    3. Aloha SL, Any idea where and when Mary & William were married. Looks like it was before 1866. Consider that they may have been Franco-Americans, thus Catholics. SEAL=SEALE and INGLIS=INGLAS. Have you contacted the two Catholic Churches in St. Albans for their marriage or baptisms of their kids? The Catholic Churches there were established in 1847 and 1872. I have their addresses. 3. Aloha Sharon, LAMBERT is a French-Canadian name. Practically all of French-Canadian ancestry in that era were Catholics. Let us know if you have any information on the date/place of her marriage to Jacob. Do you have the baptisms of their children because often the Godparents were the infant's grandparents? I have the early 19th C baptisms of four LAMBERT infants born in VT in the 1840's but baptized on the Quebec side of the border. None have the surname Julia. Get back to me if you get a hint as to the names of Julia's parents and I'll see if they match any of the infants' parents' names that I have. 3. Researching John GODDARD and Lucy (STILES) GODDARD, also ?John SHAW? John GODDARD (b. December 13 or 15, 1764) married Lucy STILES (b. December 21, 1762 in Hollis NH) on March 21, 1785 in Hollis, NH. He is said to have died July 26, 1812 in Milton, VT. Their son Caleb GODDARD is listed in the 1850 Georgia, VT census as having a 90 year old woman named Lucy SHAW living in his household. Caleb subsequently moved to Lena, IL. I received the following from the Lena cemetery: Goddard, Lucy Gl: No lot number b: d: October 29, 1853 Age: 93 yrs. 10 mos. 8 das. Sp: John Shara (?) Goddard A kind person sent me a photograph of the tombstone of Lucy GODDARD. If I squint right this is what the stone seems to read (very hard to read). Goddard Lucy wife of John Shaw died Oct. 29. 1853 Lucy SHAW (aged 90 in 1850) would be the same age as Lucy GODDARD (93 IN 1853), but not as Lucy (STILES) GODDARD who would only have been 87 in 1850. Are these 3 Lucy all the same person? Is there any evidence that Lucy (STILES) GODDARD married a John SHAW after John GODDARD's death? Any thoughts? Also I would appreciate confirmation of John GODDARD's death date. Thank you very much. Afa

    2. J. Lesperance
    3. Aloha James, Suggest that you focus on finding either the church or the civil record of the marriage of Mary L. HOGAN and Herbert Willie TOWNE who you say were married 4 Mar 1884 at St. Albans or Shelby. (Pardon my ignorance but where is Shelby?) Either record should tell you the names of the parents. HOGAN sounds Irish and Irish generally suggests Catholic. Write to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 45 Fairfield St., St. Albans, VT 05478 which was established in 1847 as St. Mary's Church to serve a predominantly Irish congregation. You might also try Holy Angels Catholic Church, 246 Lake S, St. Albans established in 1872 to serve a predominantly Franco-American congregation. If you haven't already searched the VT Vital Records and contacted the city clerk at St. Albans for that marriage, you should do so. When I write to churches, I include a SASE and a small donation which always gets me an answer. You might also look for the baptisms of the children of Herbert and Mary because often the grandparents were Godparents of their grand children. Don't give up. I've had genealogical research problems in Franklin County in the 19th C that had less data than you have, and was able to make considerable progress. 1. [VTFRANKL] Lester LAHUE
    2. James Lahue/Austin/IBM
    3. Lester was my great-grandfather. The problem I have is determining who his parents are. According to his death record, he was born on June 14, 1847. He is not seen in the 1850 VT census but he is seen in the 1860 VT census: he is 13 years old and lives in the Peter "Layhu" household (in Berkshire). Peter Lahue is also seen in the 1850 VT census (living in Richford). According to Lester's marriage certificate (he married Laura Laplant on January 14, 1874), his parents were Peter and Amanda Lahue (whose birth names were Pierre Lague and Monique Rainville). The problem with this is that my grandfather (Walter Lahue) stated on Lester's death record that Lester's parents were "R. Lahue and Mary Laplante" (Lester died in Highgate Center on March 31, 1932). Since my grandfather has been dead for about 30 years now, I have no way of knowing whether that information was true or not. The death record and his marriage record state that Lester was born in Richford. However, Richford and the Vermont Vital Records have no birth record for Lester. There are also no birth records for any Lahue in Richford in the same time frame as Lester. Since Lester does not appear in the 1850 census in Peter's household (nor in any of the census data for the northern half of Vermont), the idea that Peter was not his birth father has a potential to be true. What I'm looking for is some clue to say who Lester's parents really were. Thanks for any info. Jim Lahue

    3. Aloha Jim, For what it is worth: Celestin LAGUE, child of Pierre & Monique RENVILLE of Richford (VT) was born 20 Feb and baptized 2 Jul 1848 at Notre Dame des Anges, Stanbridge, Quebec Godparents were Joseph BOURQUE & Emilie COLLETTE: and Julien LAGUE, child of Pierre & Monique RINVILLE of Ritchford (sic) US, was born 23 Feb and baptized 10 May 1846 at the same ND des Anges. Godparents: Charles TETREAU & Marcelline LAGUE. In my opinion RINVILLE, RENVILLE and RAINVILEE are all one and the same. This information would clearly place Monique as the wife of Pierre in 1846 and 1848. You said that Lester was born 14 June 1847. Our French-American ancestors were often quite fertile, so this leads me to believe that Pierre & Monique are the parents of Lester. My guess is that your grandfather was wrong when he filled out the Lester's death certfiicate. Another possibility , is that Monique and Pierre remarried to Mary/Laura LAPLANTE/LAPLANT. Don't sweat variations in given names, especially if one of the first names was Mary. Many French-Canadian and Franco-American girls of that era were baptized with two names, the first being Marie. LAHUE is a variation of LAGUE, so don't sweat that either. One of the Quebec pioneers was a LAGUE. So you should be looking for LAGUE when you've crossed that formidable genealogical barrier...the VT-Quebec border in the 19th C. (My only two ancestral brickwalls are at that barrier.) 3. Aloha Betty, I've had experience researching French-Canadian ancestors in and around St. Albans. MICHAEL might well be an Anglicization of the French surname MICHEL. If he's from Canada it may be Quebec. If he is French-Canadian he was probably a Catholic. Try to find their marriage because it may well give you the name of the parents. Try the VT vital records first. Then the St. Albans City Clerk. Then the Catholic churches including St Mary's (now Immaculate Conception) in Burlington. Good luck.
