Surnames: Beals, Bushey, Corliss, Donaldson, Lahue, Loiselle, Roberts, Underwood Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/pAC.2ACI/2116.1.1.3 Message Board Post: Hi Ray, THE BUSHEY ROAD By Mrs. Doris Underwood The northernmost point on the three and a half mile Bushey Road, in the township of Swanton, is just north of where it crosses the Wood's Hill Road. Nelson and Florence (Donaldson) Lahue owned and operated a farm here many years ago. Across the corner, Julius Lahue (who left his job as motorman on the electric cars), purchased the small farm formerly owned by the Beals' family. Shortly after World War II, it was acquired by Leslie Roberts who farmed there several years. It is now owned by Leslie Roberts who farmed there several years. It is now owned by Arnold Underwood and carried on as part of his (and formerly his father's) farm. When Melissa and Henry Beals farmed their land from about 1870 to 1920 Melissa augmented the family income by taking in summer boarders who desired a country vacation from the city. The city, five miles away, was St. Albans. Mrs. Beals was well known for her herbal medicines. She gathered her ingredients locally and bottled a brew called Mrs. Beals' Rheumatic Bitters, and sold it throughout the country. She later sold her recipe to a pharmacist, but her granddaughter, Elizabeth Corliss, of St. Albans still has the recipe which reads: Sarsaparilla 1 1/2 ounces Lenna leaves 1 1/2 ounces Gentian root 1 1/2 ounces Colombo 1/2 ounce Anise Seed 1/2 ounce Jodicle Potasse 1 ounce Alcohol 1/2 pint. <excerpt> page 125 ======= Roger and Lise Loiselle's large working farm once was the farm of Gaylord Corliss, and his wife Lois, who was the daughter of Henry and Melissa Beals. They operated it for almost thirty years beginning around 1914. page 126 ======== THE HISTORY OF SWANTON, VERMONT compiled and edited by Rodney R. Ledoux, ©1988, pages 191 and 192.
