    1. [VTORA] Early Mills Families of Orange County
    2. Charlene
    3. Hi, I'm new to this list and am looking to identify who William Mills' b. May 1800 in Topsham, parents are. I have been going though the early Orange County census records and below are the possible people that could be his parents or related somehow. 1790 Newbury Township: John Mills - 3 over 16, 3 under 16 and 3 females (I believe he was from Chester, NH?) Nathaniel Mills - 1 over 16, 2 under 16 and 2 females (I'm wondering if his father is John Mills above? I believe he married Catherine and I do not know her last name?) 1800 Newbury Township: John Mills is living in Newbury and now a John Jr is also reflected here. John Mills (the elder one) - Males: 3 age 16-26, 1 over age 45; Females: 1 age 16-26, 1 over 45 1800 Topsham Township: William Mills was born in May of this year based upon what his death certificate below states (his death certificate did not state who his parents were). The census only reflects that Nathaniel was living there however, I'm not sure what month this census was taken and maybe this was taken prior to the parents moving here and Williams birth occurred. Nathaniel Mills - Males: 2 age 0-10, 2 age 10-16, 1 age 26-45; Females: 1 age 0-10, 1 age 26-45 1810 Orange County: The 1810 census reflects the following Mills families in Orange County with a 10 year old boy that could be my William Mills. Topsham Twp: Nathaniel Mills above has 2 boys between 0-10 Topsham Twp: David Mills has has 2 boys between 0-10 Orange Twp: Daniel Mills has has 2 boys between 0-10 (I have been told he had a brother named William born in 1767) Randolph Twp: Rueben Mills had one boy between 0-10 (I believe he is the same Rueben Mills who was living in Stanbridge, Canada in 1825 living next door to a William Mills who is probably my William Mills note that his son was born in Stanbridge in 1834 below.) Newbury Twp: John Mills had one boy between 10-16 Bradford Twp: Archibald Mills had 4 boys between 0-10 who according to VT Vital Records did have a son name William who was born in 1802. Bradford Twp: Wm Mills had 4 boys between 0-10 (I believe he married Jenny Glines?) Is someone able to provide information on the Mills above and/or know how they relate to my Mills family below? My Mills Family: WILLIAM1 MILLS was born May 1800 in Topsham, Orange, Vermont (birth data is according to his VT death certificate), and died April 14, 1884 in Andover, Windsor, Vermont. He married ELIZABETH HAWKINS Abt. 1833, daughter of JAMES HAWKINS and ELIZABETH. She was born December 1808 in England (maybe Ireland conflicting info received), and died November 08, 1873 in Andover, Windsor, Vermont. I believe by 1825 William and Elizabeth were living in Stanbridge with one daughter born. I do not know where they met or married. The 1870 Federal Census reflects that Elizabeth Hawkins Mills and their two sons Leonard and Lyman Albert were living in Andover, Windsor Co., Vermont with the HOWE or HOME family. William was not enumerated with them and may have been in the process of moving from Canada. This census reflected that Leonard owned $600 in real estate. The 1880 Federal Census reflects William Mills was living alone in Andover, Windsor Co., Vermont living by himself. He was 80 years old, he was a widow and his occupation was a farmer. It reflected that he could not write English. William's death certificate reflects he was a farmer and a widow. His death certificate reflects he was 83 years and 11 month old at the time of his death. His cemetery marker reflects that he was 86 years old at the time of death. WILLIAM MILLS and ELIZABETH HAWKINS were both buried in Simonsville, Windsor, Vermont2 Children of WILLIAM MILLS and ELIZABETH HAWKINS are: iv. WILLIAM2 MILLS, b. May 22, 1834, Stanbridge, Quebec; d. July 04, 1920, Stowe, Lamoille, Vermont. He emigrated from Canada in 1851, and married Julia Davis of Enosburg on 4/19/1858, the groom's residence was Underhill, Vermont. v. JENNIE MILLS, b. Abt. 1847, Stukley, Shefford Co., Quebec; m. (1) M. J. BROWN, April 02, 1867, Williston, Vermont. These records reflect the bride was living in East Canada; m. (2) ISAAC Foster SMITH, May 01, 1903, Weston, Vermont. vi. LEONARD MILLS, b. 1849, Ely, Shefford Co., Quebec; m. MINNIE WARREN, February 25, 1874, Andover, Windsor, Vermont. vii. LYMAN ABERT MILLS, b. 1852, Ely, Shefford Co., Quebec; m. EMMA T. JOHNSON, July 01, 1874, Andover, Windsor, Vermont. Note: They probably have more children than I'm aware of. 3. Hi Charlene, Remember me. I gave you a bunch of stuff from the manuscript of Betty Post on the Early Mills of Vermont. I'm a direct descendant of Nathaniel Mills and Catherine who last name is PRATT. Yes, Nathaniel is son to a John Mills. If you write me at home, I can share more pages of Betty's. 3. Ken! I think I found your guy, quite by accident really. I have just finished computerizing the second installment of the Randolph Center, Vermont Cemetery, all seventy pages. Going over it and a lot map trying to make head n tails of the lettering & numbering. Well, John Fitts Died Jan 30, 1862 AE 72 ys & 8 ms. Philena Fitts wife of John Fitts Died Dec. 25, 1867, AE 73 yrs. & 4 ms. spelled with an "I" but too close not to be yours, I would say. From Randolph town clerk: Book C Deaths P. 148 John Fitts Died 1 Jan 1862 Age 73 Roxbury VT, Died of Epilepsy, Born Braintree, VT. Gives no parentage, nor do I find anything on Phelena (Philena) Copeland Fitts in Randolph Town Clerk. those two John Fitts though the data does not totally match, betcha they are one & the same. Perhaps someone in Braintree or Roxbury could do some checking? Harriet

    3. Hi. I have that same Mills line in Vermont, I think. Martha Mills, daughter of John Mills & Mary (or Liz) McDuffee married my Johnson Smith and they took off for Canada when he "deserted" after the Rev. War. Sound familiar? I'd be happy to share info - have lots on Johnson & Martha line... 3. Hi Carolyn, YES, that's the same lady. She is dau. to John Mills and Mary McDuffee. It was Martha's brother John jr. who married Elizabeth McDuffee ? I would love to exchange info. I don't have a lot but do know that your Johnson Smith was a Capt. and his brother James Smith m. Martha's sister Betsy. Martha was b. Mar. 15, 1766/67 and d. Feb. 9, 1850 in Chatham, Que. Martha is sister to my Nathaniel MILLS who married Catherine Pratt. Anyway, I do have a possible 11 kids for Martha and Johnson but only a couple of dates. If you want to write me at home, it will be easier to copy and paste and not bother the list. No I am only doing Randolph..... in the coming months "we" as in whoever "we" can corner will be doing Southview, Randolph ( getting the actual information from the stones)., the Pleasant View, Moulton and the Catholic one. E Randolph was written down some time ago, so I suppose in a dry spell, well, a wet spell, will be getting that into the computer. Harriet
