The recent history of the Missisquoi band of Abenaki is one of tribal infighting and failed attempts at federal recognition. The reason their attempts have failed is that there are virtually no records available that identify tribal members. Most identified themselves as white in existing documents and only decided to change their heritage when the possibility of Indian casino money peeked over the horizon. Here is a URL http://www.abenakination.org/STATE.pdf that provides some information on the "tribe". Sorry I can't figure out how to provide a link here. I wish I had a nickel for every person that was told (including me)they had an Indian in their ancestry. In the vast majority of cases it just doesn't pan out. The best way to prove it is to research your grandfather's ancestry. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
