Hello everyone, have been looking at "Vermont 1771 Census" by Jay Mack Holbrook, c 1982. He includes several charts at the start of the book on settlement dates, county origins, number of families, etc. On page vii, there is a chart called "Origins of Vermont Counties - Alphabetical". For Franklin County - here's an excerpt of the information. Maybe this will help someone?? (it's helping "me" try to figure out what belonged "where" / "when" in those pesky late 1700s!) Facts extracted from the book: Franklin Co estab in 1792. Came from Chittenden Co. Chittendon Co estab in 1787. Came from Addison Co. Addison Co estab in 1785. Came from Rutland Co. Rutland Co estab in 1781. Came from Bennington & Charlotte Counties. Bennington Co estab in 1778. Came from Albany & Charolotte Counties, NY. And "this" may help explain the mazes we go through looking for VT ancestors in the late 1700s!! For example, there "was" no Franklin Co at the time of the first federal census. Anyone know where I can find some good late 1700s maps of VT to trace a particular "town" - and what county it was in based on the above changing county lines?? I know for example that Georgia VT used to be considered Chittendon Co and later Franklin Co. I don't know if it changed "before" Chittendon or not... would depend on where the Addison Co lines were, I suppose. (and when the area was originally settled) debbie CAhobbies@aol.com [By the way, there are "settlement dates" 1739-1773 also listed in this book for many VT towns... along with the cooresponding NY county name (1772-1777) and the VT county name (1825 & forward)... "very" interesting reading!] [Georgia, VT is not on the list]
