    1. Re: [VTFRANKL] Mitchell and Mary Carroll Rich, St.Albans
    2. Carolyn, Hi. Do you happen to know the maiden name of the Hattie, age 38, who is married to John Rich, age 40, found on the same page of the 1900 St. Albans census as your Mitchell and Mary Rich? The reason I ask is that I have a Harriet Constantine b. May 1863 (d/o Suppliant Constantine and Harriet Patenaude) who was married to a Rich sometime after 1880. She was listed as Hattie in the 1880 St. Albans census and a Civil War Pension file has her as Harriet Rich in 1899. I was wondering if this could be the same Hattie. There is also a Della Rich who signed one of the papers as a witness to Harriet Constantine's mark. I actually follow Etiene a son of Suppliant Constantine and Harriet Patenaude, and would like to find out happened to his brothers and sisters (Marie Rachel, Rose Delima, Cyprien, Norbert, Malvina, Marie Cyeranne, Mary and Harriet) Any information will be appreciated. Thanks, Mary Alvarado

Especially glad to hear you were born MA, that's where I am (also born) but St. Albans for me might as well be Hawaii. If all else fails, will save for a trip next summer. The church info is very intriguing, but don't want to end up bothering them repeatedly, would like to send one letter of request, so am trying to narrow down probable dates of death, etc. Most helpful would be if I could rent microfilm reels of St. Albans Messenger, but no library who has it will lend it. I asked how much it costs to buy each microfilm reel, stunned to hear it's $25!!! Also am not sure if it's a good paper for obits and local news. Can anyone on this mailing list vouch for the St. Albans Messenger? Thanks again Jerry Jim Carroll --part2_df.ac077d9.2713768f_boundary-- --part1_df.ac077d9.27137974_boundary--

    3. Hi. I have been researching my Rich family here in St. Albans for a couple years now. I have Mitchell Rich born 1/1847 married to Mary born 8/1849. Children: Charles-born 1871, George-born 1872, Nellie b-8/1878, Fred-b-1881, Lillie-b-7/188? (illegible), Homer-b-7/1889, Willie-b-12/14/1869. Mitchell was born in Vermont, Mary born in N.Y. Mary's parents were born in Ireland. Mitchell was a mason. I got most of my information from the City Hall in St. Albans. Also some from census records at the library. So far I have not connected Mitchell and Mary to any of my family. My g-father was Edmund Rich, father Oliver. Hope this helps. 3. Aloha Carolyn, If Mary's parents were born in Ireland there is an excellent possibility that the family is Catholic. I suggest that, if you haven't done it already, you contact the "Irish" Catholic Church in St. Albans, which was established in 1847. Their address is Immaculate Conception Church, 45 Fairchild St., St. Albans, VT 05478. The week before last I spent a delightful week in St. Albans researching my French-Canadian genes and found all of the Catholic Church secretaries and city/town clerks that I met in Franklin County to be friendly and helpful. Get back to me for some other approaches if the contact with Immaculate Conception Church produces nothing. 3. Aloha Jim, I just spent 5 days in St. Albans researching my Franco-American ancestors in the 19th C. The Irish Catholic Church there was established in 1847. You might write them at: Immaculate Conception 45 fairfield Street St. Albans, VT 05478 I found that the City Clerk's office had a lot of good knowledge as did the City Library. I believe, because the city is so small, that you could probably reach the City Clerk by addressing a letter to City Clerk, City Hall, Main Street, St. Albans, VT 05478. I don't have the street of the library but you could probably get away with addressing a letter to the St. Albans Free Library, St.Albans, VT 05478. Get back to me if you strike out on these approaches because I may be able to come up with some other ideas. 1. Re: [VTFRANKL] Catholic records before St. Luke's
    2. J. Lesperance
    3. Aloha Michael, I came back yesterday from a week in Franklin County where my main goal was to assemble information on where to locate sacramental records...baptisms, weddings and burials...for those of French-Canadian ancestry who settled in communities in northwest VT before Catholic Churches were established in or near those communities. It makes a little difference whether you are searching for sacramental records of Irish or Franco-Catholics because the Franco's were sometimes served by missionaries from French-speaking Quebec parishes and some went back to Quebec for the sacraments especially baptisms. There was an Irish priest stationed in Burlington in the first half of the 19th C who did considerable missionary work in VT. The first Catholic Church in VT was St. Mary's (now the cathedral, the Immaculate Conception) established in 1830 at Burlington. You might write them: Immaculate Conception, 20 Pine St, Burlington, VT 05401. Failing that, try the diocesan archivist: David Blow, Chancery Office, 52 Williams St, Burlington, VT 05401. St. Mary's Church (an Irish church which like the Burlington church is now called Immaculate Conception was established in St. Albans in 1847. Address: 45 Fairchild St., St. Albans, VT 05478. Separately four individuals with considerable early Northern VT French-Canadian genealogical experience told me that at least 1/3 and maybe as high as 1/2 of the Franco-Catholics had their marriages performed by a Protestant clergyman or Justice of the Peace if they couldn't get to a Catholic priest. I'm not sure if those numbers apply to the Irish Also you can e-mail me with a specific request because I have an alphabetical surname listing of about 2,000 sacraments performed in Quebec parishes near the border that involved U.S. residents. Not all were Franco-Americans. (Isn't it interesting that a Franco-Hawaiian can do this sort of thing but ALL of my ancestors migrated from Quebec to the U.S on either side of Lake Champlain in the 19th C). (I had asked about the name FOLLETT which must have been somewhat common in Franklin Co. in the first half of the 19th century. Guess they all moved westward.) It's interesting that the name HOLLETT, along with FOLLETT, is often found in Newfoundland. I wonder if all of three of these had their roots in Devon, Dorset, and the Channel Islands of England. 1. [VTFRANKL] Malone - Webster St. Cem.
    2. I don't know if anyone on this list is familiar or is planning a trip to Malone's Webster St. Cem., the oldest? cemetery in town, however this is what I found earlier this week: In 1996, the local D.A.R. chapter erected a 10-ft. high chainlink fence around the whole cemetery and padlocked it shut! (I was told later they had to do this because of vandalism). I went to the Village of Malone offices, and they in turn directed me to the Town of Malone offices, out near the airport. I spoke with a supervisor there who said he had done some work in the cemetery, including drawn up a specific plot map which I was shown. He and his staff were very helpful. Unfortunately the front fence of the cemetery was the closest I was able to get as the supervisor informed me that Malone's First Congregation Church had the key to the padlock; the church secretary told me there is some kind of legal wrangling going on trying to determine who is in charge of the graveyard. And of course as you'd think, she could NOT find the key usually kept in the church! So I could see the stone I was interested in, just could not get to it (after traveling 250 miles). A lesson learned? If never occurred to me that I might have to make an appointment to get into a cemetery! :-)

Patrick and Michael served in the Civil War from St. Albans, Patrick died in the war, his parents applied for his pension. Thomas Carroll spent time in the Brattleboro Asylum, apparently could do little to support his family. Mary Moss Carroll died in St Albans Sept 26, 1891. Thomas died between Oct 4 1898 and March 22 1899. Can't find them in any other VT census after 1860. Daughter Mary married Mitchell Rich 1868 St Albans, they are listed with children in 1870, 1880, 1900 and 1910 census of St Albans. Mary Carroll Rich is listed as a widow in 1920 census, in the family of Bert and Cordelia Plant. Would like to find death date and obit for Thomas Carroll, Mitchell Rich and Mary Carroll Rich.
