    3. Debbie, Thank you so very much, you're wonderful. My grandfather, William C. Wright, was born in New York, NY and settled in MA as a young man. He had family throughout New England. His first wife died while they were living in Reading, MA, He eventually married the woman that would become my grandmother. The Navy needed him in D.C because of World War II, he was 55. I've not had any hints of help, and you come along. Praise the Lord! I'll look for the book. I am waiting and waiting for Soc. Sec. to send me his application so I can get his parents' names. Thanks again, Ruth of Maryland in the USA -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Wednesday, October 21, 1998 9:54 PM Subject: Re: [VTORANGE-L] WRIGHT, William C. >Ruth, > >I don't know if I can help, I have Wrights, but I have not researched them >yet, mine are also from VT and before that Mass. I was told that the ones I am searching for are from Northfield, Mass, which is a border town of VT. There is a book on the History of Northfield, Mass, which has the Wrights genealogy in it. I have not searched for this yet, I am working on other lines at the moment, but I was given this info and thought maybe it could help you. I wish I could offer more. Debby

    2. Sue, Thanks for your suggestions. I have access to all the VT vitals (the same one's used in Montpelier) Yes, I have even been there. Recently I joined the VT gen. society. My Harvey was Harvey CASE. I am going to try some Inter- lib. loan, for some town histories next, this is where I found info in Mass, who knows. Debby

    3. Another idea. There are Harveys in Peacham, VT. Have you checked the old books like the People of Peacham, and History of Ryegate? There's a Harvey's lake up there, too. 3. HI. I would see what I found first, and maybe charge $2 plus copying. I mostly have fun. Never charge if I don't find anything. You could try the Nye index in Montpelier, archives of every legal document from the early years. Not as much genealogical as information. I have found things like several great grandparents who signed temperance petititons and anti-thruway petitions, etc. Also, for NOrthfield info, you might try the Berlin Historical society. email Mr. Norbert Rhinerson the President at <[email protected]> Tell him the family might be in Berlin (next to Northfield and overlapped in the old days. Also, there is the Vermont Historical Society in Montpelier. They have the most genealogical records of anyone in the state. They are on the web (don't have the URL handy). Good luck!! You are correct about going to the town clerk's office. That was the only way we traced another ggg grandmother's maiden name. I had written to the town clerk, asking for a copy of the marriage record. I gave them the groom's full name and the date of marriage. I told them I needed to know the bride's name. I sent $5.00, and received back only the information, "can't read the name". Personally, I don't believe that they even looked. My uncle went their personally, read the record with no trouble. He had no pre-conceived idea as to the name. I find that some town clerks are wonderful, but others seem to resent being bothered, even when you pay. Guess they are human, like the rest of us. I'm not sure how a warranty deed would help. Could you explain? I did use the will and probate dates of a gg aunt to determine the approximate birth of a g grandfather, and the death dates of his grandparents.

    2. In my experience, I found the Records in Vermont to be pretty bad. One town clerk told me that most of there records were kept in family bibles. So far, I have not had a problem with the New Hampshire records. Have you tried going to the libraries in each town? The annual reports do have some vital stats in them. Here they start about 1887. I don't know if this helps. Debby

    3. It has been my personal experience that many NH and VT birth and marriage records do not exist. This is true of dates through the 1800's. Once you hit 1900 the records get better. My grandfather's birth was not recorded. We knew where he was born---the exact house, and if we could have located a birth record it would have been financially of benefit. Believe me, we searched! I have even re-searched in recent years, but to no avail. My husband's grandmother's birth was recorded as "girl". So were most of her siblings. My grandmother, AMY ELVINA, who was named for both her grandmothers, was horrified to finally find herself recorded as EMMA ELMIRA on the original record. That was 1885, and I guess that someone pronounced her name the good old Vermont way (EMMY for AMY).
