Jan 4, 1798 d. Jan 4, 1868, buried Hunt Cemetery, Tunbridge, VT <rest of message snipped> Hello -- Oddly, in researching the Smith family in Tunbridge today, I ran across some information about an Isaiah Austin who may well be the one you are looking for. Note that I tried to reach the author of this message, but the e-mail address is no longer valid. The message to the Austin list is quoted in its entirety. Here is my Vermont AUSTIN line: Mr. Austin of Tunbridge, Vermont was probably born 1768-perhaps in NH or MA. Married Hannah (maybe Rand or Wallis). Mr. Austin died prior to 1803/04. It is suspected that the unknown Mr. Austin may be related to the Austin families of Townshend and Jamaica, Windham Co., Vermont. Children: David, Benjamin, Olive, Mary, Isaih, & Hannah The Widow Hannah Austin married Joseph Higgens in August 1804. Late summer of 1805 finds the Austin/Higgens family at Marietta, Washington Co., Ohio. Three years later they moved to Bloomfield Twp, Knox Co., Ohio. When the Austin/Higgens removed to Ohio they left young Isaih Austin with the Stephen Smith family of Tunbridge. Isaih never rejoined the Austin family. Stephen Smith was born ca. 1768 in MA and died July 29, 1836 at Tunbridge, VT. His parents were Josiah Smith & Apphier Smith (Apphier's maiden name as Smith). Stephen and his Brother Joseph came to Tunbridge, VT in 1794 from New Durham, NH. Stephen purchased land on May 12, 1794 in Tunbridge and took Comfort Wallis as his bride on August 10, 1794 at Gilman, NH at the Smith meeting house where they were married by Stephen's uncle, the Rev. Isaac Smith. Comfort was born 1771 in MA and died June 4th 1857 at Tunbridge, VT. Her parents are unknown. Two sisters resided at Tunbridge--Olive Wallis Hall and Betsy Wallis Whitney. Because young Isaih was left with the Smith family it is believed that his mother was related to Comfort Wallis. The fact that Isaih's brother, David Austin who is my direct ancestor, has a grandchild named William Wallis Mount supports this theory. Perhaps Hannah maiden name is Rand and she is a sister to Polly Rand the first wife of Joseph Higgens. If so Hannah is a step-mother, which would make it easier for her to leave Isaih with a close relative. As you can see I have a wild imagination, but perhaps my intuition is correct. Do you see any connection? Max ces@primenet.com
