    1. Re: Mosco, Quebec Canada -found?
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/pAC.2ACI/1274.1354.1 Message Board Post: I haven't yet but a lady named Bridget wrote me: "I had found a Quebec marriage record which stated that the groom's parents were from Maska. After much searching I found an answer on the Rootsweb Quebec Research mailing list. On Jan. 5, 2003 someone posted the answer to your question, and mine, too. He quoted an article written in 1879, which stated that Mosco was actually St. Hyacinth, which is in Yamaska and was called Maska by the locals and in English became Mosko. Hope this helps you. It did help me find my missing ancestor from Maska." Another wrote me: "a lady said that Masco was in the area of Noyan and is not on the maps today. Noyan is down between the Richelieu River and Lake Missisqoui." One gentleman wrote: "Yamaska and Yamaska East are neighboring Quebec Villages just east of Sroel on the St Lawrence River abt 1/2 way between Montreal & Quebec. There is a river and a mountain with the same name. Maska & Mamaska are Abenaki names for the area. There has beena roman Catholic mission there since 1727." Another wrote: "Recently I saw something that stated Mosco was often used as an Indian word for Missisquoi, i.e.., being on or near the Missisquoi river." Another said: My ancestors had reference to 'Maska' which I later found to mean Yamaska (River) and indicated the area around St. Damase, PQ. I'm still not CERTAIN but St Hyacinthe might be the place to check as Bridget was the only one who stated she'd found her Maska ancestors there. Also this town IS just north of St Damase and the Yamaska River does run through both towns.
