Some of them were Tories that lived in the Easterrn townships of Quebec, but did not want to advertise that their parents were on the wrong side of that war, others were born in Conn but parents moved just after they were born. The town clerk records start about the same time but earlier in land records. Also parts of Swanton were once Highgate. Highgate records go back quite a ways, but some early ones are in shoe boxes. I think Frank grew up in Belvidere the next town over from Bakersfield where Mary grew up. I'm surmising that is teh area in which they met. Frank moved to Pittsburg and married his first wife. Mary Tatro married Orvis Willey a sawyer and they had two children Belle Pearl (my grandmother) and Joseph Orvis Willey. Orvis died early and Mary moved to Pittsburg with the two children and became Frank's "housekeeper." Belle married one of the sons when she was ~16 and had 3 children before she divorced him. TFrank and Mary married in Colebrook, NH and a bit later Mary went blind, I'm assuming glaucoma as it runs in the family. I think she died at a disabled housing place in Vermont. They appear, by 1870, on the US Census of the Town of Champlain in Clinton Co. NY, right across lake Champlain from Vermont. The father, Albert, was a stone mason and lived amongst folks listed as "working on railroad bridge," so I suspect he may have been involved in the stonework of an early train bridge across the lake to NY. I have located the birth records for all of the family members (all born in Quebec) except for the youngest, Narcisse/Nelson Bodah. According to census and marriage and death records, he should have been born in approx. 1868. Nelson is usually listed in census records as born in Vermont, and one of his kids listed him in their marriage record as born in St. Albans, VT. The family name was originally Baudin and sometimes written Beaudin or Bodin, then changed shortly after entering the US to Bodah. I am not really sure where to turn to try to find Narcisse/Nelson's birth record. When did civil registration of births start in Franklin Co. VT? Who now keeps them? Was it earlier in St. Albans? What Catholic churches might have existed then that might have his baptismal record? Any guidance or lookups (with source reference) would be much appreciated. The other family members were: Albert Bodah, b. 1834, St-Philippe-de-Laprairie PQ Domitilde Penanciaux, b. 1828, St-Cyprien-de-Napierville PQ Albert Bodah, b. 1858, St-Georges-de-Henryville PQ Joseph Medard Bodah, b. 1860, ditto David Bodah, b. 1864, St-Romuald-de-Farnahm, PQ Thanks, Dan Bodah Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The recent history of the Missisquoi band of Abenaki is one of tribal infighting and failed attempts at federal recognition. The reason their attempts have failed is that there are virtually no records available that identify tribal members. Most identified themselves as white in existing documents and only decided to change their heritage when the possibility of Indian casino money peeked over the horizon. Here is a URL http://www.abenakination.org/STATE.pdf that provides some information on the "tribe". Sorry I can't figure out how to provide a link here. I wish I had a nickel for every person that was told (including me)they had an Indian in their ancestry. In the vast majority of cases it just doesn't pan out. The best way to prove it is to research your grandfather's ancestry. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
