My great grandfather, Irvin Rollins, left Orange County, VT, in 1855 to homestead in Minnesota. He returned briefly in 1859 to marry Ellen Keith of Barre, VT, and bring her to MN. They had 4 children. He and family visited VT in 1872. His wife died in 1891, and he made a trip there from Sept. - Dec. of 1894. This was in his journals which he kept for 40 years -- from 1855 until a few days before his death in 1895. They are now in the MN Historical Society. Irvin's parents were Laban Clark and Nancy (Colby) Rollins. I've copied below the section of his time in Orange County in 1894. He had left MN on Sept. 19, taking the train to Boston. He spends time there, in Portsmouth, NH, and Barre, VT. I've started with Oct. 9, 1894, since that's the day he first mentions going to "Orange". Janet K. Golden Valley, MN ******************************* Irvin Rollins Trip to Massachusetts and Vermont Sept. - October 1894 . . . . October 9, 1894 9th - Went to the village in the morning. Saw Rogers Emerson. Called at Mr. Swaseys. She was Clara Keith, Clinton's oldest girl. Swasey works in the Stowe shops. Her sister Cora lives at Warner in New Hampshire. Her half sister Alice married a Dr. Newton and lives in Drosburgh, VT. Mrs. Swasey said she would write to her father, and she thought he would come down to Barre, as he had talked of coming. Cora's husband's name is Arthur Giffin. He works at manufacturing gloves. In the afternoon Erastus carried me to Orange. I stopped at the Scott Paines. She was Dora Hutchinson, used to live at Uncle Emerson Colby's. Staid about an hour and a half, and then walked to East Orange. Went to Aunt Emily's. Found them quite well. Mary Ann Merrill is here, and Frank Colby came in the evening. Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Thurston were visiting here. She was Huldah Colby. He has one useless arm. It was caught in a belt in a mill down in North Carolina. 10th - Rained nearly all day. Aunt and I went to Henry Colby's before dinner. D.N. Richardson and wife were there. I came back to Aunt Emily's. Henry's folks have two girls, Bernice and Ellen, 12 and 9 years old. This is Mary's and Malinda's birthday. 11th - Rather a wet day. I went into the cemetery a short time. Went to see Aunt Sally Rollins and Selina. Staid to dinner with them. Went up over the hill to the old Dea. Colby place where my Mother was born. Washington Davis lives there now. His wife was Emma Fish. Staid there through a shower, got a drink of water from the old well. Called at Nathan Burroughs place. He did not know me. His wife was gone. Came to Aunt Emily's. 12th - Frank Colby carried me to Waits River. Stopped at the shop where Tim Grop (?), Enoch Gilley, and several others used to live. Frank Fellows now lives there. The shop is now used for a cider mill. Went to the place where Richard Avery used to live. Saw Smith Farnham who lives there now. Went to John Batchelder's. John looks much as his father did when I saw him last. Went from Batchelder's up through the woods to what we used to call the new piece when I lived at home. The land has been in pasture and is grown up to bushes. Followed the old road through the woods where we used to draw hay and grain when I was a boy. Trees have blown across the road, and the bridges or sluice ways have rotted or washed out and young trees have grown up thick on each side. Looks desolate. Went to the north part of the pasture, and to the spring which comes out from under the ledge. Went to the old house. It has not been used for a long while and is rotting down. Boards are nailed across the doors to keep out the cattle. I crawled in under the boards and looked around. There is no glass in the windows. The old chimney is carried away, but the old stone mantle lies there. The floor is rotting out. The cellar wall has partly fallen into the cellar. The doors are gone. It is all in ruins. The shed is still there, where we used to keep the wagon, etc. The old barn is all gone except the stone, and some of the floor timbers. The swill house, hog pen, ash house, water trough are all gone. The orchard is much of it gone or dead, but the young part is quite good, and Mr. Thayer's folks told me that they got nearly 100 bushels of apples there, some of them from the grafted trees. I found one pound sweet (?) and one apple on the good tree, which is partly broken down. I could not find the Topsham Sweet tree, and the Malinda is gone. Also my tree and Odd's. I went out across the old field where I used to mow and hoe and pick stones. The hills and ledges are there and the large stone piles which I helped to make and the stone walls, some parts of which have fell down. The hill on the east which was the reserve field is grown up to bushes. Does not look as though it had been plowed or mowed for 20 years, and I presume it has not for longer than that. I went down across the John Currier farm which is in much the same condition as the old place except the house is a little better. The barns and the sheds are gone. The road down the hill is badly gullied. I went to Mr. Thayer's. They asked me to stop to dinner, which I did and staid until two or half past two and then went to Edson Currier's place. He was gone. One of his boys, Charles, was there, but he looks like a drinking fellow, and I was told that he was paralized, or partly so. I went to the sawmill where I found Angelo Beede. There is quite a lot of hardwood bugs in the yard of which they are going to make bobbins. I walked to Salmon Davis' place, two miles and a half from Waits River. Passed the old Burke place. Folsom Woodman lives there. He was by the road, and I had quite a talk with him, and the women folks wanted me to come into the house. A Mrs. Brigham was visiting there. She had been to LeRoy, Minn., where she has some relatives and she asked about the cyclone. She had heard more about it than I had. 13th - Rains this morning. AM at Mr. Davis. He is threshing. Rained all day, and I did not get away. Mrs. Davis and Alantha Chandler was first married to a Dr. Evans. Her folks lived in Barre. I can remember seeing her father. He was a carpenter, wore glasses. Alantha was acquainted with Ellen and Almira. They have one son living with them. His wife was a Farnham, Dick Farnham's grandchild. 14th - Salmon carried me to Waits River in AM. Went to Angelo Beede's a dn to Edson Currier's and to meeting at 2 o'clock. Staid at Mr. Beede's. He is living with his third wife. She was a Minard, Henry Minard's daughter. Selden Minard was her uncle. 15th - The ground is frostily white with snow this morning. Squalls, and is quite windy and cold, but the ground is not frozen. I wrote a few lines to Flora. Went to Mr. Filbricks. Saw her. She was Louella Dickerman. Mr. F. was gone to Barre. I met him but did not know him. Their youngest son lives at home. He is man grown. Called at the old Daniel Miles place. Mrs. J. Felch and her son live there. I went into the cemetery. Saw the names of a great many with whom I used to be acquainted, among them Mr. Dunbar, Mr. James Richardson and James Richardson, Jr., Wilson Lang, Emeline Graves, Mrs. Edson Currier, Ursula Dunbar, Elbridge Dunbar, Mr & Mrs. Daniel Miles, and many others. Went to the old Aaron Bullard place. Henry Richardson lives there, the old cider mill stands there the same as when I was a boy, but is not used for a cider mill. Went to Wm. Rodgers place. Edmund Eastman married Martha Rodgers and lives there. Edmund's folks have one daughter Anna. She married George Wright and they are now living with her parents. Mr. Rogers is 85 years old, is quite smart, and has been talking about old times and the old people who used to live here. Edmund has a feed-mill and some polishing shops at East Barre. Is in company with Fred Sargeant. Edmund owns half of the Opera House and half of two cottage houses. 16th - Cloudy, froze some last night. I went to call on Almira Currier. She looks much as she used to. Her hair is white but she has false hair. Went to Merill Miles. Was there to dinner. She was Satira Bradford. She looks as she used to. Looks like Leanora more than I thought she did. Merrill did not know me. He has changed more than she has. Went into Geo. Church store. He did not know me. He was in Elgin two or three years, 25 years ago. Saw Andrew Thurston and Mrs. Jackson. She was Caroline King. Called at Mr. Rogers again and went to East Orange. Called at Lewis Hutchinson's. Saw Jerry H and Lydia. She is married, but I do not remember her husband's name. Went to the P.O. office and to Henry Colby's. Rained some by turns all day. 17th - Squally and wet. I went to Ward and John Hutchinson's. Was at John's to dinner. He lives on the place where his father lived, the Priest Currier place. Ward lives on the Dan Munre place. Called at Mahlon Hamilton's and Orrin Eastman's, went to Aunt Emily's. Hiram Thurston and his wife were there. 18th - Frank Colby carried me to Barre. We called to see Tom Hutchinson, Worthen Moore and Daniel Sanborn, and was at Chester Dickey's to dinner. Chester has changed more than many, and more than his father (Elder H.F. Dickey) has. Met Mrs. Waterman on the road but did not know for sure that it was her, and Frank said it was not, but I called at the house where she lives and found that it was her. Saw Flora her daughter. Went to Erastus, and found two letters from home, one from Frank and one from Mary, written the 7th and 12th of Oct. We played dominoes and backgammon in eve. 19th - Wrote to Mary, or to the children and directed to Mary. Went to the village, called at Chas. Currier's. He was not at home. Saw Mrs. Currier. She was Celinda Dickey. Went to Newcomb. Ketchum was there to dinner, and until 4 o'clock, called at Mr. Allen Woods. Saw Mrs. Aaron Buroughs. She was Elisa Cook. She has been at Mr. Woods for some time. Was there when Ellen was here. Mr. Wood is failing. He has Bright's disease. They do not expect him to live long. Came to Erastus. 20th - I went to Chas. Wheaton's. He was gone. I went to Chas. Beede's. He was gone. I went to Mr. Winch's. Found him at home. His wife was Malinda Bradford. They have two children, a girl and a boy, both at home. I think she looks more like her mother than the other girls. Went to Elmer Tafft's. Saw Chas. Beede there. In pm went to the village with Erastus. Called to see Wm. Sanborn and Mrs. Swasey (Clara K). She has not heard from her father. Thinks he will not come here now. I went into the cemetery about an hour. Went to the graves of Ellen's parents and Flora, Ida, and Almira Trow. Dennison & Mary Taft Batchelder, Grandfather & Grandmother Bradford, Mary & Elvira Bradford, Rodney Bradford and wives and Ira, Ambrose Bradford and Harriet his wife, and many other whom I know or of whom I had heard.
Thanks ever so much for this information. My ggg mother Elvira (Adams) Dean was half sister to Harriet Hall who married Amasa Flint. Lots of Flints migrated to Brainerd and then around VT from Connecticut. I didn't get into it too deep since I didn't have a direct relation. Look on Ancestry and GenForum. There was a book published. Confusion abounds about the marriage of Nettie Carey daughter of Daniel Carey of Colrain, Mass. Depending on the source of information we have Nettie Carey married to possibly more than one person - the confusion is which name should her husband be listed under or are they two separate Nettie Carey's daughters of two different Daniel Carey's both of Colrain, Mass. Can anyone help Peter Blood regarding this issues? 1st Nettie Carey follows (see #2): FIRST GENERATION 1. Daniel CAREY. He was married to Lydia. Daniel CAREY and Lydia had the following children: +2 i. Nettie CAREY (born in 1867). SECOND GENERATION 2. Nettie CAREY (Daniel-1) was born in 1867 in Colrain, Franklin, Massachusetts. In various records J.H. marries Nettie BORRIS, Nettie CARPENTER, Nettie BURROUGHS or Nettie CAREY. Daughter Gertrude says her mother was Nettie CAREY in one record and Nettie BURROUGHS in another. Review file for marriage of Nettie Carey daughter of Daniel Carey and Lydia Carpenter in which Nettie Carey is listed as married to her uncle Josiah (John) H. Carey son of Zina Carey and Cynthia Almira Plumb. Additional research required on these two files. She was married to John Heenan CAREY on 13 May 1885 in Halifax, Windham, Vermont. Source: Peter Blood. I have a copy of a 1983 letter obtained from a genealogical society from Marion Hodgdon to Beatrice Lange. In the letter, she states, "John Henon Carey born 5/15/1860 married Nettie Carey, she were his niece, she was Dan CAREY's daughter..." According to the marriage certificate application of "J.H. Carey," he married "Nettie Carey" on 13 of May 1885 in Halifax, Windham, VT. Nettie is 18, born in Colrain, and her parents are listed as "Daniel Carey" and "Lydia." J.H. is 25, born in Colrain, and his father and mother [pretty illegible] are something like "Gince Carey" and "Almini Carey," respectively. John Heenan CAREY was born on 5 May 1860 in Colrain, Franklin, Massachusetts. He died in Jul 1953 in Townshend, Windham, Vermont. July 1953 - South Newfane, Vermont. John H. Toni, Yes I have been researching Bartlett's in orange county for some time. My family appears to have settled in Newbury prior to 1795 and lived there thru about 1870. The family did not flourish in Vermont. My line a John E. Bartlett moved to Boston and never returned to live in Vermont. Solomon Bartlett shows up in Newbury records about 1793 with the birth of a daughter Polly. He had a son Hosea born 1795. Hosea,s family is well documented in most records of Newbury and Orange County. I do not know Solomon origins or where he died. It is conjectured that he had more children but the records are not very conclusive. I have on permanent loan at the family history center I work in the vital records which cover the Bartlett's all of Orange county. I will review them for your Samuel and his offspring. I probably will not do this till December 7 when I am scheduled to work there. I stay subscribed hoping one day someone will be hunting for my folks thru a different line. -----Original Message----- From: tfeeney [mailto:tfeeney@xpressamerica.net] Sent: Monday, November 25, 2002 9:37 AM To: VTORANGE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [VTORA] Mills of Newbury, VT. To All Searching Vermont for Martins: I have pictures of a lot of Martins from the Randolph Cemeteries as well as Abigail's from Gilead Cemetery in Bethel. If you want me to email copies, PLEASE email me privately not to the list. chargene@eagle.ptialaska.net Please tell me the GIVEN names of the Martins you want copies of. I have not had a chance to check my files on Martin but I do have the "Two Vermont Hollows" which is a wonderful history and life in Bethel/Rochester back then. I did not get much from Rochester when there a half day in April. I was toward the end of my month long trip and I was ALMOST burned on looking a records and cemeteries. It was also raining hard - could juggle a digital camera and my umbrella both :-) I will this weekend look at my files and try to answer the messages I have seen on this list. I will post also a list of any certificates I have. I am off from school until Thursday 12/4 so get your requests in soon or you will have to wait until later in December. Sincerely, Charlotte M. Davis Fairbanks, Alaska P. S. I am currently working full time and getting my masters degree online. I answer requests every six weeks until mid 2004. I answer requests by date received and there may be additional delays depending on the number and types of requests. chargene@eagle.ptialaska.net Host for Bethel, Vermont http://www.rootsweb.com/~vtcbethe/

I tie him to another Solomon in Stockbridge (1860 census) who may have been an uncle or his father, also through old letters handed down, I tie him to a James Cross in Morristown, an Amasa Cross in Braintree, a Leonard Cross, and Joshua Cross in Hardwick. Through a process of elimination, I have isolated Isaac Cross in Orange County (1820-1840 census) as the most likely ancestor and possibly the father. > > -----Original Message----- > From: pam prine [mailto:pprine@frontiernet.net] > Sent: Tuesday, November 26, 2002 7:08 PM > To: VTORANGE-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [VTORA] Mills of Newbury, VT. > > > I don't have a Cross name from the book, but I researching Cross in Vermont. > My ancestor, Thomas B.
