    1. [VTORANGE-L] Browns in New England
    2. Hello everybody. I'm hoping to find some one with perhaps a family connection that may be of some help to me. I'm looking for a Silas Brown who may have come from Vermont. He was married but I cannot read his wife's name. They had a son named Heman born1795 in New Hampshire. Heman married Mary Myers and they had two sons named Silas H. born 1826 and Hiram B. born in1837. They were found in the 1850 census in Rensslear County New York. I'm really at a stand still here and just do not know where to go for more information. If there is anybody who could supply any information on my family I would really appreciate it. Thank you. I hope to hear from someone soon. Linda

Here's the rest of the info on Isaac in the book: History of Corinth, VT. Mary Holland has some for $15. Isaac Heath m. Mehitable Merrill. Son, Cyrus and two daughters, Mary Loverne and Louisa. Cyrus m. Mary Clement Hutchingson of Turnbridge Louisa m. Hiram Aikens of Barnard Mary Loverne m. Lyman Hiram Collins. When they m. her father, Isaac Heath, gave her a farm and good dowry. This farm later known as the Eli Kezer place at Corinth Corner. After her husband's death, Mehitable went to live with her son in Libertyville, Ill. She had never learned to read and did so after she was 80 years old. If your Isaac died in Corinth, you can go to Chelsea to find probate records. If that doesn't seem to fit with what you know, there may be two Isaac Heaths, and yours, if transient in Corinth, not included in the book. If they moved back and forth across the Connecticut (Corinth isn't on the Connecticut but a bit west) you might also want to go to the vital records/genealogy in Concord NH. NH town clerks usually won't let you in; they don't have to, and they're overworked. They sent everything to the records place in Concord, so there is your best bet. There is also a huge index in the State library in Concord with directions to every person mentioned in any town record. That can be very useful. Also the historical library in Concord, which is next-door to the state library is very useful. The man who runs the place was wonderful to me in my search. The historical library in Montpelier also has a lot of information. But ask about the Nye index. I think that's in Middlesex. It's like the one in Concord, only for Vt. A good place to start is in Boston at the New England Historical and Genealogical Society off Copley Square. You can stay out of town and ride in on the train or the mass transit. Safe and easy, Get off at Copley at the Boston Library and walk a couple of blocks. Check their website for more info. I'll check what else I have and let you know if anything meshes which what you've told me about your family. Thanks for the offer of Virginia info. I may take you up on it. But my mother's family are LFV's--last families of Virginia, so there's not much info about them. Do you live anywhere near Norfolk or Virginia Beach? If so, I may ask for some help. A great aunt died in Va Beach, and there may be some probate records you could get for me. Thanks. Francha PS I'm totally jealous that you're heading to NE. Wish I were!

    2. In a message dated 98-08-01 21:47:07 EDT, you write: << There are also Charles Heath m Abigail Carpenter Harry Heath m. Dorothy Hoyt Isaac Heath m. Mehitable Merrill Deacon Joseph Heath m. Leah Norris Lewis Heath m. Nettie Avery (My family married into the Avery clan. We are Wilsons) >> Francha, thank you so much for sharing your experiences/expertise. We've not visited a town clerk yet, so needed that bit of information. We will very definitely visit Mary Holland. My father is 90 years old and will enjoy the visit, too. Of the above HEATHs, I believe Isaac Heath is the father of my David Heath, who is the father of Phila Delpha Heath, who married Francis CARR in Mass., then had her children in Haverhill, Grafton Co., NH. These beliefs are based on a film I rented thru the FHC on East Corinth. It listed David and Isaac Heath's deaths, but listed Phila as daughter of David and I believe there was a David Jr. These are the only names I have so far, and other than David Sr., Jr., and Phila, I don't know how the others fit...Isaac was an informed (but perhaps flawed) guess. I wonder if the Heaths moved back and forth over the Conn. River, perhaps marrying in either NH or VT? It should be a profitable trip and thanks again for your information. If you have anything on David and Isaac and Phila, I'd love to know so we don't go into Orange County completely ignorant. Phila died in Constantia, Oswego NY some years after she married Francis Carr and had 7 children. I'm in VA with scads of colonial stuff. Can I help you? Shirley

    1. Re: [VTORANGE-L] HEATH, in East Corinth
    2. Shirley. I recently went to Corinth to look for my family too. I have some information about Heaths for you. When you get to Vt, get a good map, because unless you do, you won't find some of the small places. The town hall is in Cookeville, which is not far from Corinth Center. I think it is open MT-TF and closed Wed. East Corinth has a post office and a nice place for breakfast and a general store and a library. There is a book about Corinth. There are three or four cemeteries. The postmasters in Cookeville and in E. Corinth were very helpful. Call Mary Holland; the postmasters will tell you how. She is the historian of the area and lives just across from the PO in E Corinth. She has lists of everyone buried in every cemetery. She is quite old and seemed to enjoy our company. She also has the book the historical society wrote about Corinth. Town hall lady is Peggy, I think. She was very nice to us. She will let you look through all the old stuff, but I'd start with Mary Holland and cemetery and book info first to localize your research. You can also find the same information in Middlesex, not far from Montpelier, which has all the info on microfilm. They are open everyday 8-4 or 9-4. There is a nice historical library in Montpelier near the capitol, too. Town halls charge $2 per hour for research. There are two pages of Heaths in the book, starting with Abel Heath who m 1st Priscilla. Ch: James 1792-1804; Sarah 1793; Lydia 1795; Abel 1806; John 1802; Samuel 1804; James 1806; Polly 1808. Abial Heath, b. Conn. m there and had a family. When his wife died he came to Corinth, m. Candace Metcalf. They lived on Taplin Hill. Ch: Richard; Daniel 1813 d. in Charleston, NH; David Metcalf; There are also Charles Heath m Abigail Carpenter Harry Heath m. Dorothy Hoyt Isaac Heath m. Mehitable Merrill Deacon Joseph Heath m. Leah Norris Lewis Heath m. Nettie Avery (My family married into the Avery clan. We are Wilsons) Lorenzo Heath m. Emma Woodcock. If any of this sounds up you alley, let me know and I'll fill in the details. Or if you want to talk, --the typing is getting to me!--I'll send my phone number. Francha/Denver

    1. [VTORANGE-L] HEATH, in East Corinth
    2. I'll be visiting East Corinth Twp. later this month and would like to know where would be the place to start research. I'll have just one day so would like to optimize my time. Are there any town halls close by and would they have information on the late 1700's, early 1800's? What about a county courthouse? Where would that be found? An historical society? Has cemetery information been abstracted? David Heath, son of Isaac Heath, had a daughter Phila Delpha Heath who married in Lowell, Mass. Francis CARR, 1829. They had children born in Haverhill, Grafton Co., NH, which I understand is directly across the Conn. River from East Corinth Twp. I have most of their descendants (one child, the eldest still unnamed and unknown) after they moved to Constantia, Oswego Co., NY. But I would like to gather more information on the HEATHs of East Corinth Twp, Orange Co., VT. Thank you for any help you may give me. Shirley
