It has been my personal experience that many NH and VT birth and marriage records do not exist. This is true of dates through the 1800's. Once you hit 1900 the records get better. My grandfather's birth was not recorded. We knew where he was born---the exact house, and if we could have located a birth record it would have been financially of benefit. Believe me, we searched! I have even re-searched in recent years, but to no avail. My husband's grandmother's birth was recorded as "girl". So were most of her siblings. My grandmother, AMY ELVINA, who was named for both her grandmothers, was horrified to finally find herself recorded as EMMA ELMIRA on the original record. That was 1885, and I guess that someone pronounced her name the good old Vermont way (EMMY for AMY).
