Hi I'm going thru some very old email and ran across this.. If you are still interested in hosting a town page -- Hyde Park still needs a Host. Take a look at the below info on hosting a page James At 02:29 AM 01/12/99 EST, you wrote: >Hello: > >I was born and lived in Morrisville and Hyde Park. Now I live in Albuquerque, >NM. You are looking for help. Just what does that take to do the job? >I have been doing genealogy work on the Collette/Tuthill family for just over >3 years. > >Joe Collette > New Page Set up information *************************** We are always looking for Volunteers. You can volunteer for a town page or to help out with look ups on one of the town pages. I'll walk through both very briefly. I live in California and indicate this to illustrate that you don't have to be in a town to host or provide help. First a little about USGenWeb It is an all volunteer organization that has set up (beginning June 1996) a network of web sites that work as follows: There is a National US site (http://www.usgenweb.org, you may want to visit this site and peruse the pages) which links to each state. Each state links to each County and many of the counties have Town pages. It is our goal to have Town pages for all the towns in the County Town Page: Setting up a home page is not as daunting a task as it appears. Some knowledge of HTML is helpful but you can go along way just by using one of the other pages as a template. (I couldn't spell HTML until I got involved) Once you get used to working with it you can try (in my case) to get creative. If you go to the County page and click on the hosted town pages you can see what I mean. We have built some basic town pages and then simply used that as a template to build other towns. In short it is not as difficult as it may appear. The most important thing is we are here to help. The pages have a set "required" format in that they have to contain certain things but that is fairly simple as the template method of construction allows you, almost literally, to fill in the blanks. After you cover the required items you can add what you want. Some towns have links to the local Chamber of Commerce pages to provide local info for example. It is easy to get a place to have a free host for your page. We use Geocities but others are available, so there is no cost in that regard. Once a page is up and running the maintenance is minimal and driven more by your desire to tweak you "baby" and add things. A basic town page is can be provided if one is not already available. Local Look-up Volunteer This is so easy that we call it a "no-brainer". You simply volunteer to look up info (queries) from people in books you have. You can also run back and forth to the local Library if you like. I don't want to minimize the importance of this, all the pages need this support and the amount of traffic (messages) you get can vary. You are in a unique (geographical) position to recruit local volunteers which would be great. Bottom Line: We Welcome any help we can get. The thrust of the entire program is Genealogists Helping Genealogists. James A. Streeter <[email protected]> **************************************************** James A.
