I'm afraid if isn't much. http://www.richfordvt.com/history The town of Richford is located on the Canadian border with a spectacular mountain view in all directions. The town was chartered in 1780 and in 1795 Joseph Stanhope staked claim to a piece of property on the Missisquoi River. That same year, Hugh and Marry Miller and their family became the first settlers. *** This is from The Vermont Historical Gazetteer Vol 2 Part 1 pg 280, by Maria Heminway (published 1871) Richford Joseph Stanhope, Sr and family came from Guilford, Vermont to [Richford] in 1796, and commenced on the flats above and adjoining Hugh Miller. The family consisted of himself, wife, and six children - Sally, Isaac, Joseph, Leverett, Mun, Ezra and Samuel. The last three were born in this town. Joseph [Jr] is still living on the old homestead. He and Samuel are the only ones living. ... Mrs Stanhope died in 1829 and was buried on the farm where they first began. Mr Stanhope lived several years longer and was buried beside his wife. Their graves are now visible, being curiously marked - with white flint stones in their native state, two at the head about as big as a bushel basket, two at the feet the size of a peck, and covered along from head to feet with smaller ones, all white as marble - much better than many others that have lost their identity. *** Buried Troy St Cem. I wonder if some people have concluded that they are Joseph Stanhope and Ruth Tubbs, Ruth supposedly born in Glastonbury Ct in 1761. Joseph is sometimes listed as born in 1757, son of Joseph Sr. of Sudbury and also as son of Isaac; he was supposedly in Guilford VT for a time before moving on to Richford VT. I question many of these details. The Joseph Stanhope in Guilford census in 1790 was single, though the Guilford History doesn't give his age bracket and I don't at the moment have the census itself. Also I can find no appropriate Ruth Tubbs--perhaps she was a widow. I am still looking for the mother of my Abigail Tubbs, b 1757 in Greenfield [MA] where she married Joseph Gaines in 1779 and died in Guilford VT in 1841. (I believe she is erroneously listed as Elizabeth in the vital records; her sister Elizabeth married Joseph's brother David in Greenfield and also moved to Guilford.) Their father was Ezekiel Tubbs, born 1727 in Lyme CT, but I have found no marriage or death record for him. I think his wife may have been named Elizabeth. I have no proof, but I am wondering if the Mrs. Tubb who married Mr. Stanhope in Greenfield in 1780 might possibly have been Ezekiel's widow and the mother of Elizabeth and Abigail. Anyone have any further evidence???? **** Good luck with your search Wanda Alter Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
