    3. My computer crashed and I lost all of my emails. I had stated that I had some books on Georgia Twp. One or two persons had asked for me to look up some information on some names and I did not have it printed out. If you will email me again I now have a new computer and I will oblige. -----Original Message----- From: vtfrankl-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:vtfrankl-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of gc-gateway@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, August 02, 2011 8:37 PM To: VTFRANKL-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [VTFRA] Mead / Barr Family in Highgate Township, Franklin County, VT This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. The ship probably arrived in Montreal, Quebec (big port there). But the document is labeled "Border Crossings: From Canada to U.S." so I believe the Port of Arrival refers to the location where they entered the U.S. That makes sense because if you're coming to the U.S. from Montreal, that is one of the most likely ports of entry and it's less than an hour away. I'm afraid if isn't much. http://www.richfordvt.com/history The town of Richford is located on the Canadian border with a spectacular mountain view in all directions. The town was chartered in 1780 and in 1795 Joseph Stanhope staked claim to a piece of property on the Missisquoi River. That same year, Hugh and Marry Miller and their family became the first settlers. *** This is from The Vermont Historical Gazetteer Vol 2 Part 1 pg 280, by Maria Heminway (published 1871) Richford Joseph Stanhope, Sr and family came from Guilford, Vermont to [Richford] in 1796, and commenced on the flats above and adjoining Hugh Miller. The family consisted of himself, wife, and six children - Sally, Isaac, Joseph, Leverett, Mun, Ezra and Samuel. The last three were born in this town. Joseph [Jr] is still living on the old homestead. He and Samuel are the only ones living. ... Mrs Stanhope died in 1829 and was buried on the farm where they first began. Mr Stanhope lived several years longer and was buried beside his wife. Their graves are now visible, being curiously marked - with white flint stones in their native state, two at the head about as big as a bushel basket, two at the feet the size of a peck, and covered along from head to feet with smaller ones, all white as marble - much better than many others that have lost their identity. *** Buried Troy St Cem. I wonder if some people have concluded that they are Joseph Stanhope and Ruth Tubbs, Ruth supposedly born in Glastonbury Ct in 1761. Joseph is sometimes listed as born in 1757, son of Joseph Sr. of Sudbury and also as son of Isaac; he was supposedly in Guilford VT for a time before moving on to Richford VT. I question many of these details. The Joseph Stanhope in Guilford census in 1790 was single, though the Guilford History doesn't give his age bracket and I don't at the moment have the census itself. Also I can find no appropriate Ruth Tubbs--perhaps she was a widow. I am still looking for the mother of my Abigail Tubbs, b 1757 in Greenfield [MA] where she married Joseph Gaines in 1779 and died in Guilford VT in 1841. (I believe she is erroneously listed as Elizabeth in the vital records; her sister Elizabeth married Joseph's brother David in Greenfield and also moved to Guilford.) Their father was Ezekiel Tubbs, born 1727 in Lyme CT, but I have found no marriage or death record for him. I think his wife may have been named Elizabeth. I have no proof, but I am wondering if the Mrs. Tubb who married Mr. Stanhope in Greenfield in 1780 might possibly have been Ezekiel's widow and the mother of Elizabeth and Abigail. Anyone have any further evidence???? **** Good luck with your search Wanda Alter Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Until relatively recently, most vital records were kept by the towns, in the possession of the town clerks. The odds of *every* town in the county having its records go up in flames is minuscule. However, what may have been meant is that a *particular* town's records burned. In that case, of course it is possible. (In some small towns, the town clerk's home was where the records were kept.) Also, the probate district records for the county might have been lost -- although technically not part of county government, a probate district usually keeps all the records for the county regarding wills, guardianships, etc. because most Vermont counties had, or have, one probate district. It is up to the probate court to decide where in the county to keep things -- there is no reason why it would have to be in, or near, the county courthouse. No reason why it couldn't be, either, as far as I know. Darrell

    3. I found the people in the Bakersfield historical society very helpful. That is not far from Fairfield. I do have a relative buried in Fairfield about that time whose relatives lived in Bakersfield. I also was able to get divorce papers from about that time at the court house I think. I was visiting the area so that makes a difference. However, if you go to: http://search.labs.familysearch.org, you can find information on land sales and purchases. You can also find some wills. After you get to search.labs.familysearch.org a box will display that says "Search More Records" across the top; click on the "Continue to Pilot" in the lower right corner, then you can look for information on your ancestors. I hope this helps you. 3. This is a follow up to my message of 6/21 below. I have been in contact with the town of Fairfield, VT and specifically asked then for wills and land records but am told by the woman who works one day a week that "there are no birth or death records" for my ancestors, which I already knew. I asked about wills, land records etc for John BARTRAM d 1833, Reuben CRAW d 1828- both Fairfield, Franklin, VT. No matter who I write to at Fairfield, VT, the letter gets forwarded to the same woman who seems unable or unwilling to help. Can you suggest a solution? thanks, Patti ----- Original Message ----- From: Patti Waitman-Ingebretsen To: VTFRANKL-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, June 21, 2011 9:46 AM Subject: Franklin County,VT records I am very frustrated with researching Franklin Co, VT- I have tried online searches, library and letters to local genealogical and historical organizations without any success.
