    1. [VTORA] Randolph, Braintree cemetery photos
    2. Dagner, Deidre (E-mail 2)
    3. Hi listers. I have some very nice cemetery photos from my trip to Vermont. I know there are some web sites that put up headstone pictures so if anyone wants copies, please email me. The Randolph ones are of the new Burridge plot in the Pleasantview cemetery in Randolph. (they just opened a small new section where plots are available and we purchased 6) I have a few of what I think is the Randolph Center cemetery, its located on the opposite side of the road from Pleasantview, about a mile closer to the town of Randolph. Then I have some photos of the very old family plot on Thayer Brook Road in Braintree which contains Back, Neff, Burridge and Riford graves. Just a few, there are only about a dozen stones there. 3. Marriane According to the 1800 Census for Bradford, VT, there were two SWEAT families, headed by Paul and Silas Sweat. Paul and his wife were under the age of 26, with three sons under age 10. In Silas' family there were two males and one female over age 45, one female and two males between ages of 16-26, and one male under age 10. There are no Sweat/Sweet families in Bradford for the 1790 Census. Sorry, I don't have the 1820 Census. A Silas Sweet died at Bradford, VT on 23 Nov 1822, age 77. Evidently another Silas Sweet was buried in 1882, according to the Bradford, VT Burials, by Arthur L Hyde. You can contact the Bradford, Vermont Clerk's office by writing to P.O. Box 339, Bradford, VT 05033 or calling 802-222-4727., M-F 8:30am-4:30pm. Their vital records are all well indexed. This is all I could find in my personal, home library. Hope it helps somehow. 1. [VTORA] ELDER & MARTIN Family Bible
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old bible dated 1857 which originally belonged to the ELDER Family of Illinois. The bible contains the following: Marriage Records: · Charles S. ELDER Sr. and Mary E. MARTIN, married 2 Sept 1856, by the Rev. E. P. INGERSOLL Birth Records: · Charles Stuart ELDER Sr., b. 7 May 1835 · Mary Elvira MARTIN, b. 14 Sept 1835 · Lora Martin ELDER, b. 10 Aug 1857 · Henry Rossiter ELDER, b. 26 July 1858 · Josephine ELDER, b. 17 July 1859 · Edgar Burnham ELDER, b. 2 Feb 1861 · Lucy ELDER, b. 20 Oct 1863 · William Augustus ELDER, b. 13 Mar 1865 · Lottie ELDER, b. 3 Feb 1869 · Grace ELDER, b. 23 Jan 1870 · Eloise V. ELDER, b. 7 Feb 1873 · Charles Stuart ELDER Jr., b. 17 Mar 1876 Death Records: · Henry Rossiter ELDER, d. 6 Jan 1860 · Lucy ELDER, d. 22 Nov 1865 · William Augustus ELDER, d. 19 Feb 1867 · Eloise V. ELDER, d. 13 Sept 1873 · Charles Stuart ELDER Jr., d. 30 May 1886 · Mary Elvira ELDER, d. 17 July 1889 · Charles Stuart ELDER Sr., 12 Apr 1911 Additional Items: · Funeral Notice for Mrs. Ruth L. MARTIN d. 26 Feb 1866 at Middleport, IL, age 62 years and 7 months, the widow of the late Colonel Porter MARTIN of Martinton, son – James P. MARTIN of Middleport, son-in-law – Mr. STEARNS of Martinton, previously lived in Williamstown, VT · Dried field flowers · Library Book card referencing a 1750 cookbook · Funeral Notice for Mr. Henry FERRE, 24 Jan 1855 · Handwritten poem “Heaven help the Sons of Liberty” Based on limited research I believe that Charles Stuart ELDER was born in Waterloo, New York to parents Augustus ELDER and Lydia STUART. He and Mary Elvira MARTIN were married in Bloomington, Ohio and were living in Lexington, IL during the 1880 census with 5 of their children and Mary's Mother Catharine A. MARTIN. Charles was living at Chenoa, IL when he died in 1911. It appears that the older children were probably born at Bloomington, IL and the younger kids at Chenoa, IL. Lora Martin ELDER married Charles Fordyce CHURCHILL on 19 Oct 1876 and appears in the 1880 census living in Chenoa, IL with her husband and 2 year old daughter Lena L. CHURCHILL. Grace ELDER married Harry Carlton THOMPSON on 31 Oct 1894 at Chenoa, IL and d. 15 Nov 1953 in Wichita, Kansas. Not sure how Ruth & Porter MARTIN mentioned in the funeral notice are related to Mary E. MARTIN (possibly and Aunt & Uncle), however, I find Porter MARTIN b. 14 Feb 1799 at Williamstown, Vermont the son of James MARTIN and Martha COBURN, married to Ruth A. LADD on 14 Apr 1828. Porter MARTIN died 27 Apr 1865. Ruth A. LADD was b. in 1802 in Tunbridge, VT to parents Anson LADD and Ruth MOULTON. The bible is in poor physical condition, however, I'm hoping to locate someone from the family so that this wonderful old treasure can be returned to family. If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

    1. [VTORA] Mathews, Godfrey, Medling
    2. Hello fellow Rooters, I am seeking information on my grandmother, Nettie Godfrey, and her daughter, Lizzie Mathews. I found Nettie in the 1870 Census in Thetford as a Servant at age 15, Page 11 line 25. About 1875 a child was born to Nettie; Lizzie Jane Mathews. It is not known where she was born, possibly Thetford. Or if the Englishman who fathered her was ever married to Nettie. **Maybe a marriage record in Thetford for Nettie and a Mathews. Lizzie is shown in the 1880 Orange Co. Ely, as a Step daughter to John Medling now married to Nettie Godfrey, with 2 sons the eldest being born in 1876 (Ely). I am hoping someone may know how I find if they (John and Nettie) married in Thetford Vt. My second hope is that someone may be able to find a death date for Nettie or maybe divorce papers for the couple, as by 1883 John Medling is married and living in Huntingdon Co. Pa. and has the 2 sons with him that were born in Vt. There is no further mention as to where or what happened to Lizzie Jane -- but family has a picture of Lizzie older that age 5 so she must have stayed in the Vermont area, possibly with family if Nettie actually died. Any suggestions would be most apprecitive, or someone there to assist in a physical search... Many thanks, Kim WIlliams Portland, Oregon

    1. [VTORA] BRIEF DESCP OF RANDOLPH N CONFUSION
    2. Harriet M Chase
    3. There are many sources for the history of Randolph. However, I have found Harry Cooley's "Randolph, Vermont Historical Sketches", 1979; commissioned by the town of Randolph to be the most simplistic and straight forward. Randolph begins as a town in 1781, when Vermont was an independent republic; granted to Aaron Storrs & Company petitioning from Dresden, (now know as Hanover) New Hampshire. The tract is described as being northwest of Tunbridge and Bethel about six miles square. Experience Davis five years previous established "squatter's rights" to 1500 acres near East Bethel and South Randolph. This area was South Randolph, but also known as "Davis Gore". There also was an area in South Randolph, known as "Painesville", settled by Samuel Paine. The first meeting house was at Randolph Center, then known as Randolph. East Randolph was considered the "City", while "West Randolph" but a budding area. Some folks of the Center referred to it as "Slab City" because of the many saw mills. With the coming of the railroad to West Randolph, it became the main commercial area and about 1900, the US Post Office named it Randolph. Another area which might raise some confusion is that of "Farwell's Village" which was in North Randolph. All vital records should be in the town office in the village. However, even to this day original documents are coming out of the "woodwork" from some of the very early houses built 1790-early 1800. Record keeping began on "Day One", some are very easy to search in the Town Clerk's Office. Others, elusive, viz. one unique and un-indexed book called "Liber Primus", misc. records of Randolph appears to have been entered at a much later date then the events. Individual families are bunched together, with B, M & D. It is also in this book that the description of the lay out of roads and documentation of individuals declaring allegiance to their church of their choice to avoid supporting the main one. Randolph Village is bordered by Bethel, Windsor County on the South and Braintree to the North. To the north of Randolph Center is Brookfield; South E Bethel; East, E Randolph and West; Randolph. To the north of North Randolph is Williamstown. ________ Harriet Chase

    1. [VTORA] ELSIS OSGOOD GRAND DAUGHT OF DR. GEORGE DAVENPORT
    2. Harriet M Chase
    3. OSGOOD. M. ELSIE OBIT Herald Randolph a weekly local paper: ourherald.com Granddaughter of Dr. George Davenport, E Randolph, VT. Does not give date of printing, but figure the Thursday after the death. Randolph (Vermont, Orange County) M. Elsie Osgood, 97, died March 20, 1992, at the Mayo Nursing Home in Northfield, where she resided since 1985. She was born in Randolph March 9, 1895, the daughter of Arthur G. and Annie (Davenport) Osgood. She graduated from Randolph High School. Attended Skidmore College, and taught at elementary schools in Randolph from 1915-1918. She later received her bachelor's degree and master's degree from the University of California at Berkeley. She taught botany in New Jersey during the 1930's. From 1941-1952 she was head of the science department at Lydon State Teacher's College (Vermont). She maintained her ties to Randolph, where her father was a partner in the Sargent, Osgood and Roundy Foundry. She summered at her home in Braintree Hill until 1975, when she moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, to live with her sister Cora Davenport Osgood [Sister Theodora]. She returned to Vermont in 1984 following sister's death. She was a member of St. Jon's Episcopal Church. She leaves a cousin, Mildred Hunt of Southbury, Conn. She was predeceased by a cousins, Clara Riford of Randolph. Funeral services will be held March 27, at St. Jon's Episcopal Church at 10:30 a.m., with Rev. Timothy Eberhart officiating. Burial will be in the South View Cemetery, Randolph. Arrangements are under the care of the Day Funeral Home. This info helps to solve some mysteries: We, as in the Randolph Historical Society have received boxes of pictures and letters, donated by Elsie Osgood. Pictures of her mother, Annie Davenport and uncle Pearl Davenport were in a Riford file, E, S Randolph & Braintree, Vermont family. Note the relationship in Elsie's obit. More questions: was her sister, Cora, a Catholic or Episcopalian nun? How does one trace a nun who has taken upon a "saint's" name. Did she go to retire where her gUncle Frank Davenport may have ended? In another article, 1927, on Thomas Davenport the inventor, of Williamstown, Vermont, there is reference to Rt. Rev. George W. Davenport, D. D. , Bishop of Maryland, grandson of Thomas and Rev. Walter R. Davenport, D. D. of Montpelier, Vermont. Were they Catholic or Episcopalian? The wonder and mysteries of research continues! Harriet M. Chase Randolph, Vermont. With a claim to Davenport connections by my gggrandfather, George J. Chase who married Sarah Davenport, August 28, 1837, Grande Isle, Vermont and died Essex Jct., Vermont 1906. ///////

    3. Carla: You are correct inyour assumption that the parent of George Webster Bliss, b. Oct. 17, 1811 is the son of Ellis Bliss and Mary Worthen. McKeen's "History of Bradford" has a pretty good write-up of this family. Under George (no middle name given) is this: 2. George [Bliss], born Oct. 17, 1811. He studied for the medical profession with Dr. John Poole, of Bradford, and became establishedin business in Ohio, where he married, and at this date [1853] has two sons, Newton and Edmund, and two daughters, Priscilla and Lovie Jane. 3. Paul, I'm so very sorry not to have emailed you sooner. I've just now sat down to begin looking through all of my genealogy emails. Pike County, Ohio has book of biographys. George Webster is listed. No, I haven't tried to get birth infomation from VT. I don't think I would have success due to the early date. According to the biography, George Webster was born 17 Oct 1811 in Bradford, VT to Ellis and Mary Bliss. I have reasons to believe the Mary's maiden name is Worthem. I have tried looking at census information, but have found limited information. I know that there was an Ellis Bliss living in Orange county, VT in 1790. There were 4 males, 16 or older, 1 male younger than 16, and 4 females above age 16. The obit for George W. Bliss mentioned nothing about his parents. The next time I get to go to Pike County, I'm going to see if I can find any other death information on him, to see if that might list parents. I do believe the biography is correct. Item No. 1 for Review: Genealogy of the Bliss Family in America, Volume I, Compiled by Aaron Tyler Bliss, Published by the Author, 1982, Midland, Michigan. p. 145. Ellis Bliss son of Ellis Bliss and Tamar Dewey of Hebron. He removed in 1781 from Hebron to Vermont with his brothers, John and David, and his sister, Lydia. He was a Sergeant in 1779 in the Revolutionary War, and afterwards a Lieutenant. During his nine months of service, he was stationed at New London, Connecticut and at White Plains, New York. The follow is a copy of a permit given him to go to his home in Hebron: "New London, Sept. 7, 1779. Ellis Bliss, a Sergeant in my regiment, hath liberty to go to Hebron, and to return in four days. Per me, L. Wells, Lt. Col., Command't." Mr. Bliss was married to Abigail Taylor of Hebron. She was born April 6, 1757, and died February 13, 1799. Issue: name of 8 children listed. The father was afterwards married to Thankful Webster of Hebron, who died January 4, 1841. He died August 22, 1829. Further issue: a dau., stillborn Oct. 30, 1800. No issue, but Bliss had children by a former wife. Her second husband, West, died, in 1830; and she probably died in 1841. The end. Question: Have you located vital records for Bradford, Vt. that documents an additional child (George Webster Bliss)? Note that I tried to reach the author of this message, but the e-mail address is no longer valid. The message to the Austin list is quoted in its entirety. Here is my Vermont AUSTIN line: Mr. Austin of Tunbridge, Vermont was probably born 1768-perhaps in NH or MA. Married Hannah (maybe Rand or Wallis). Mr. Austin died prior to 1803/04. It is suspected that the unknown Mr. Austin may be related to the Austin families of Townshend and Jamaica, Windham Co., Vermont. Children: David, Benjamin, Olive, Mary, Isaih, & Hannah The Widow Hannah Austin married Joseph Higgens in August 1804. Late summer of 1805 finds the Austin/Higgens family at Marietta, Washington Co., Ohio. Three years later they moved to Bloomfield Twp, Knox Co., Ohio. When the Austin/Higgens removed to Ohio they left young Isaih Austin with the Stephen Smith family of Tunbridge. Isaih never rejoined the Austin family. Stephen Smith was born ca. 1768 in MA and died July 29, 1836 at Tunbridge, VT. His parents were Josiah Smith & Apphier Smith (Apphier's maiden name as Smith). Stephen and his Brother Joseph came to Tunbridge, VT in 1794 from New Durham, NH. Stephen purchased land on May 12, 1794 in Tunbridge and took Comfort Wallis as his bride on August 10, 1794 at Gilman, NH at the Smith meeting house where they were married by Stephen's uncle, the Rev. Isaac Smith. Comfort was born 1771 in MA and died June 4th 1857 at Tunbridge, VT. Her parents are unknown. Two sisters resided at Tunbridge--Olive Wallis Hall and Betsy Wallis Whitney. Because young Isaih was left with the Smith family it is believed that his mother was related to Comfort Wallis. The fact that Isaih's brother, David Austin who is my direct ancestor, has a grandchild named William Wallis Mount supports this theory. Perhaps Hannah maiden name is Rand and she is a sister to Polly Rand the first wife of Joseph Higgens. If so Hannah is a step-mother, which would make it easier for her to leave Isaih with a close relative. As you can see I have a wild imagination, but perhaps my intuition is correct. Do you see any connection? Max ces@primenet.com

    1. [VTORA] Hannah PETTIE m. Nathan GOODWIN - died Tunbridge 1842
    2. Alger and Walcott Family
    3. Nathan and Hannah (PETTIE) Goodwin presumably married in NH before 1781, later settling in Tunbridge, VT. Nathan was born in Hampstead, NH in 1750. There do not seem to be any PETTIEs (or variations) in Hampstead, at least not at the time of the 1790 census. Nathan and Hannah had 14 children. The first 6 were probably born in NH - -the rest, starting in 1791, in Tunbridge. Hannah died in Tunbridge in 1842; Nathan died there in 1832. Does anyone know who Hannah’s parents were?
