizations are considering plans for furnishing rooms in the hospital. The expense, including all equipments, linen, etc., is about $100. The heating apparatus of the hospital is somewhat defective and the matter was referred to a committee consisting of George T. Chaffee and E. P. Gilson. Transcribed by, Joan H. Source, Rutland Daily Herald--July 4, 1911. "BANTY" CHANGED HIS MIND. First He Pleaded Not Guilty, But Then Owned Up--Gets Three Months. The mills of justice ground fast in City court yesterday, "Banty" Talbot again caused a quantity of ink to be spread upon the records and four other cases of intoxication were heard. "Banty" was set down for a third offense, but that was putting it mildly. In the morning he pleaded not guilty to the charge and the hearing was postponed until afternoon. At 2 o'clock "Banty" had changed his mind, and he came into court and owned up. Not only that but he made a disclosure. The disclosure, however, was of the variety that police courts are inclined to treat with scepticism, and so "Banty" was locked up to think the matter over. The court awaits a more satisfactory explanation of how and where "Banty" got his intoxicating drinks. A sentence of 30 days in the county jail, with a fine of $15 and costs, was imposed. "Banty's" time will not be counted until he appears in court again with a reasonable story. If he does not pay the fine and costs he will have to spend 93 days in jail for his "third offense." Walter Peters and Clarence Pelkey joined forces Saturday night and annoyed some sober citizens who appealed to the police. They are both employed at teamsters by Hiram F. Noyes. Saturday night having access to the Noyes barn, they took a horse and wagon and enjoyed a drive up Woodstock avenue. Their driving was not particularly successful. In City court yesterday they each pleaded guilty to a first offense of intoxication and paid a fine of $5 and costs. William Crow and Walter Weinle were also arraigned for intoxication, first offense. They each pleaded guilty and paid a fine of $5 and costs of $3.70. State's Attorney Bert L. Stafford prosecuted the "Banty" case and Grand Juror C.B. Costello looked after the other cases. Transcribed by, Joan H. Bixby Genealogy not just a hobby, but a labor of love.
First time post to this board. I am looking for information on the following families from the Granville NY/W Pawlet VT area My G-G-GF Daniel BERRIGAN (or BERGAN/BERGIN) was born in about 1850 in Ireland and came to the Granville/W Pawlet area in about 1867/68. He listed as a laborer or slatemake in all state and US Census records. In the early 1870's, Daniel married a Mary GUTHRIE who was also from Ireland. My G-GF William BERRIGAN was born in 1874 in Granville. I believe William worked in the slate quarries. I am not sure what happened, but I believe Mary (GUTHRIE) BERRIGAN died during child birth in 1877. The family was "broken-up". In the 1880 US Census, Daniel BERRIGAN is in West Pawlet living with a DOYLE family. I cannot find William BERRIGAN in either 1880 or 1900. My G-GM is Catharine SULLIVAN from Adrigole, Beara, Ireland. Catharine arrived in Pawlet, VT in 1902 and lived with her sister Mary SULLIVAN who was married to a John J MCDONOUGH. Catharine helped to take care of the MCDONOUGH's Inn and Saloon. I found my G-GF William BERRIGAN living in Granville in the 1905 NYS census, right next to the MCDONOUGHs. The house is located on the state line and my grandmother always said it was in Vermont - but I believe the house is in Granville. In about 1908, William BERRIGAN married Catharine SULLIVAN. I cannot find a marriage certificate. I found them in the 1910 US census in Granville. My grandmother, Catherine BERRIGAN, was born November 13, 1913 in Granville. Again - I cant find a birth certificate. On Nov 16, 1913, my G-GF started a new job at Sing Sing Prison in Ossining, Westchester, New York. Unfortunatly, my G-GM died in 1917 after a miscarriage and my G-GF died in 1925. After her father's death, my grandmother moved back to West Pawlet to live with her aunt and uncle, the MCDONOUGHs. She lived there until 1929, when Mary (SULLIVAN) MCDONOUGH died of cancer. My grandmother then moved to Boston to live with her uncle, Michael SULLIVAN and his family. Interested in anyone who might be tracing any of the families above or anyone who can fill in the missing blanks. Thanks Kevin
Hi. Records circa 1790 from the Clarendon Land Records book indicate two SMITH children (Thomas, Susannah) died and were buried in Clarendon. Their mother Margaret Walton Smith died there, too; I have not seen any reference that says she was buried there. >From what I have found so far, the family owned property in "Clarendon" (may have been the Clarendon Springs area - this was the 1780's) and in Chippenhook, which is in West Clarendon. By hunting and pecking, I have come up with the following list of cemeteries in all of Clarendon township: Button/Pratt /Smith; Cavanagh; Chippenhook; ClarendonFlats/South; Dean; E. Clarendon; Edmunds; Matteson; Old Marsh; Parker; Potter; Tubb s; Wait; West Clarendon. I have not found the individuals I'm looking for in any of these cemeteries in any online database, including findagrave . Any suggestions? I live in Utah and can't go cemetery tramping in the spring. Sharon

There is an article in today's (Feb.16) Rutland Herald , on the front page along with a photo, about Bernard Dooley of Poultney. Mr. Dooley was a POW in World War 11, very interesting article. I was born in Poultney, I don't recall Mr. Bernard because I was too young at the time , but my sister remembered him. Joan H. Bixby Genealogy not just a hobby, but a labor of love.
