Am researching the family of Thomas Carroll and Mary Moss Carroll, who were married in Canada 1837, must have lived in NY in the 1840s and 1850s, then settled in St Albans circa 1860. 1860 census lists children all born NY, Patrick 15, Michael 14, Margaret 12, Mary 10, Thomas 6, Andrew 4, William 3 ms. Patrick and Michael served in the Civil War from St. Albans, Patrick died in the war, his parents applied for his pension. Thomas Carroll spent time in the Brattleboro Asylum, apparently could do little to support his family. Mary Moss Carroll died in St Albans Sept 26, 1891. Thomas died between Oct 4 1898 and March 22 1899. Can't find them in any other VT census after 1860. Daughter Mary married Mitchell Rich 1868 St Albans, they are listed with children in 1870, 1880, 1900 and 1910 census of St Albans. Mary Carroll Rich is listed as a widow in 1920 census, in the family of Bert and Cordelia Plant. Would like to find death date and obit for Thomas Carroll, Mitchell Rich and Mary Carroll Rich. Would love to know if there are still descendants of Mary Carroll Rich in St Albans. Does anyone know if St Albans kept pauper records? Does St Albans have city directories? Have tried to rent St Albans Messenger microfilm reels through interlibrary loan, but no library will lend them. Any info on St Albans would be greatly appreciated. Jim Carroll
Aloha Jim, I just spent 5 days in St. Albans researching my Franco-American ancestors in the 19th C. The Irish Catholic Church there was established in 1847. You might write them at: Immaculate Conception 45 fairfield Street St. Albans, VT 05478 I found that the City Clerk's office had a lot of good knowledge as did the City Library. I believe, because the city is so small, that you could probably reach the City Clerk by addressing a letter to City Clerk, City Hall, Main Street, St. Albans, VT 05478. I don't have the street of the library but you could probably get away with addressing a letter to the St. Albans Free Library, St.Albans, VT 05478. Get back to me if you strike out on these approaches because I may be able to come up with some other ideas.
