    1. [VTFRANKL] Grosvenors of Fairfax
    2. johnrclarke_ga
    3. Good Afternoon, I am looking for any information on the Richard GROSVENOR family of Fairfax, Franklin County, VT. We feel reasonably sure they had relocated to Stockton, Chautauqua County, NY ca.1830. This families name has been misspelled more often than one can shake a stick but common spellings include GROVNER, GROSVENER, GROVINIR and a quite a few other misspellings that we know of. Richard GROSVENOR was a son of Theophilus GROSVENOR and the grandson of Leicester GROSVENOR, JR. Theophilus GROSVENOR died in 1808 and is buried in Fairfax, Franklin County, VT. Richard GROSVENOR married a Rebecca GLOYD about 1790, possibly in VT. Names included in this GROSVENOR list include a Nathan GROSVENOR (b.1796 in VT), Alanson or Launson GROSVENOR, (a possible twin of Serepta, b.1800 in VT) Serepta GROSVENOR (a possible twin of Alanson, b. 1800 in VT), Clarissa GROSVENOR (b.1793 in VT), Richard GROSVENOR (the father, b. 1765, CT) and Rebecca Gloyd GROSVENOR (the mother, b. about 1770, possibly in CT). The whereabouts of this family from ca. 1810 to ca. 1830 are a mystery. The last time they are picked up on a US Census is the 1800 Fairfax, Franklin County, VT census. Also during this period (1810-1830) Nathan GROSVENOR married a Catharine "M" (b. 1799, possibly in NY) of which we know nothing about but she would later describe her profession as being a nurse so her father may have been a MD. According to some sources the father, Richard Grosvenor, is buried in Stockton, Chautauqua County, NY but we cannot find any record of his burial so he may have been buried in Canada or some where else. We do know that Nathan died in 1846 in McLean TWP, Shelby County, OH and is buried there. We also know that Catharine, Nathan's wife, died in 1883 and is buried in Latty TWP, Paulding County, OH. We also know that Nathan was raised Methodist in VT but by the time he, Catharine and their children got to Shelby County, OH they were Dutch Reformed. We have no idea concerning the reasons for this new religious affiliation. Nathan and Catharine's children include Hiram GROSVENOR (b. 1829), Cyrus GROSVENOR (b. 1830) and Lucy GROSVENOR (b. 1832). There were several other children but have no idea where the were born. All would later state they were born in NY state but no record of their birth has been found. If you can provide any information on this family, I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance John R. 3. Hi, y'all... Thought you might enjoy seeing these stats. 100 Years Ago... The average life expectancy in the United States was 47. Only 14 percent of the homes in the United States had a bathtub. Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone. A three minute call from Denver to New York City cost $11. There were only 8,000 cars in the US and only 144 miles of paved roads. The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph. Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more heavily populated than California. With a mere 1.4 million residents, California was only the twenty-first most populous state in the Union. The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower. The average wage in the U.S. was 22 cents an hour. The average U.S. worker made between $200 and $400 per year. A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist $2500 per year, a veterinarian between $1500 and $4000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5000 per year. More than 95 percent of all births in the United States took place at home. Ninety percent of all U.S. physicians had no college education. Instead, they attended medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press and by the government as "substandard." Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee cost fifteen cents a pound. Most women only washed their hair once a month and used borax or egg yolks for shampoo. Canada passed a law prohibiting poor people from entering the country for any reason, either as travelers or immigrants. The five leading causes of death in the U.S. were: 1. Pneumonia and Influenza, 2. Tuberculosis, 3. Diarrhea, 4. Heart disease, 5. Stroke. The American flag had 45 stars. Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii and Alaska hadn't been admitted to the Union yet. Drive-by-shootings -- in which teenage boys galloped down the street on horses and started randomly shooting at houses, carriages, or anything else that caught their fancy were an ongoing problem in Denver and other cities in the West. The population of Las Vegas, Nevada was thirty. The remote desert community was inhabited by only a handful of ranchers and their families. Plutonium, insulin, and antibiotics hadn't been discovered yet. Scotch tape, crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented. There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day. One in 10 U.S. adults couldn't read or write. Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school. Coca-Cola contained cocaine instead of caffeine. Punch card data processing had recently been developed, and early predecessors of the modern computer were used for the first time by the government to help compile the 1900 census. Eighteen percent of households in the United States had at least one full-time servant or domestic. There were about 230 reported murders in the U.S. annually. 1. [VTFRANKL] Virus Update and Tip
    2. Debbie Carter
    3. Everyone This virus seems to be taking the form of several different names, so any attachments should be suspect. Alot of persons have asked me why they should worry if Rootsweb filters out the attachments to the mailing lists. Because you might receive one privately and still be infected and I have seen cases where the attachments have slipped through on the mailing lists. It might be a good time to take a precautionary message and store whatever on your system you can on floppys or zips or whatever. JUST IN CASE. I am referring to family files and other irreplaceable items.I know we all have way to much time involved to loose anything!! You may be able to restore the system eventually but what would be lost, would be lost permanently. Debra Carter ListOwner tara37@comsys.net

    1. [VTFRANKL] IMPORTANT PLEASE READ!!!!!
    2. Debbie Carter
    3. To All Listmembers: While I don't normally make a habit to announce or pass along virus info, this one does seem to be quite scary and real. The US defense system along with other businesses are considering shutting down email servers to avoid spreading it. I am passing along the following link to a page with the information from Alta Vista news reports on it. If you choose not to read it, this is fine but I am making sure everyone is aware of it. http://live.altavista.com/scripts/editorial.dll?efi=932&ern=y&ei=1762998 Being on the mailing lists it only takes one person to infect everyone.Sort of like a classroom with the chicken pox!! Also, it is only fair to warn everyone that if a message comes through to me and there is a virus attached, that person will be unsubscribed (in the interest of everyone else) and be notified by me. Something came through another listowner a short time ago saying that in order to bypass your recycle bin, if you do receive this attachment "hold down the SHIFT + DEL buttons and this will take it off the computer. I don't want alot of time taken on the list with everyone "warning" everyone else. This is the warning.I hope you take the time to read the link I am sending. This virus is called the "I Love You" virus and takes MANY different forms so please, please be sure of the contents of your attachments with each other. (I myself am guilty of being over anxious for "new data" so I can understand) but please think twice before opening anything. Debra Carter ListOwner tara37@comsys.net
