I have gradually been getting more information about my mother's family who were from the Franklin County, Vermont area. The name has been spelled in several ways. The early generations were RAICHARD or RAICARD. This was later changed to either RICKARD or RECORD. John RAICHARD b. 1781, d. 1856, Franklin (buried in Highgate, VT) m. Caroline BOYCE John's children included Delaney, Rebecca, John, Caroline, Peter, and Lott/Lot Delaney married Seth Warner HATHAWAY and Rebecca married Marshall Nye BEEBE. Both apparently lived in Swanton. Lott or Lot RAICHARD b. 1817, Franklin, d. 1888, Franklin (buried in Highgate, VT) m. Catherine JUDKINS, b. New York, D. 1910, Franklin children were: James E. RAICHARD (who served briefly in the Civil War and died in 1864), Mary, Charles, Hiram RAICHARD/RICARD, Leonard, Rosette, Laura Hiram F. RICHARD/RICARD b. 1855, m.1880 in Franklin to Ruth DAVIS b. Swanton, Vermont Children were: Raymond RICKARD, Harry RECORD, Edith RECORD, Ashley RECORD I have been unable to locate where Hiram lived or where he is buried. He apparently moved away from the Franklin area as his son, Raymond Franklin, was born in Brandon, Vermont. Three of his children: Harry, Edith and Ashley moved to Long Island. Raymond moved to NH. Raymond Franklin RICKARD b. Oct 16 1882 in Brandon, Vermont He married Ethel May CHASE and settled in Newport/Guild, New Hampshire. He was my mother's father. >From Hemenway's Vermont Historical Gazetteer Swanton, Vermont Franklin County pg. 1029 Vol. 4 >From February, 1869, to February, 1873, the writer (George Barney) carried on the tile and hearth business alone, on the east side of the river, while at the same time his son. R. Lester Barney, carried on the grave-stone and monument business on the west side of the river. In February, 1873, the writer with his son-in-law, E.P. Parsons, and his son. R. Lester Barney, formed a partnership under the firm name of Geo. Barney & Sons, and they have prosecuted both branches of business on both sides of the river until 1875, when they dissolved, and the writer continued the business alone until 1879, when his son came in and the business is now, (March, 1882,) conducted under the firm name of Geo. & R.L. Barney. (pg. 1041) During 1816 a second bridge was put up at the Falls by Mr. John Avail, who for many years in his old age lived near Highgate Springs. It was a little below the dam, where the present bridge stands, but remained only about a year. In 1821 another bridge was built in the same place by Samuel Parsons, often afterwards called "Parsons bridge," and being private property was long known as the "toll-bridge," Alfred Forbes, Esq.; was for many years the proprietor and keeper, who sold out to Mr.. Thomas Dimond. In. Jan. 1832, high water carried off the west end, with the toll-house. It was rebuilt the next spring by Mr. C. Barber, employed by Mr. Dimond. Mr. Barber was killed by the falling of some timbers on the work, Mar. 20; age, 30 years. It was at length proved that a toll-bridge was injurious to the business of the place. In order to escape the toll, many avoided the village. The writer circulated the subscription for the purchase of this bridge when about 24 years of age. (pg. 1055) Chas. Parsons,---came to Swanton Falls about 1819, and died there, march 15, 1828, at the age of 34. This Hiram does not seem to be the one referred to in that story as he did not die till 31-Mar-1927, according to information attributed to Rev. In Hemenway's Vermont Historical Gazetteer: pg. 206 Vol. 2 CRIME: On the 3rd of Dec. 1868, a party assembled at the house of Hiram Boomhour for a dance, and being old folks, they stayed all night, and some of them nearly all the next day to play cards, and of course such business could not be done to advantage without rum; and as the company was an amalgamation of Dutch, Irish and "Yankee." a spirit that was not ardent sprung up among them--even a spirit of jealousy--and in the afternoon of the 4th, which was Friday, a drunken row was indulged in, which resulted fatally to the man of the house, who instead of being knocked down and dragged out, was knocked down and stamped out, and so effetely was it done that he died in less than 36 hours. A post-mortem examination disclosed the fact that he died of congestion of the brain, which might have been caused by the tramping to which he had been subjected, or it might have been induced by some other cause. At any rate somebody had been killed, and somebody had killed him, and thereby the peace and dignity of the State had been disturbed, and the case must be investigated and the majesty of the law vindicated. So three men were arrested, viz. Thomas Ryan as principal. and Patrick Ryan and Truman Ellis as accessories. At the examination before R. T. Bingham Esq.; conducted by Ira S. Blaisdell and M.A. Bingham of Cambridge for the State, and George Ballard of Fairfax for the respondents, so much proof of guilt was shown that they were all held for trial at the county court, in the sum of $100.00 each. Can anyone help me identify this person? I was looking at the cemetery listings for Brooks cemetery in St. Albans, VT (actually looking for someone else) and noticed: "Herbie / son of / C & S. A. Boomhour Died / June 5 1874 AE 2 yrs. 8 mos." My present assumption is that this refers to Herbert W. Boomhower, son of Clark Rogers Boomhower and Sarah Orcutt. However, while the date of birth fits with what I knew about Herbert W., I had a date of death that was 5 years later in 1879. Also of concern is when this family moved from Stanbridge PQ to VT. Does anyone know of another "C & S. A. Boomhour" in the vicinity that offers an alternative interpretation?

Hi, Not sure if this will help. In Hemenway's Vermont Historical Gazetteer: Pittsfield, Vermont Rutland county: pg. 936 Vol. 3 A Congregational Church was formed Sept. 17, 1803, by the Rev. Martin Fuller of Royalton, consisting of 16 members, viz. Nath'l Stone, Nathan Stone, Levi Partridge, Asa Gilbert, Isaac Eddy, Betsey Eddy, John Gaius, Ruth Gaius, Dan'l Bow, RHODA STONE, Molly Blossom, Hannah Gilbert, Molly Bow, Elizabeth Durkee, Rebecca Stone and Lydia Hayden, being inhabitants of Stockbridge and Pittsfield, chose Nathan'l Stone for their moderator, and Isaac Eddy, scribe: which church was supplied with preaching by various ministers from abroad; some by voluntary service, others being hired for longer or shorter periods, as they could provide means-among whom were, Archibald Cambell, Elder Rich, a very corpulent man, who would walk with his staff from Pittsford, a distance of 12 miles across the Green Mountain, through the woods, when the road was barely cut out, and not much worked. The church was composed of members both in Stockbridge and Pittsfield, and was for many years called "the church of Stockbridge and Pittsfield." (Vol. 3 pg. 880 Pawlet, Vermont Local Government: by the laws of 1779, after the State government had gone into operation, a large share of criminal offenses were punishable by whipping on the naked back, from ten to one hundred lasses, according to the nature and aggravation of the offense. For several crimes they were required to wear in some conspicuous place on their garments the initial letter of the crime they had committed in addition to the whipping. These laws inflicting corporal punishment were continued and modified from time to time until about 1816. We ourselves remember an instance of its infliction on a young lad who was convicted of theft, by SIMON STONE, second constable. The following is a long message in three parts but it contains a lot of data about Boomhowers and Schoolcrafts that I hope some of you will find helpful and provide some interest over the coming season. I'm personally interested in Aura Schoolcraft (m. Jacob Boomhower), her siblings and her ancestry. Thanks to others on these lists the Boomhower side is in much better shape than the Schoolcraft. Help with the Schoolcrafts would be appreciated. I'm also trying to trace an Enos Sisco who married Aura's daughter, Lavina A. Boomhower. Other than a marriage record, a couple of VT census listings, and a marriage records of his three sons, I have very little on Enos. I suspect he came from around Richford VT or Frelighsburgh PQ. Any help would be appreciated. -----Cautions and Disclaimers----- The originals from which I copied the following were mostly handwritten and hard to read. They were also copies that someone else had made of orignal records kept in the respective towns. Some towns even sent in conflicting records for the same person. (There are at least two below that are like that.) Lastly, my typing is reasonably accurate but I'm prone to the usual cases of transposed characters and hitting the adjacent key. If something below looks 'funny' you may prefer to suspect my typing or my misreading a '0' for a poorly written '6' or something similar. I've not attempted too much 'interpretation' of what appeared to be written. i.e. I tried to copy precisely the spellings of names, although after you've type "Boomhower" several dozen times its hard not to be repetetive, even if they really wrote "Boomhour" this time.
