    1. [VTORANGE] Hadley in Wellsburgh Town, Essex Co, NY in 1790-1810
    2. Gregg Kinney
    3. I have not posted for a while.... I am looking for information on the ancestors/siblings of Smith Hadley, who was born on 23 AUG 1765 [Conflicting records indicate birth dates of 15 AUG 1764 and 14 AUG 1765.] I don't have proof, but suspect Smith Hadley was a son of either Samuel Hadley (b. 23 Sep 1746 Amesbury, Essex Co, MA) & Judith Flanders or Parrott Hadley (b. 26 Jan 1743 Amesbury, Essex Co, MA). Samuel (1746) & Parrott (1743) were first cousins and grandsons of Samuel Hadley and Dorothy Colby, natives and residents of Amesbury & Rowley, Essex Co, MA. In 1751, Samuel's (1746) parents, Samuel Hadley & Judith Flanders, moved from Amesbury, Essex Co, MA to Hampstead, Rockingham Co, NH. Wells' history of Newbury, VT states, that just before the Revolutionary war broke out, Samuel Hadley (1746) and Samuel Eaton settled on a farm where Col. John Smith and his descendants owned for more than a century. The Alice M. Hadley manuscript shows that the farm where Samuel Hadley (1746) & Samuel Eaton lived passed to Kincaid, then Smith and finally Tylers, all connections. Samuel (1746) was probably the person listed in the 1790 census in Newbury, Orange Co, VT. In 1761, Parrott's (1743) parents, Parrott Hadley and Mary Heath, moved to Nottingham West (now Hudson), Rockingham Co, NH. By 1763, Parrott (1743) had moved to Grandby, Hartford Co, CT, where one of Parrott's (1743) sons, Elijah, was born in 1763. Elijah moved to Barnett, Orange Co, NY before moving on to NY and OH. I have no further record of Parrott (1743), but would like to find additional information on him, his spouse and their family. Perhaps Parrott (1743) also moved to Orange Co, VT. Smith married Sarah/Polly (--?--) after 1790. He died on 4 FEB 1850 at age 84. Another record indicates he died on 3 FEB 1851 at age 85. He was buried Bellville Cem, Jefferson Twp, Richland Co, OH. Smith resided in 1790 Wellsburgh Town, Clinton Co, NY according to the 1790 census. He resided in 1800 Essex Co, NY according to the 1800 census. [Essex Co, NY was formed in 1799 from Clinton Co, NY.] He resided before 1810 Willsborough, Essex Co, NY. He resided in 1810 Knox Co, OH. He resided in 1830 Washington Twp, Richland Co, OH. Children of Smith1 Hadley and Sarah/Polly (--?--) were as follows: -Smith B., b. 12 DEC 1792 VT or NY; m. Mary KETTLE; m. Margaret JOHNSON; m. Calista Reynolds (my ancestors). -Isaac, b. 14 JAN 1795 Willsborough, Essex Co, NY; m. Sarah Davidson. -Levi; b. 23 OCT 1798; d. 7 SEP 1850 at age 51; bur. Bellville Cem, Jefferson Twp, Richland Co, OH. -Savannah, b. 29 Nov 1803, d. 14 Jan 1886 IN -Clare; m. (--?--) Bells. -Moses. -Chancy. -Sarah; m. (--?--) Bevins. -Ann; m. (--?--) Smurr. -Polly; m. (--?--) Rogers. -Lucy; m. (--?--) Cunningham. -Julia; m. (--?--) Cassaday. These notes were copied from the work of researcher Albert Hayward. They are responses to requests addressed to the Essex County Historical Society by the 2 following persons: Mrs. Pearl R. Freeman (in 1959) 1668 Thirtieth Ave., Columbus, Nebraska and Mrs. E. Burton Williams (in 1958) 2702 Russell Road Alexandria, VA Smith Hadley appears in 1790 in Willsboro, Clinton Co., NY (now Essex Co.), as having no wife or children. He moved to Ohio in 1810-died 2-4-1850 at about 85. (born about 1765) Samuel Hadley and Jonathan Hadley were minuteman in Cumberland Co., NY militia, Hatcher Co. John Hoisington, Major (ref. NY in the Revolution, pg. 134) 1790 Census Vermont: Samuel Hadley Barnet Town, Orange Co. listed 1 -0-0 and another Samuel Hadley of Newbury, Orange, Co. listed 1-4-2. NY in 1773 (see Documentary History of NY Vol.IV.) 1800 Census Vermont-Jonathan still in Corinth, Orange Co. listed males:2-1-0-0-1; females 2-1-2-0-1; while both Samuels had left the state. 2. LG Greene
    3. Mary.....I hope you are not now being bombarded! I wondered if when you look up HAYDEN in Braintree, if you could do a look up for us on our Greenes? Job Green(e) and his wife Abigail Mann lived in Braintree for some time during the 1850s and 1860s before moving on to Wilbraham Mass. I have access to the History of Braintree and found a few references to him there - but would love to find about their children, Elvira, Mary, William, which might be in the Town Records book. I know Job was involved as a town supervisor at some point, but that is about all I know other than his civil war involvement. Thanks for anything you can do. If you happen to have any ancestors from Cattaraugus County, NY, please let me know - I have a great deal of information on early pioneers of that county and would be happy to try to find info for you. 2. James Baldwin
    3. Hello, My line is Zebulon Baldwin, b. 1726 in Hingham, MA, parents was David and Abigail (Burr) Baldwin. He married Hannah Lyon in 1752 in Woodstock, MA. They had five children and at some point before 1770 or 1780 moved to Vershire, Orange, VT. I have not further recored of either Zebulon or Hannah. Can anyone tell me where I should look for further information, census or cemetery records or church records or the like? Some of their children moved to upstate NY, but I have yet to find any record of them there. Any and all help would be very much appreciated. James. http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/rodin/297/gene.html

    1. Re: [VTORANGE] FORD HAYDEN 1745-Now-MA VT OH WI
    2. Hi! Nice to hear from someone who knows about Braintree, VT. That book you mentioned is what got me and my daughter started on studying our family. Francis Luce in the Stephen/Sophia Luce family tree in that book was my great grandfather. My grandmother was Emeline Cordelia Luce Rhoades - named it turns out after Francis Luce's youngest sister, also in that book. We are VERY curious about the "David Luce" who is mentioned as Stephen's father who apparently didn't stay in Braintree very long. Stephen was supposed to have been born in Braintree in 1809. There is a David Luce in the 1800 census in Barnard who might be the brother of Jonathan Luce who settled there. They came from Massachusetts. There is a David Luce of about the right age who died out in Spencer Co, INDIANA who might be "my" David. I am very curious about the family links before Stephen. I assume in some way there is a link to the widespead Luce family first in Martha's Vineyard. Sophia's parents were Joseph and Olivia Withington...they show up in the Rochester, VT census later on. Do you have more information about there people. My great grandfather Francis first married the widow of his older brother John, then much later married my great grandmother, Lydia Ann Springer in Canaan, VT. There was about a 30 year difference in their ages. It was interesting to find in the 1880 census in Canaan, VT - Francis listed among the millhands (age 40+) and Lydia as a TEENAGER listed with her family. They were married in 1882! No wonder I also like reading women's mysteries!! I would love to know anything more about the Luce family. Many of them were Civil War soldiers from VT I think. Thank you. Marjorie

It not only has birth/death/marriage records but also the records of things that went on in the town as well as legal things too. Mary
