Debbie Jennings debj@comsys.net "Following the footprints through time" -----Original Message----- From: johnrclarke_ga [mailto:johnrclarke_ga@email.msn.com] Sent: Saturday, July 22, 2000 10:54 AM To: debj@comsys.net Subject: GROSVENOR Family of Fiarfax, Franklin, VT I am researching the GROSVENOR Family, especially that of Richard GROSVENOR who married Rebekah GLYDE (may be GLOYD) ca. 1790 in Jericho, Chittenden County, VT. Richard GROSVENOR (1765-1838) was the son of Capt. Leicester GROSVENOR, Jr. RS and Esther WELD and grandson of Capt. Leicester GROSVENOR, Sr. and Rebecca WALDO of Pomfret, Windham, CT. According to my best information Richard's family moved to Franklin County, VT shortly after the Revolutionary war from Pomfret, Windham, CT and this family resided in this county until the later years of the 19th Century, Richard had siblings named, Theophilus, Resolved, Esther, Rebecca, Leicester III, Mary and Lucy. Major collateral families in addition to those already mentioned are the BLISS, CRISSEY and THOMPSON Families. Richard and Rebekah GROSVENOR whose known children are: Clarissa (b. 1793 m. Alvin CRISSEY, son of John Crissey, d. 1878 in Chatfield, Fillmore, MN), Nathan (b. 1796. m. Catharine M. <unknown>, d. 1846 in Shelby County, OH), Launson (b. 1799, unm, d. 1848 in Shelby County, OH), Serepta (b. 1800, m. Chester THOMPSON, son of Able, d. 1868 in Stockton, Chautauqua, NY) and Lucy S. (b. 1807, m. Alvin C. BLISS, d. 1839 in Shelby County, OH). The best we can tell is that Richard GROSVENOR and is family immigrated possibly to Canada and then by the late 1820's they are located in NY State. We know they disappear from the Franklin County, VT census after 1800. The next census entry we find for this family is the 1830 Stockton, Chautauqua County, NY and later the 1840 Springcreek, Shelby County, OH census. Where they were for the time between 1800 and 1830 we do not know. Richard GROSVENOR died on 12 Aug 1838 and is buried in Stockton, Chautauqua County, NY. I am especially interested in the family of Catharine M. (Katharine, Catherine or Kate) <unknown> who married Nathan GROSVENOR ca. 1825, probably in NY state. All we know about her is she was born around 1800, some say 9 March 1799, in NY state and she died on 1 Sep 1883 in Latty TWP, Paulding County, OH. She would later say she was a nurse in one census. She outlived her husband and all of her children. She may have been of German or Irish extraction and she stated she was born in NY state but this may or may not have been correct. She may have been born in Canada. She may also have had red hair, a deduction I draw from seeing the picture of one of her daughters. The known names of her and Nathan's children are: Hiram, Cyrus, John Allen, Wellington, Lucy, and Nina. Lucy and John are long time GROSVENOR names but the others are not. I can trace Nathan's family them from NY to OH (ca. 1840) to IL (1859) and back to OH (1870). The last few years of Catharine's life she lived with Rev. John W. EDWARDS and she is buried with the EDWARDS family in Paulding County, OH. Her husband, Nathan (1796-1846) is buried with one brother and sister in Walkup Cemetery, Shelby County, OH. If you have any information on this GROSVENOR family or suspect you know the identity of Catharine's family, I would like to hear from you. Thank you.
