I don't know if anyone on this list is familiar or is planning a trip to Malone's Webster St. Cem., the oldest? cemetery in town, however this is what I found earlier this week: In 1996, the local D.A.R. chapter erected a 10-ft. high chainlink fence around the whole cemetery and padlocked it shut! (I was told later they had to do this because of vandalism). I went to the Village of Malone offices, and they in turn directed me to the Town of Malone offices, out near the airport. I spoke with a supervisor there who said he had done some work in the cemetery, including drawn up a specific plot map which I was shown. He and his staff were very helpful. Unfortunately the front fence of the cemetery was the closest I was able to get as the supervisor informed me that Malone's First Congregation Church had the key to the padlock; the church secretary told me there is some kind of legal wrangling going on trying to determine who is in charge of the graveyard. And of course as you'd think, she could NOT find the key usually kept in the church! So I could see the stone I was interested in, just could not get to it (after traveling 250 miles). A lesson learned? If never occurred to me that I might have to make an appointment to get into a cemetery! :-)
